Norwegian Breakaway overview

By Cruiseline.com - Updated Mar. 9, 2020

With three dazzling Broadway shows, five waterslides, 15 bars, and 27 restaurants, Norwegian Breakaway delivers a world-class, freestyle cruising experience that's perfect for a family vacation or romantic Caribbean getaway. Completely refurbished in 2018, this homage to New York City features New York-themed decor throughout the ship, and passengers will find plenty to remind them of the Big Apple, like three genuine Sabrett’s hot dog carts.

Norwegian onboard entertainment is among the best in the industry. Travelers rave about the Tony-nominated musical Rock of Ages, the Cirque Dreams & Dinner Jungle Fantasy, and the Broadway dance show Burn the Floor. If you’re looking to do some dancing of your own, Norwegian is famous for its glow-in-the-dark dance parties with DJs and face paint. The next morning, start the fun all over again with hours of action in the Aqua Park & Sports Complex. On date night, enjoy a special meal at Cagney's Steakhouse, satisfy your margarita cravings at the all-new Los Lobos Cantina, or treat yourself to a couples massage at the Mandara Spa while the kids stay busy in the Entourage teen center, Splash Academy, or Guppies Nursery.

Before you book

Why sail on Norwegian Breakaway: Norwegian Breakaway is one of the best cruise ships for families according to USA Today. The ship has a great mix of activities and entertainment for passengers of all ages, including high-energy sports and camp programs for youngsters as well as nightlife and tranquil spaces for adults.

You should know: Due to Norwegian's a la carte pricing, some travelers feel that they spend more onboard when sailing with this line. However, packages and special deals can help to defray these costs. Additionally, Norwegian's trademark freestyle cruising experience leads to larger crowds at peak hours. This concept provides added flexibility, but some travelers prefer more structure.

Norwegian Breakaway itineraries

Norwegian Breakaway cruises will sail from Miami in the summers of 2019 and 2020, relocating to New York in the fall for leaf-peeping cruises and finally to Port Canaveral for the winter. Itineraries include destinations across the Bahamas and the Caribbean, such as Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico, and Norwegian's private island, Harvest Caye, in Belize.

Always sail NCL. It's easy, very casual and laid back. Freestyle dining is the way to go.

New England Cruise by tcevins

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway

We have cruised 10 times and this by far was the worst cruise we have taken. The cruise was changed. Times in port were changed and excursion times were changed. We always felt special and it was truly a luxury experience on all of our cruises! This cruise missed this mark, sadly.

Deck 16 burgers are great. Deck 16 no wait for breakfast omelets. Large posters on wall are the kiosks and book your activities right away. Bring ear plugs. If you go to Taste for breakfast you get a decent order from a menu breakfast.

O'Sheen's Irish bar is the best place to go for an enjoyable sit down breakfast. It is also great for lunch, where you can even be served at the bar!

Rock of ages is a good show, but get on ship and make free reservation immediately. theater cant hold everyone on ship so even of you don't know you're gonna go, grab your seats. if you don't go, then just don't go. show is an hour and 45 min. a real Broadway show so get comfortable.
