This cruise aboard the Norwegian Sun was all we expected. The Panama Canal transit was a highlight, sort of a "Bucket List" item. Having never been to South America, we wanted to see as many different countries as possible. Norwegian made that possible on a reasonable budget in a luxurious surrounding
If you enjoy sea days this itinerary works well. Two sea days in the beginning and two at the end. Only one port required tendering which is nice. The ship is smaller (78,000 tons) and with 2000 passengers to 900 crew the service is great.
I really enjoyed the cruise. The tours of the island really made us see the cultures of the people who resided there. I liked the private, small group tours of about six to eight persons because we could move faster and see more than with a huge bus load of people. Also, we could ask the driver questions about the island and hear his reply. I have been on the huge bus tours before, and they move much slower because if there is a stop where persons unload to see something, it takes more time to get them on and off the bus.
I've had much better cruises. Jonathan, the Russian violinist, jazz group. We're all excellent.
Same song and dance show every cruise. But they were all very good. Why not some new stuff, new games at pool. Live music by pool. the music by pool repeated. Over and over. It stunk.
Very short staffed, and a lot were not happy. The washy washy people were all lovely.
Desserts were blah. Ice cream and crape station were nice.
I enjoyed the itinerary and we are fans of Norwegian, but wouldn't book on the Norwegian Sun again. It felt cramped, and the layout was difficult to navigate. Also not as wheelchair friendly as it could've been due to the high way the thresholds were made.
We will never use NCL again, there freestyle dining is a mess and more annoying and frustrating then FREEstling. There policy of bringing absolutely NO liquids on board (including water) is absurd and only a money grab thing. They give you free ice water, juice, coffee .... but most times you have to look over the whole ship to find this.
Everything felt CHEAP and money grabbing, $28 for 12 bottels of 1l water is outrages.
Food was average, buffet was small and not worth the trip. Food was mostly bland and misted spicing.
Entertainment was awkward planned and the NCL shows were just ok. Performers were mostly of the same caliber.
Like I said overall cheap and chinsy!
NCL disorganization and antiquated website make you wonder if the teaser low cruise prices were or will be worth it. That said. Some other passengers had better experiences on NCL bigger newer ships. Caveat emptor buyer be aware. I would not sail the sun ship again without a rock bottom price matching the below average experience.
Overall a fantastic cruise. We had great luck with the weather, it rained only in Juneau. Glacier Bay was a lifetime experience, and the Captain having the ship do a slow pirouette in front of the largest glacier so that we could all get a good look was incredible. Add in great food and service, ten carefree days and interesting ports of call and you have a marvelous trip that was definitely worth the price!
Had a great time, beautiful scenery. food was great. enjoyed all of the tours and was very relaxing. This is the second time we have done this cruise in the last two years, and we would definitely recommend this to anyone. NCL is a great way to cruise and the freestyle dining is great.
Been there, done that... and have the tee-shirt. This will probably be my last cruise. If we go to Alaska or any other place, I believe travelling there, renting a car and making one's own itinerary is probably less stressful and more enjoyable. Personally, I don't like to feel like a walking ATM for the cruise line...everything is about money, at every turn. That's why I selected the 'drinks' and 'tips' included options which turned out to be deceitful as we had to pay for bottled water and all tips except for cabin attendant.
The worst part was that once the 'sale' was made, I could not get the salesperson (Beatriz Carter) to email me or call me back. I had an emergency at debarkation and needed to contact her regarding the insurance we purchased. As of today, she has not contacted me.
The entire time spent of the Norwegian Sun was worth it!--Freestyle dining is the way to go--They take the time to cater to the customer--I would highly recommend them! ---The towns, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan are all unique, yet the same in many ways--catering to the ships that dock there. Drop/replace Icy Strait Pt!
Last BIG trip of my life & celebration of 60th b'day. Fixed income doesn't allow big trips much. I'm more than willing to accept donations. HA! ;-)
Glaciers were the best part for me; Gorgeous & very interesting.
Disappointed with ship, food (bland & little menu variation), and service. Aroused after midnight for "life raft maintenance?" which was directly under my stateroom. Called to inquire & treated rudely.
FELL due to stateroom's balcony wheelchair ramp not secured to floor & FRACTURED a toe, not to mention bruised & sore everywhere else.
Ship is old & overpriced for its age & lack of amenities. Only ONE 110 plug for entire balcony "accessible" stateroom. NO plugs beside bed. Was told this would be upgraded in April 2018.
I suggest reading my entire review. Thanks for reading & I hope you have a much better cruise.
great stops. mediocre food. bad service. alaska is great and worth visiting but pick a different operator with a similar itinerary. I do not recommend going on Norwegian because if anything is messed up, they will not help you.
Never again! This SUN is not shining anymore.
August is one of the most rainy part of the year, but this is not the result. The ship is shaking without waves. The food is boring and tasteless. Our cabin was noisy and the bed was bad.
