Review summary

It was a very pleasant cruise with some good ports of call. I prefer Europe and Asia, but if you like scenery this would be a good cruise for you. Quebec is quite stunning.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
It took between 15 & 30 minutes.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food was consistently good. Since this was my 7th cruise in the last 3 years, I'm getting harder to impress.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The Gem had your normal cruise activities.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The entertainment in the theater was Broadway type shows, a comedy troupe, a stand up comedian, a solo singer and an acrobatic duo. Overall, the entertainment was good.

Children's Programs

no kids

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Everyone was friendly. The servers really didn't come around and ask if you wanted drinks or refills so you might find that to be a perk or frustrating.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
I think the NCL ships tend to look better than most. It was in good shape and very colorful.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
It was a normal size room for an inside cabin with a large shower compared to most cruise ships.

Ship tip

This ship was serving crêpe to order every night in the buffet area.

Ports of call

New York, New York

4 out of 5
I didn't get to roam around, but the New York skyline provided for a nice sail away.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

4 out of 5
Peggy's Cove was a beautiful area, and it was interesting to hear more about the Titanic disaster.

Quebec City, Quebec

5 out of 5
It is an architecturally stunning city, and it you like visiting historic churches you don't want to miss the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré near Quebec.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland

3 out of 5
The people of the city tried very hard to make the port feel welcoming. I would suggest taking an excursion here as there ins't much to see around the city. It really isn't historic. You want to get out of town so that you can potentially see moose, caribou or whales.

Sydney, Nova Scotia Did not visit port

The port was skipped due to a tropical storm.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We ended up getting cleared to disembark an hour early. I did the self assisted disembarkation within the first 15 minutes of being cleared and was through customs in less than 15 minutes.
