If you are cruising because of the itinerary like I was, (Japan is awesome) you can deal with the short comings of the ship like I did.

Service and Staff

Staff were great; aways helpful and pleasant.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
This was my first time on a Holland America ship. The desgn of the Westerdam took some getting used to. The lack of a main promenade deck with shops, clubs, eateries, customer service, future cruises, etc. all on the one floor required getting used to. Everything was spread out from Guest Services on floor 1 to the Future Cruises desk on floor 10. On some floors you had to walk down hallways with staterooms to get to where you are going.
Cabin / Stateroom

The balcony cabin I had was great and I liked it's location.
Ship tip
As I took this cruise because the itinerary not the ship so "it is what it is".
I did a ship excursion so I didn't get to visit the city. The excursion I did was ok but definitely not worth $300+. I had an excursion credit so I actually paid less than $50 out of my pocket.
