NCL fails again! by mgbark

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Overall, we are glad we went, but NCL really cheated us on this one, failing to deliver the promised itinerary at 3 out of 5 ports. No discount, no apology. If you like cruising, try NCL, but if you're going for the ports, you might want to try a more dependable cruise line.

Fall Color Cruising in Canada by rigould

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

The itinerary was very nice, especially the overnight in Quebec City. The ship provided a great way to see some Canadian ports. More information could have been provided about each port of call. A more varied selection of things to do onboard should be given. The staff and crew were friendly and professional.

Disappointed With Some Stops, Happy with the Gem by ceholster

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

We took off from NYC for a ten-day cruise that included Halifax Ca., Quebec Ca., Cornerbrook Ca., and Sydney Ca. We were told that we would have two days in Quebec, but it turned into 24 hours because, we were told, the Whale migration in the Saint Lawrence had the ship slow down the length of this seaway both ways. No whales were sighted and we lost half a day of time in Quebec City. The port was a joke! It was next to a dump and grain silos. The gangway was build with two ramps by a portable crane on shipping containers and was extremely hazardous to traverse. We were a distance from the city, while another ship (Princess Line) was right across from the main area with an open berth behind it. We had to traverse unsafe terrain and cross a river lock to get to the city! The ship offered transportation for a fee of $30.00. I have been on 32 cruises and when a ship is this far out of town the shuttle was free! We left early the next day at 5:00 PM instead of 10PM from the original itinerary. We arrived at Cornerbrook, which was a waste of time. There was nothing to see unless you took an expensive excursion inland. The town had a City Hall, VFW and a library. Not even picturesque. When we left this stop the Captain told us we would not be going to Sydney due to a storm coming up the east coast. We headed out to sea to avoid it. For over a day we were in 21-foot swells and had a rough trip home. We arrived in NYC on time to a calm bay. We expected the stops to be memorable and safe. The berthing in Quebec was unacceptable, and the choice of Cornerbrook was very poor. We were disappointed and feel that Norwegian took advantage of an older group of passengers.

Eastern Canada & Quebec by bbishop92698233

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

It was a very pleasant cruise with some good ports of call. I prefer Europe and Asia, but if you like scenery this would be a good cruise for you. Quebec is quite stunning.

Underwhelmed by underwhelmed

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

I'm a first time cruiser and I learned so many things on this trip. More so on what NOT to do. I need to be on a larger ship, more activities especially on the sea days. I would do more advance research on the ports to maximize time. I would evaluate booking the excursions through the cruise line as I feel they gouge you. So disappointed they would charge $79 for a tour of the ship. I would have been willing to pay $15 as I was so desperate to have an activity option. My next cruise will not be on Norwegian.

Amazing Fall Foliage 2017 by Cruiser24871206

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

This was a once in a lifetime cruise for my family. We could not have been happier with the ship or Norwegian. The excursions filled up fast so we were glad we booked in advance. The foliage was beyond amazing and there was so much history and culture to enjoy. Highly recommend this cruise.

Not a Gem to Sail by twiles

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

I would not recommend this cruise to anyone due to all I have stated above. They need to get their act together on this one. It is very close to the worst cruise I have taken.

Great Canadian / New England Cruise. by ron2544

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

This was our first cruise in a long time. It took some time and consideration to chose the correct cabin, restaurants and excursions but it was well worth it. Norwegian cruise lines and the crew of the Gem made it a memorable experience.

Not so GEM by axajimenez1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

Not a good value, didn't like Norwegian. We had a late departure, I paid for a mid ship cabin and was given a forward cabin. When I claimed this to the front desk the person was very polite and showed me another cabin, but my husband didn't want to go through the hassle of moving luggage. I was never offered a credit or another satisfaction.

A very scary experience by evelynT44215783

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

My husband and I just returned this week from NCL GEM out of New York City to New England, Sept.16 to Sept 23/2017. This cruise was at the end a real nightmare, a CRUISE FROM HELL. NCL decided to put the lives of thousand of people at risk by departing the last port of Boston and get into Tropical Storm Jose. We all spent 24 hours inside the ship, all doors locked by the cruise personnel, with winds of more than 50 miles per hour outside. I have been in many many cruises and I know bad weather, this was not bad weather, THIS WAS A STORM. Very scary, at moments I thought that it was the end of our lives, waiting for the ship to tilt or not been able to overcome this storm. We didn't sleep for 24 hours, many people slept at the common areas afraid to go to their cabins, not to mention many were sea sick (vomit), including my husband who spent the night at the bathroom totally sick. The horn of the ship constantly sounding because the visibility was ZERO not to mention the huge waves due to the extreme high wind. I was not able to look outside the ship because it was a scene from a terror movie. We had an inside cabin and there I was able to hear the wind outside the ship, UNBELIEVABLE!!! We were exactly at the place where it is always advised not to be when there is a storm, on the ocean. Many cruise employees that have more than 7 or 8 years experience mentioned that they have NEVER experienced something like this and they were very scared. I spoke with a man that spent 30 years in the Navy and he said that never he have seen such an irresponsible decision from a navigation personnel. This was the third cruise we have taken with NCL and I am sure that it was the last. This was not a service problem, this is a life and death problem....a very serious problem. Due to this lack of judgement by either the Captain of this ship GEM or Norwegian Cruise Line, I WILL NEVER TRAVEL ON NCL AGAIN.

Stop with the selling! by pjgellin

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Canada, New England, New York

This was my first cruise and I found it a bit expensive. There were a lot of hidden costs. Too much selling. I enjoyed the entertainment the most. I had a cabin to myself which was lovely. I was with friends but did a lot on my own. There was plenty to do. If I do another one I will choose a smaller boat without all the selling, if I can. I did not like the fact I had to pay for bottled water. It was a learning experience.

It was my first cruise. My daughter and I had a great time, excerpt for the fact that she got swimmers ear the 3 rd day and that messed up our plans a little bit. Other than that , it was a very nice experience .

Great Carribean Cruise by fimihan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Nice cruise. Will probably sail with Norwegian again. My advice to future cruisers is that they should pack many items in their wardrobe for photo ops. Also , try to disembark at every port of call even if you are not taking tours. Take advantage of all photo ops!

Amazing Adventure by rauletmcgann

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Gem / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

This was my husband and my first cruise. It took us a day or two to get the hang of how things worked, but now we are hooked. I spent a little more money than I thought I would on extras like photos, excursions and the internet package, however I would have enjoyed the cruise just as much without these additions. The ship has a lot of activities that are suitable for every age group and dynamic. When it is time to leave, you feel as if you are leaving family. I can't wait to book my next cruise! Next time, we will bring our kids.

It was a nice cruise. I was expecting a bigger pool , especially the ship was packed. Also, more variety of family activities especially on rainy days.
