Positive review by A202420

Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We took a carnival cruise, sans kids (in 1995) in a porthole room on a new ship.  We were "don't think I will cruise again" customers.  To "I look forward to another one in a couple years!".  Food was amazing...we didn't even need to venture past the buffet.  Loved the freedom to eat when we wanted and wear what we wanted.  NCL is so much for us in that way.   It was clean.  It was fun.   If you intend to imbibe, the drink package was GREAT.  Top shelf liquor included.  Was waiting for a catch - there was none.   If I had to think of a con, it was just being among constant people - BUT this was the first time we had a room with a balcony.  It was exactly what we needed.  It was our escape when we  needed it.  It was so enjoyable.  We loved the Jost Van Dyke excursion....we hated the Blue Lagoon excursion.  In the Bahamas, I would take a spa day on the ship....unreal Spa....enjoyed our vacation.....NCL is the line I will use when we book again.

Great Cruise! by joegannon

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

This was easily the best Caribbean cruise I have been on.  I could easily see that Norwegian learned a lot from earlier cruise ships.  The new 8th level outside formal walk way with outdoor restaurants was a great addition.  How could they do without it ever again?  The 4K passengers were not an issue.  I think the benefit is that they now have more money to spend on entertainment.  We really enjoyed how they have many venues, and the same performance is at the venue many nights of the cruise.  If you miss it one night, you can catch it another.  I also loved that they moved from a few very large restaurants, to many smaller restaurants.  We never had to wait to be seated.   The one thing that I would change is the daily deck loud entertainment.  We could not escape mc yelling all the time or the noise and get a shaded spot to sit on the deck, or even up a level or 2.  There were a few spots at the front of the ship, and the back but zero shade.  I would like to be able to see and hear the daily deck music, but it was either way too loud, or you couldn't hear it at all.  We were just on another NCL cruise in December.  The daily island type live music deck was fantastic.  It was just there making the atmosphere.  The new loud, in your face daily party, is not what we enjoy.  Although a lot of people did seem to like it.   All in all, it was still fantastic.   I would definitely seek out, NCL's  new larger ships.  So much more personal and classy.  Just turn down the volume on deck a little.

Best cruise ever by suba

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Went with our son & daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.  awesome cruise!! Have cruised more than 25 times before and this was the best ever.  A great ship with outstanding staff on the entire ship attending to every need we had.  Stayed in the Havens which was wonderful.  The dining options were numerous and great.  The family really enjoyed the ropes course and there was even a smaller course for the 3 year old.  She spent over an hour on the course.  The kids club was great and we enjoyed the show they put on. Water slides were fun for the whole family.  The wine tasting musical was a lot of fun and have never seen a wine tasting done in this fashion.  They made it very difficult to come back to reality and the work day world.  Thank you Norwegian!

This was our first cruise... by BoomerangTX

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Escape

This was our first cruise on Norwegian, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The ship is very pretty and well-designed, and it is extremely well-kept. The staff and crew were absolutely wonderful, professional and attentive. The food and service on Lido deck and in the MDR was as good as we have ever had on a cruise. The shows and musicians were extremely entertaining and the comedians were hysterical. Our room steward, Herold, was one of the best we have ever had. He and his assistant were fantastic. We stopped at Charlotte Amalie, Nassau and Tortola, and had a great time at all three ports. We can’t wait until our Norwegian Cruise To Bermuda in 2019.

NORWEGIAN ESCAPE = FANTASTIC! by TDHNJ

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Let me start off by stating that my wife and I have never cruised before and we are both in our 50s. We weren't quite sure what to expect. I value others opinions but also want to make my own decisions, so I sort of take reviews like movie/restaurant critics, where I like to use my own judgment. I view the glass as half-full, not half empty.

We booked the guarantee balcony and chose the Ultimate Beverage Package and 250 internet minutes (4 kids/work access). We were given a room on the 10th floor, just 1 room away from what was considered mid-ship. Our excitement for this cruise was over the top, just like when you were a kid on Christmas Eve. From the moment we arrived on Saturday, 4/9 until we left on 4/16, the entire cruise was amazing.

We had a variety of drinks (all great), including Guinness (in the can) in the pub, along with many frozen and premium cocktails. We ate in the Manhattan room 3 times, along with Savor and Taste 1 time each, the buffet (seafood night) 1 night and the pub 1 night. The food was quite good and you could get as much of what you wanted. Some nights we had 2 appetizers each and an entree, along with dessert. The service was superb, the staff was friendly and the overall experience of this cruise was memorable. Make sure you do the ropes course. It is well-worth the butterflies you will feel. It is a rush!

I have to give 5 stars to the Cruise Director, Silas Cook, along with Andre, his Asst. CD and their staff. I don't know where they get their energy from, but they go from early morning to late at night and they really do a great job.

Since this was our first cruise, I have nothing to compare it to. I did have some issues, though minor in nature, but the chair situation in and around the pools. needs to be addressed. There were way too many chairs reserved (towels, magazines, etc.) that went unused for a lengthy period of time. I also thought the ports were well done, except more time should be provided in St. Thomas and Tortola.

Beautiful cruise, but the food and the shows ok by lenieves

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

I loved the ship, and the people who worked there, but the food and the shows were mediocre, the same food everyday! Also I do not like all the wasted bread at the main dining room and how you have to paid extra for food, already paid  extra for three restaurants.

הפלגה חלומית by alonf

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

We enjoyed a very luxurious vacation, good food, casino, concerts, fancy new ship. This is our first cruise. We made the booking through United cruise, we received emails and drinks package and package restaurants. Tours ordered through the website of the NCL. The ship set time, the luggage came into the room a few hours after leaving the beach. Our room (10 238) - suite, was excellent. MX ordered and received it - a quiet room with a private balcony. The team takes care of all the time to clean the room. We unrestricted Internet package - expensive, but lets keep in touch while most of the voyage - including calls tux. Should pay attention to the occasionally necessary to connect to the Internet, but have coverage Wei according to good throughout the ship. High-level performances. Both concerts included in the cruise ticket but still have reservations. Another performance cost about $ 35 and included a meal. Excellent restaurant. Although the food in the dining rooms (restaurants included in the price), excellent restaurants add variety. We dined at a French restaurant - excellent onion soup, Italian restaurant and restaurant Hbrzliait (Pogo-style de Chao). Three tours were very nice. Snirklno and we saw two stunning beaches and in the third we swam with dolphins. Should take into account not really travelers who come to sites only taste them. What this means is that most cruise vacation. The interesting tour was the most beautiful island of the British Virgin Islands Norman. The boat's crew was dedicated and caring, and stunning underwater scenery. Swimming with DOLPHIN left us with mixed feelings. On the one hand encounter with the dolphin is unique and exciting, on the other hand everything is very touristy and if you want a photo or a movie from the meeting will have to pay tens of dollars more for an experience that is very expensive. In summary - highly recommended, vacation with interest and fun!

One of the BEST cruises.. by paulschmidt

Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

A wonderful and relaxing cruise. The thing to us about NCL is the service you receive is wonderful. The ports we had a great time in the cities and the food aboard the ship especially the specialty dining was excellent 1st class. I recommend NCL as I believe you get a lot for your money. The Drink package and specialty dining for example you just pay the gratitudes... Ooh don't forget to visit H2o for a relaxing time..

5 star cruise. This cruise... by DelacruzFamily

5 star cruise. This cruise has EVERYTHING beyond what you need, good amount of room space, enough activities on board, and well made. Nothing at all wrong with this cruise, except the fact that the pool can be crowded most of the time. ♥️

Ropes course and plank are fantastic! Definitely try the Aqua Racer (blue tube) waterslide as well. Spice H2O was definitely my favourite place to relax, and it's conveniently right above the buffet. Would recommend an Aft room.

Escape by StLouisCardinals

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

After reading numerous poor reviews, chats and comments, I was a bit apprehensive to go on the Escape.  Our cruise departed March 12th.  Myself, wife and 11 year old twin daughters had a great time. We were in cabin number 8134, a mini suite with a large balcony.   Marco, our cabin steward was always friendly and kept the room nice. We enjoyed the cruise director Silas and his staff.  The service and staff were excellent, accommodating and pleasant.  We did not feel crowded even though there were over 4900 passengers on board.   Based on previous reviews, we did not have a problem finding a chair near the pool on sea days.  However, I did wake up one morning to get a chair at 7:00.  I should have stayed in and slept.  My experience with the pool.  When I got hot, I dipped into the pool.  If I wanted to sit around the pool, I could find a place to sit. An opinion on food is subjective. My kids and I ate lunch in the Garden Café every date.  We thoroughly enjoyed the food and had no trouble finding tables.  Staff was quick to remove plates, silverware and clean tables.  My wife went to Margaretville one time and enjoyed it. Our fist night, my family dined at Manhattan. We ate Italian at La Cucina,  had a great tasting steak at Cagney’s.  My wife and kids enjoyed the Japanese at Teppenyaki.   We all were entertained by the preparation of the food and the chefs made sure it was fun.  Our last night, we ate at the French restaurant, Le Bistro.  We went to the dinner show, The Brat Pack and had a GREAT TIME.  We knew the show was PG 16 but took our daughters.  I was a little embarrassed I took them but we all really enjoyed it.  In the Atrium, we enjoyed Dancing With The Cruise Staff (I think that was the name) and The Perfect Couple.  Both shows were extremely funny. You may want to get there a little early for seats, otherwise, I did not mind standing. My wife and daughter enjoyed Vocal Overdrive. I saw three different shows with the comedians on board, enjoying each show.  We saw After Midnight.  Great singing, dancing and costumes but I did not care for the show. Once again, this is my opinion. My kids and I enjoyed the ropes course and zip line.  We even got my wife up there for the first time in her life.   Unfortunately, our last port day was canceled due to a sick passenger.   I got over it fast and enjoyed my last day. I spoke with many passengers and all were having a great time, with NO COMPLAINTS.  Let me know if you have any questions,

Not Impressed with NCL Escape by SBonilla1986

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Normally, I do not leave comments but this cruise deserved one. I noticed many people on multiple sites have mentioned the emergency incident for the March 12-19 cruise.  There is obviously a concern about the ill person; however, after the individual was taken off to care for, the rest of us should of received better customer service. I have traveled by cruise before and understand emergencies happen.  My disappointment was with the overall customer service. We were not told "let me see what I can do to help as I know this is difficult for everyone that has spent a lot of money". Instead we received "I can't help you. No refunds. That's all".

The food was not the best and I expected more for such a elegant ship. Numerous times, I had to tell my waiter for refills or silverware.  For those that say, there are thousands on the ship...yes, there are, however, if waiters do not know how to work in a fast pace environment...a new job is needed.

My father and I won received this trip due to our player status at a high end casino. We are dedicated customers and have traveled with Norwegian before and have another trip planned at the end of the year. While in NCL casino, my father placed a bet at the craps table and the lady working the table moved his bet somewhere he did not ask her to. Then when his number hit, she claimed he was off. He plays the same way every time and explained it to the supervisor who ended up siding with the employee.  Afterwards, my father asked them to review the video and audio because it was the principle. After all of the "we know our employees are right and you're wrong" they realized my father was INDEED RIGHT! There was not apology made by the lady.

For the amount of money we all spent that week, it was not worth it. NCL has tight slot machines, rude employees, bland food, excessive charges and bad customer service. This is my experience and there's no need to express rude responses. To each their own. Please respect my own opinion.

Too Many Medical Emergencies by Robbyv13

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Positives- New ship, very nice. Service was very good. Food and drinks were great. The specialty restaurants are definitely worth the upgrade. Our room was on the 13th deck with balcony. Very roomy and comfortable.

Negatives- Pool water was VERY cold. No one wanted to get in (unless you were from the Artic Region), especially later in the evening. They need to be able to heat the pool to maintain a comfortable temperature.

They allow smoking inside the ship in the casino area. This was very unpleasant for me and my kids. You have to walk through there to get to most restaurants. People just sit and smoke all day...very obnoxious.

Our last port (Bahamas) was canceled due to another medical emergency (2 on this cruise) which we have learned is a common event for the cruise industry. Our kids Spring Break was less than awesome after we sold them on how much fun it would be to visit Atlantis Waterpark and then informed them we weren't going. The ship had to take a massive detour towards Puerto Rico in order to rendezvous with U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and lost several hours of travel time. Until the cruise lines begin medical screening for medical conditions that should preclude people from being out in the middle of the ocean to begin with....I'll find another way to get there. One person shouldn't be able to disappoint 4900 people.

Amazing ship! We are about to embark on our 3rd cruise on the Escape. We Honeymooned in March 2016 for 2wks on it and had a blast. Staff was very friendly, entertainment was amazing and there was plenty of activities to enjoy. I am definitely looking forward to our upcoming cruises aboard it again to enjoy time with my husband and to celebrate our 2nd anniversary!

Escape from Escape while you still can by DavidE73

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Escape / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We are a family of 5 - two adults and children aged 5,8 and 9.  This is a fairly lengthy review that is divided into sub-headings Embrakation, Stateroom, Service, Crowds, Smoking, Kids Club, Fitness Center, Complimentary Dining, Specialty Dining, Activities, Vibe Beach Club, Entertainment and Disembarkation.  If you find this review to be too long to read the whole thing, you may want to scroll down to parts you are interested in.

This was our fifth cruise and our second Norwegian Cruise.  We went on the Getaway a year ago and we had a great time and booked another Cruise with Norwegian.  We would not go on another Norwegian Cruise and we would not recommend the Escape.

Embarkation:

Our embarkation experience is best described as a stampede.  There is an adults only are on the ship called Vibe and you can buy a Vibe pass for something like $100 for the cruise.  However, there are only 70 passes available and they are high sought after.  We lined up to be first on the ship so we could buy the Vibe passes and when the gates opened, it was seriously like a stampede of migrating wildebeasts.  People were pushing and shoving.  Someone in a wheelchair nearly got toppled over by the stampede.  Someone is going to seriously get hurt one of these days.  I was in the very front of the line and 4 or 5 people pushed ahead of me, but by the time I got my Vibe passes they had already sold over half of them.  First, one person can buy an unlimited number of Vibe passes, back to back cruisers get first dibs and those in the Haven can have their concierge purchase the passes before they actually embark.  So, after lining up and surviving the stampede unscathed, your chances of actually getting a Vibe pass are next to none.

Stateroom:

We had a family size stateroom. All of the family size staterooms are on the deck where Splash Academy is (deck 3) which is the kids club.  The room was a good size and the storage space was more than adequate for a family of five.  The TV was in the weirdest spot - in the tiny hallway between the sleeping area and the bathroom.  Who would put a TV there where you can't see it lying in bed.  Although, who actually watches TV on a cruse anyway.

Overall Service:

This is where things REALLY lacked.  The service was well below mediocre.  It appeared that many staff treated your request as a burden, from asking for a drink from the waitstaff to making a simple request of the cabin steward.  The staff seemed apathetic, uninterested and there was a general sense of disenchantment.  I asked some of the staff if they worked on other Norwegian ships.  Almost all of the staff I asked had and worked on other ships and without hesitation confirmed they liked working on the other ship(s) better than the Escape.  Many went as far as to say they hated working on the Escape.  I think when Norwegian changed ownership there was a massive culture change within the organization that has impacted employee satisfaction.  That in turn has a major impact on a guest's experience.  When we went on the Getaway, the staff were awesome. They were happy, friendly, helpful and looked like they were having a good time too.  On the escape, it was the total opposite.  I can't stress enough the impact the staff have on the ship culture, passenger enjoyment and the overall cruise experience.  Norwegian scores a failing grade on service.  Also, customer service was just dreadful.  The desk staff honestly couldn't care less about a problem or issue and tried to solve everything by sending chocolate covered strawberries to your room.  These are readily available in the buffet.  Anyway, I found customer service to be completely unhelpful and the desk staff were void of personality and sported an "I don;t care" attitude.

Crowds:

This was a major problem on the ship.  MAJOR!!  Norwegian built this enormous ship but the extra space (compared to the other Breakaway class ships) was used to accommodate more passengers.  The common areas (lounges, pools, bars, restaurants) weren't expanded.  As a result, it was crowded everywhere.  You couldn't find a deck chair or a seat in a lounge or at the buffet.  Every space was wall to wall people.  Our kids like to go to Spice H20 at the back of the ship for an outdoor dance party.  It was just too crowded - to the point where you could barely move.  We tried going there a couple of nights, but just left because it was over crowded.  If you don't like crowds, this isn't the ship for you.

The elevators were TERRIBLE.  They were always full.  Sometimes you had to wait 8 or 9 elevators to get on one.  They stopped at every single floor.  It seriously could take 10 or 15 minutes to get from deck 3 to deck 16.  It was faster to walk up 10 or 12 flights of stairs than take the elevator.  If you get stressed out waiting and waiting or by stopping at very single floor, this may not be the right ship for you.  There just aren't enough elevators to accommodate the number of people onboard.

Smoking:

If you're like me and find cigarette smoke absolutely disgusting, this may not be the best ship for you.  It was our biggest criticism of the Getaway (and we really liked our Getaway Cruise).  A big reason we booked on the Escape is that Norwegian included in their marketing information information that there were far fewer smoking areas.  On the Getaway, the smoke from the Casino permeated through all decks 6, 7 and 8.  Norwegian promoted that the Casino would be entirely non-smoking.  The policy was later changed - I guess enough slot machine coin poppers that smoke complained about the non-smoking situation.  Norwegian would rather have smokers inside popping coins and losing money than outside on a deck smoking.  Who cares about subjecting all the healthy non-smokers to wafts of filthy disgusting second hand smoke.as long as coins keep going  in the slot machines, right?

Kids Club - Splash Academy

If there is one thing that Norwegian does right, it's kids programming.  I can't express how much our kids loved Splash Academy.  My youngest cried on the last night because he was going to miss the Splash Academy.  The staff there are all awesome.  Two of the staff (Elmo and Doughnut) were on the Getaway, so our kids were super excited.  The physical space of the kids club is really nice and is much nicer than the kids camp on the Getaway. Norwegian gets top marks for kids programming, which is second to none.  Something to note is that the kids club staff are not included in the tip pool.  None of your gratuities goes to these staff.  We tipped the splash academy staff separately....they really deserved it.

Buffet:

It was very crowded all the time.  I felt a little bit like a pig at a trough trying to wedge myself in to get a morsel of food.  The food was so-so.  Some things were good and others pretty bad.  There was good variety and options changed daily.  The quality of the food at the buffet I thought was way better on the Getaway and that it had gone downhill on the Escape. I give the buffet a barely passing grade.

Complimentary Dining - a la carte:

Taste and Savor are the two main complimentary dining areas that are open for breakfast and dinner.  It's the same restaurant - just separate locations.  I ate there a few times for dinner on the Getaway and it was okay.  However, on the Escape I had dinner there once and it was terrible and never went back.  I also had breakfast there once and it was terrible and I never went back.  The food was gross, the service was terrible and it took forever for the food to come out. Taste and Savor.....epic fail.

I really liked O Sheehan's on the Getaway and there was an O'Sheehan's on the Escape.  However, it would be more aptly named "O'Shi-ty's"  First of all the food took literally forever to come out, even when it wasn't busy.  No exaggeration....sometimes over half an hour for a hotdog.  When the food eventually came out, it wasn't always what you ordered or the fries we soggy or the food was under or over cooked.  A restaurant that I really like on the Getaway was a complete disappointment on the Escape.

I didn't try Jimmy Buffet's Cheeseburger in Paradise.  In all of the promotional literature that Norwegian put out before we booked, this was supposed to be a complimentary restaurant.  However, when we got onboard, it was all of a sudden a paid restaurant.  WTF??  Apparently it was so popular that Norwegian figured they could make a few extra bucks and changed the restaurant from complimentary to paid.  Poor form, Norwegian.

Specialty Dining

I ate at the Brazilian steakhouse one night and it was very good.  Good food, good service and overall good experience.  The Pub Belly Boys restaurant was awesome.  I ate there twice. Amazing food and fantastic service.  If you're booked on the Escape and can't get a refund, make sure you you eat there.  I also ate at the Jose Garcas restaurant, which was also very good.  Based on my experience, specialty dining gets a high passing grade.

Ship Activities

There is lots to do on the ship...pools. waterslides, ropes course, mini golf, basketball etc.  I even did the ropes course this year....but only because my 8 year old daughter did and I didn't want to look like a complete wimp in front of her.  The activities are great, but it can get so crowded.  Deck chairs were a rare commodity and the pools and hot tubs were sometimes wall to wall people.  People would save upwards of 7 or 8 deck chairs, so there were a lot of empty deck chairs with towels on them.  I don't know if there is a policy on saving chairs, but if there isn't there should be and if there is, it's not enforced.

Fitness Centre:

The ship has a very nice fitness centre with lots of new equipment.  Again, it was really crowded.  I went at different times of the day to try and avoid the crowds, but it was busy there all the time.  I was still able to access the machines and get my workouts in.  There is also a side room where you can do some floor work like push-ups, sit-ups, burpees, mountain climbers etc.  I don't think people knew about the side room so it was nice and quiet in there.

VIBE

This is the adults only area that if you're lucky enough, you can buy a pass for once you're onboard.  It's really nice and it's worth the price....HOWEVER....there were lots of people in VIBE without VIBE passes.  Your card unlocks the door to Vibe, bu the card reader kept breaking.  The only other way into vibe was to walk through one of the bar areas.  There was no security and bartenders weren't checking for Vibe passes.  There are supposed to be enough deck chairs for every person with a Vibe pass, yet there were times when all the deck chairs were full and we couldn't get a deckchair.  We complained because this was something we paid extra for and after offering us chocolate covered strawberries (the universal fix for every problem on the escape), they eventaully refunded half our money back for the Vibe passes.

Entertainment:

This is an area where the Escape scores poor marks.  We liked the entertainment of the Getaway, but the entertainment paled in comparison on the Escape.  I will say that having more passengers on the Escape over the Getaway made it considerably more difficult to book shows etc.  I saw the two broadway shows After Midnight and Million Dollar Quartet.  After Midnight was a serious snoozer.  Million Dollar Quartet was ok, but  the guy who played Jerry Lee Lewis was spectacular.  Both shows catered to a 55+ audience and that was disappointing.  On the Getaway, they had Legally Blonde and that's a good show that appeals to a wider audience.  For example, I really like it and so did my 8 year old.  The comedy was so-so - certainly not as good as it was on other cruises.  Again, it was very crowded and it was hard to get into the show.  The remainder of the board entertainers were mediocre.  Dualing pianos was good, but again it was super crowded.  There was also a decent musical performer in the brew pub at night. In comparison to other cruises I've been on, the Escape gets a failing grade on Entertainment.

Disembarkation:

A TOTAL disaster.  We had early debarkation because we had a flight to catch.  They pile all the people with early debarkation on the 7th deck.  However, the waiting area is outside the elevator banks and it was so busy that you couldn't even get off the elevator on deck 7.  I mean that literally.  It was wall to wall people and there was no room to get off the elevator.  People were pushing and shoving.  I even saw a fist fight break out.  When it's finally time to get off, they take you on a crazy path that walks you through the entire 7th deck with all your luggage.  It took us nearly 45 minutes to get off once the line started to move.  It was crazy!!

Overall:

The Escape is a beautiful ship.  There is lots on the ship and lots to do.  However, the poor qualify of the service and the complimentary dining really brings the overall experience down to a sub par level.  The mediocre entertainment also makes the Escape a tough one to recommend.  The size of the common areas compared to the number of passengers seems way out of proportion and results in large crowds, long wait times and difficulty in making reservations.  The kids camp and kids activities were spectacular.  The specialty dining options were also very good, but they come with a price.  There are lots of options when it comes to a cruise and the Escape just doesn't provide the value and the experience you can find on other cruises..
