Had a great time! by MolandChris

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was our first time on Norwegian. The Getaway was a great ship--clean, new (2014), decent sized rooms (had a balcony). The food was great and the staff were super nice. We got the drink package as a free perk--it was great! I'd definitely recommend that. I enjoyed all the ports except Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The people there were pushy and aggressively trying to get us to buy stuff. Our friends took the waterfall tour and had an amazing day, while we stayed in town and got hounded. If we go back, I'll definitely do a tour instead. The other ports were fabulous, especially the private island in the Bahamas. Suggest trying all inclusive Mr. Sanchos in Cozumel--we had a blast!

Tip--download the Norwegian app on your phone. For $7/day you can text and call people on board. It was soooooo worth it when traveling with other couples!

On board, we ate at the Illusionarium, which was fun (magic show and 3 course meal). The Brazilian steakhouse was great and I'm not a big meat eater. The steakhouse was phenomenal too. Really good food at the restaurants that are extra. I wasn't super impressed with the free main dining rooms (Taste & Savor). The food was fine, but not great. We also enjoyed the dance show Burn the Floor. Mini-golf was fun but lots of kids were there.

We Usually cruise with Royal Caribbean. In comparison, the ships are comparable (depending on size), the staff are both great. If you're more casual and want to wear shorts and flip flops to dinner and don't care about shows or on board activities, go with Norwegian. Great ship for being laid back at the pool. If you're looking for upscale dining, great shows, bigger pools, and more amenities, go with Royal.

Cruise to Western Caribbean by dovpollak

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Overall, this was an outstanding experience.  We especially liked the food options.  It was nice to have the buffet available and the various vegetarian dishes.  The restaurants were great with good choices.  Entertainment was great, but the music in various parts of the ship was way too loud.  In some of the destinations, it was not pleasant to have to wait for the tender boats to get off the ship.

Great ship. Great cruise. They have to change their tipping policy. by drawoh519939585

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship, the ports, the food, the service were great. The best ship I have ever been on. The only major issue that I had was with tipping. They take out $13.50 per person from your credit card for every day on the cruise. Which was supposed to cover the wait staff and room steward. But since we were comped 4 specialty restaurants and used them they also charged you 18% of the check so you were paying twice for the same service. I also tipped at the other restaurants.

On one of their daily programs it stated that if you wanted to make a change to the amount of tips on your credit card go to guest services. Which I did. I was told they cannot do anything about it and that I would have to fill out a form and send it to corporate to make the credit. They didn't say that on the daily programs they gave out. Anyway since I tipped everyone on my own and was going to tip the room steward I requested that all the tip money they withheld on my credit card be credited back to me. As I was pretty upset the manager at guest services emailed the request to corporate for me. My daughter in the other cabin had the same issues. Waiting on a refund of the tip money they took out of my credit card.  But don't be afraid to book this ship. It was fantastic.

This is my 14th cruise between NCL, RCL, Carnival, Disney, etc... I honestly believe that the service level has drop tremendously over the years.... I use to enjoy the extra pampering... that is why I have choose to cruise 14 x's in the past 20 years... Don't let me scare you it is OKAY just not great!!

Enjoyable Cruise by blanks1057

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

As a veteran cruisers the Getaway was completely different from any other ship that we have been on.

We loved that different food venues.  The specialty restaurant's especially Cagney's was great.  However the coffee though out the ship was terrible.

Also the Tropicana restaurant is very noisy as they have musical entertainment while you are eating and you cannot hear the person across the table from you.

The cabins were a little short on storage but well appointed.  The room TV has limited stations MSNBC, CNBC, FoxNews and the BBC.  There is a movie channel with pay-per-view at 9.95.

The casino was set up very nicely with smokers and non smokers separated.

The one thing we did not like was the atrium with its large TV screen as it was always extremely noisy.

Alis and Pedja were great by hburchel

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. It was very restful. Personnel were friendly.

We especially enjoyed Alis and Pedja, both their music and their warm personalities. They were the highlight of the trip for us. I'd seen Legally Blond- the movie. I actually liked it better than the musical. I got tired of the ":Oh, My God." phrase. Taking God's name in vain really bothers us, as He has blessed our lives abundantly and we honor Him. Also some of the dancing was quite suggestive, but I guess that's what folk want these days.

Norwegian Getaway Carribean Cruise by davidhamilton06

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was our 4th cruise and 2nd with Norwegian. Everything aboard the cruise ship was extraordinary. The food was awesome. The entertainment was spectacular. there was an overwhelming number of dining choices and we loved every meal that we had. The selection of bars was never ending, all of them offered excellent service and drink choices. Our favorites,  O'Sheean's Bar & Grill.

Le Bistro for Dinner and Burn the Floor for Entertainment. We loved Freestyle Cruising and came back after trying two other cruise lines. When we book future cruises they will all be Norwegian.

Awesome cruise! by selweski

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We had the best time ever on a cruise.  We met many people from all over and had lots of fun with them.  The ports were great and the weather was beautiful.  The staff on the Norwegian Getaway was very nice (for the most part) and the food was excellent.  We will definitely cruise with NCL again.

enjoyed our first cruise! by pinkard19

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

overall we enjoyed our first cruise on the getaway. the ship was brand new and very nice. the crew was very nice. my only complaint was the buffet food. it was mediocre at best. a lot of it was dry and slightly cold. on the other hand the upgraded dining (cagneys, le bistro, moderno and teppanyaki) were all top notch. the beverage package was awesome with an amazing assortment of high end liquors to choose from. but for me the beer selection was awful. it was all beers that taste very similar. not one ipa and only one dark beer, guiness. but overall it was a positive experience

Nice Ship, Good Organnisation, But Busy by CN2016

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The Getaway is a pretty new ship with an excellent quality.

All the program is very well organised. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. Good selection of quality food.

The staterooms are in very good condition as one would expect on a new ship. Lots of little details are (positively) surprising the guest.

The shore programs seem to be overpriced. Also the beverage package or on-board internet is far too expensive - also in comparison to other cruise lines.

A significant cost is the Service Charge (minimum 13.50$), which is only been introduced after booking. It will automatically be charged to your account every day.

One need to be aware of the 4.000 people on board. And in the approached ports there are several ships, also bringing a couple thousands tourists. So everything gets busy and there is only little traditional living any more in the areas where the ships stop by.

Norwegian Getaway by christensen5752

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

spent a week on the Getaway and we had fun. This ship is very nice but always seemed crowded to me even though it is a big ship.  But what would you expect with 4000 plus people sharing the space.  All of the ports were nice and was really impressed with Costa Maya.  Just a small town surrounded by jungle literally as far as you could see.

The shows were good and the comedians very good. Recommend spending the money for the Illusionarium show.

The only negative I have about this trip was the food. In my opinion the buffet should not be the best meals of the day. I really look forward to the evening "sit down" meal and ordering from the menu.  The choices seemed a little weak and the food was bland. After the first night I thought maybe it was just an off night for the kitchen but it was every night.  We paid extra for the dinner show I mentioned above and that meal was ok. And the Japanese restaurant was also ok.  But the main dining rooms offered meals that I could have done better in my own kitchen.  I expected more from NCL and was disappointed with the food.

one other small issue. My son turns 13 in a few weeks and when he went to check out the kids activities they would not under any circumstances let him participate in the teen stuff, for the 13-16 age group. Even talked to the person in charge for that one but no way.  He didn't participate in any of that stuff since he couldn't get his brain around being in a group of 10-12 year olds when he is so close the teenhood.

a similar situation happened on another cruise line and they had no problem bumping him up.

overall we had fun and enjoyed the entire week

Excellent entertainment by Sad18707

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The entertainment on this ship was so much better than any cruise we have ever taken.  The food was good but not as good as it use to be 15 years ago.  The ship was very nice.  There were so many kids on the ship that you couldn't get in the hot tub, there were always about 15 kids in at all times but all the kids were well behaved.  There is an adult only section where your could get in the hot tubs and that was nice but no shade.

over all we had a wonderful time..

Poor service by hatchy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Norwegian are all about the money, very poor customer service, staff are rude, food is cold and not very good, they don't seem to throw away any food, instead adding the old food to the fresh which has just come out, this is a very unsafe practice and it's just a matter of time before someone gets seriously ill

great ship, cool excursions by temp2657

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

the Getaway is much bigger than the last ship we were on (Sun) and we love all the amenities.  Dining choices are great and food is excellent.  Legally Blonde musical was a blast.  We love all the ports and my personal favorite is Costa Maya because the area is clean with a nice pool and a lot of stores and activities.

Getaway - So So by wendywestrick

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We've cruised NCL before so we were disappointed with the service we received while cruising the Getaway. While sitting by the pool area or just above the pool area, we were waited on once for a drink and that's only because I waved her down.  During the shows (entertainment, comedy or game shows) not once were we asked if we wanted a drink unless I stood up and waved someone over (that occurred twice while in the headliners bar).  The restaurant Savor and Taste - very, very unorganized and a lot of chaos.  One evening, my family of four were asked to share 2 menus.  Really?  Servers and waiters just weren't friendly or personable. A lot of the time, they seemed confused or just really really busy.  Ship is nice - don't get me wrong.  But service on NCL has always been top notch and this time we were really disappointed. One other disappointment is the balcony in our stateroom.  So small, only 2 people can fit at a time and our view of the ocean is obstructed by a white tin roof.  Not just our room but all balcony rooms - Sad..

Best cruise ever by Lingy10

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The NCL Getaway cruise was incredible!  Food at all meals terrific. Breakfast had an array of lox, smoke fish, bacon, eggs, cereals and just about anything else you'd want to eat. Lunch was a huge buffet of salads, cold cuts, Asian food every day, pizza, burgers, dogs, soups, etc.  Hand-dipped ice cream with all the toppings every day along with custard from the machines.  We choose to dine in the smaller complimentary restaurants...Taste or Savor.  Every night different choices of main entrees.  Had conch fritters first evening.  chicken Parmesan, steak Dianne, prime rib, duck entrees among some of the choices.  Beverage Package all top shelf and the pours were very generous. I'll sail "like a Norweigen" anytime ⛴⚓️⚓️

staff on board discriminate against non-english speaker by Cruise323

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

while we played blackjact on the cruise, the dealer totally discriminated against my friends who can't speak English. It was not simply rude. I can understand if the dealer was being rude to everyone, but the dealer was only rude to people who can't speak English, that is discrimination.
