Norwegian Gem Overview

By Cruiseline.com - Updated Aug. 27, 2019

Norwegian’s motto of “Freestyle Cruising” is at the heart of the wide range of activities and entertainment on Norwegian Gem. Sports enthusiasts can participate in an aerobics class at the Body Wave Fitness Center or join a pick-up game on the ship’s basketball court, while passengers ready for some pampering can get a massage or facial at the full-service Mandara Spa & Salon. Norwegian Gem’s world-class productions will impress music lovers and theatergoers alike with a stacked lineup including Pure Variety, the ship’s variety showcase, as well as the rocking Get Down Tonight and Blazing Boots, a pop-country showcase that’s sure to get passengers dancing.

With over a dozen bars and lounges, the nightlife on Norwegian Gem won’t disappoint. For a vintage, art deco-inspired vibe, Shakers Martini & Cocktail Bar is the place to be, and cigar aficionados can sit back and enjoy a cognac and a rolled premium cigar at Corona Cigar Club. Passengers looking to dance should check out the Spinnaker Lounge, where the stage converts to a dance floor every night.

Refurbished in 2015 as part of the multimillion-dollar Norwegian Edge program, this Jewel-class ship now boasts O'Sheehan's Bar & Grill (a Norwegian fan-favorite), which is open 24 hours a day, as well as redecorated Horizon and Observation lounges, and new furnishings and decor throughout the vessel.

Norwegian Gem sets sail from Boston, New York, and Quebec City, with voyages ranging from 4-day cruises to Bermuda to a 21-day cruise through the Panama Canal. Other Norwegian Gem destinations include New England and Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and the Mexican Riviera.

Why Sail on Norwegian Gem: With first-rate stage productions, an onboard casino, and over a dozen bars and clubs, Norwegian Gem is ideal for adults looking for freedom, flexibility, and choices. Norwegian Gem’s children’s program, teen disco, and kiddie pool also make it a family-friendly vacation choice.

You Should Know:: Norwegian Gem doesn’t offer the same thrill-seeking top-deck activities that the fleet’s newer, larger ships boast. Travelers looking for pulse-pounding amenities such as race tracks and open-air laser tag may prefer newer ships like Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Joy.

Holiday Cruise by adamsc8791

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Large Group

I really do like NCL. I would use them again but I would not necessarily choose the Gem. The destinations were nice though...Not much for holiday décor on the ship. A few Christmas trees and music. Tastefully done.

An Honest review — the goods and bads by jontrosky

Sail Date: / Traveled As: Couple

The gem is a good starter cruise for most people — I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who has sailed NCL mega ships like breakaway or bliss or epic ... classism onboard becomes clear as NCLs all inclusive isn’t so inclusive as there are a ton of add ons and buy ins as soon as you get onboard — Yes you will get free food — the buffet food is — passable — nothing to rave about.... the main dining halls make you feel fancy while eating slightly more Passable food (mainly cause of presentation, food isn’t really higher quality).... so this leave you with having to buy into their specialty dinning packages if you want quality food — They play the same game with booze — Yup, your unlimited drinking package is limited to drinks under 13$ — which in the overpriced vacation land ... every drink is basically 13 and up ... if you like beer and cheap wine, drinking package of great — if you like the finer things in life ... pay up Out of all the buy ins — I strongly suggest the spa buy in — once you explore the 4 main decks of the ship (that are not cabins) you will get bored pretty quick — the spa is a GREAT place to escape to and makes you feel like you’ve upgraded to “the haven” for about 100-150 per person (split that up for 7-8 days and it’s a fair price) — NOTE if the sea gets rough they will shut down the main spa / hot tub Over all — this is a great starter ship or budget ship to go on — it’s not gonna blow your away, but it’s just enough to have a good time at a reasonable price.

The best deserts are located at the Aft of the ship. eg. chocolate cookies, cakes and pies long after the main rooms desserts are picked over.
