Review summary

The itinerary was very nice, especially the overnight in Quebec City. The ship provided a great way to see some Canadian ports. More information could have been provided about each port of call. A more varied selection of things to do onboard should be given. The staff and crew were friendly and professional.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
The embarkation process was extremely slow and there was no place to sit. You were just put in a line with no explanation and no idea of how long the wait was going to be. No seating unless you were an NCL Haven guest.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food and service was good with a nice variety of food choices.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
If you are not into Trivia or gambling, then really not too much to do onboard. They did not offer any port talks, lectures or learning experiences.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The stage shows were excellent.

Children's Programs

Do not have any children

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
The waiters and room stewards were friendly, professional and did they job very well.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship was well maintained and common areas were always very clean. The layout and design of the ship was good.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was comfortable but it lacked any type of chair with a back. You always had to sit on the bed and that was not always idea. The cabin is in a very good location to access the other main areas of the ship, i.e. the Stardust Theater and the dining areas.

Ship tip

Get the earliest check-in time possible and then be expected to have to wait standing in line.

Ports of call

New York, New York

5 out of 5
New York City is a great place and offers so many different types of experiences. No excursion was taken. We planned our own activities for the three days prior to sailing and the two days after disembarking from the ship.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

5 out of 5
Really enjoyed this port. We did book an excursion so we could make the best use of our time there.

Quebec City, Quebec

5 out of 5
This is a great port to have on an itinerary. No, explored Quebec City on own.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland

5 out of 5
Really enjoyed this stop. No excursion taken here. Hired a taxi to show us around the area. We definitely saw more than with any of the ship's excursions.

Sydney, Nova Scotia Did not visit port

The stop at this port was canceled by the Captain due to future weather conditions so we could return to NYC on time.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Disembarkation process was typical.

I TOTALLY agree with this review!! This is my fourth cruise with Norwegian and my second time on the Gem. I was very disappointed that we were unable to complete the ports, and especially our interrupted time spent in Quebec City. I would have preferred to spend less time in Corner Brook since there wasn't much to do. My favorite port was in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was beautiful and the tour guide made it extra special.
