Know blackout dates for package deals to avoid you from purchasing something and not having the ship honor it due to blackout dates. Inquire about staff size since our trip appeared to be extremely short staffed. The poor team that did worked were working 16 hr/day in diff areas to try to accomodat
Most of what you will need and/or looking for will be on deck 7. The gym was always crowded first thing in the morning, so if you're able to workout mid-morning or in the afternoon then you'll be much happier!
Have been on the Star before -- and it's feeling a little tired after having experienced the Breakaway several times. A couple lapses in service, but overall a good experience.
Make reservations for dining. whether it is the main or the Specialty restaurants; it will save you time.
If you are a smoker, there is a quiet little deck at the 5 O'clock Somewhere Bar that is great for cigars. When getting off the ship, the line is very long for the free style debarkation.
Breakfast in O'Sheehan's or Topsider's. For seafood night, don't miss the shrimp (all-you-can-eat) and the seafood salad in Market Cafe). Went there for starters before heading off to Aqua for the main dinner.
The Captain on this ship was awesome. Daily he gave us historical information about the port we were entering. He also kept us updated when the sea was a tad rough.
I wondered why this ship's transatlantic itinerary was so cheap a couple months prior to sailing. Then I realized it is due to the age of the ship. The crew appeared to be new also. For examples: not only the long dining times but also the muster drills. Yes plural. My muster station was in the stardust theater. So I asked the crew who was responsible for my staying alive, why were we told to come here and drown? I said look how long it is taking everyone to get out of here. The crew replied there are four exit doors. I said I know and all four exit doors are being used now. Then he said there are six exit doors. Then he there are eight exit doors. (Two more exit doors or four more exit doors behind the stage??????
I understand that there are differences in culture. However, MANY times during the cruise certain groups were very rude. Pushing / cutting in line, bumping into you without apology, rushing the elevators before people can get out…. etc. I heard complaints from many people. This was much worse than previous cruises. Possibly there should be a brief “presentation” at the beginning g of the cruise explaining that we are all on the ship together and emphasizing proper manners.
This is an older ship but is in pretty good shape. The staff was all really friendly and seemed very happy. The photography folks were the best we've had the pleasure to work with on previous cruises, too!
NCL did a great job with the Freestyle Dining options--it was our first time and we thought it would be difficult, but it was very easy, with minimal wait time.
We were dissapointed in a few things:
1. They would not open the doors between our balcony and our cousins' balcony next door--we asked several staff but they refused and we were NOT happy (it has been done so before on previous cruises and the door is there)
2. We had to obtain our invoice and custom forms--on all other cruises we've been on, they were delivered to our stateroom.
3. Although we chose to walk off with our luggage, they did not know this and there were no insturcutoins or labels given to us. To be honest, they may have known this from our input in the system, but we have always been asked to confirm before leaving the ship. If we had been first time cruisers, we would have been lost.
4. They charged $30.00 per day, per person to use the spa (quite pool and sauna)--way too much. They might receive more customers if they offered a much lower price.
