Explorer of the Seas overview

By Cruiseline.com - Updated Mar. 9, 2020

Explorer of the Seas more than lives up to Royal Caribbean’s reputation for fun-filled cruise ships. With its nine-hole mini-golf course, FlowRider surfing simulator, and a 40-foot-high rock-climbing wall, this Voyager-class ship has plenty of activities to keep the whole family busy. Active travelers will enjoy Explorer’s ice-skating rink, sports courts, and upper-level jogging track, while passengers seeking relaxation can be pampered at the ship’s full-service spa or take in front-of-the-ship views from the whirlpool in the adults-only Solarium. For the kids, Explorer offers Royal Caribbean’s award-winning Adventure Ocean program, which brings education and entertainment opportunities to cruisers ages 3 to 11.

Explorer also boasts a vibrant nightlife, which includes more than 15 bars and lounges, live bands, dancing, and a 70s disco party. Theater aficionados have their choice of several Broadway-style original productions, and specialty dining options include burgers at Johnny Rockets, traditional Asian Cuisine at Izumi, and Royal Caribbean’s signature steakhouse, Chops Grille.

The ship, which took its maiden voyage back in 2000, is scheduled for modernization through the multimillion-dollar Royal Amplified program in 2020. Upgrades will include laser tag, an escape room, three-story-high waterslides, and SkyPad, a pulse-pounding virtual reality experience that combines trampolines and bungee cords. Explorer will also receive two new bars: The Bamboo Room and Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade.

Explorer of the Seas lives up to its name, sailing out of a variety of homeports including Miami, Civitavecchia (Rome), and Southampton, England. The ship will be spending the winters of 2019, 2020, and 2021 in the Caribbean, and the summers in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

Before you book

Why sail Explorer of the Seas:Families and other travelers looking for all-day fun. With many of Royal Caribbean’s signature onboard activities, including a surf simulator, full-size ice skating rink, and Broadway-style shows, Explorer of the Seas delivers many of the amenities of a big ship with fewer crowds and the navigational ease of a midsize vessel.

You should know:While Explorer of the Seas has enough onboard activities to entertain passengers for extended periods at sea, it still doesn’t offer quite the same variety of activities, dining venues, and nightlife that the fleet's larger ships do. Passengers craving a thrilling mega-ship experience may prefer Royal Caribbean’s state-of-the-art Oasis-class vessels, such as their newest ship, Symphony of the Seas.

Cruise Great. RC is not upstanding. by jbarnhill5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Explorer of the Seas

Cruise good. Royal Caribbean does not honor prepaid Gift Cards and right before the cruise incorrectly removed the Casino Royale award and threatened to cancel my kids cruise. Was unwilling to address and forced us to pay immediately to not lose the trip. Very unprofessional.

Some issues, overall great cruise by heathermnewell

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Explorer of the Seas

Overall on this sailing, I was left unimpressed with the Guest Services team. However, the waitstaff and other staff members (entertainment team, bartenders, room stewards, etc) were all great. There was also an issue at the Antigua pier with clear signage for excursion lineup. The documents provided advised to go to the "end of the pier", but the waiting area was actually on the pier, right off the gangway. The food in Windjammer was great - good variety, great quality. The food in the MDR was mostly good quality, but it seems that the portions have become smaller than I remembered. Making it more of a requirement to order multiple items for each course to be satiated. The food in the specialty restaurants was really very good. Service in the Windjammer, MDR and Chops was great. Izumi service was a bit slow, we found ourselves sitting and looking for our server on more than one occasion.

Less than great by althompson

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Explorer of the Seas

The port staff in Miami were not compassionate to my situation of traveling with minor children. I tried to explain that I took these same kids aboard Carnival last year and all I needed was their birth certificates, so I assumed that's all I would need for RC. Instead, I was told, this is Royal Caribbean's rules and it is on the website. I didn't book with RC and had no reason to view the website, when I was basing it on my past cruise experience. It was a terrible way to start the vacation.

The breakfast in the dining room was excellent. We went there the last 2 days...wish we had done it sooner.

Don't buy drink passes till you get on the ship, you can buy them daily for the same price and be aware the ship will run out of bottled water but you can bring it on at each port. Free sandwiches muffins brownies and pizza along with free water and iced tea on deck 5,very good service and food.

Don't get in a hurry to buy gifts or extra services (spa, upgraded dining, etc.) Each night you will get a sheet outlining the next day's activities that will have specials - like half price spa day! Significant savings.
