Fantastic Haven experience on the NCL Epic - Rome departure by Katmandu13

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

The Epic is very clean and all areas have an updated elegant appeal.  This itinerary was great.  I'd recommend getting on in Rome because it's nice to have the break at Sea after several days of excursions.  We talked to others that got on in Barcelona and they felt we had the better itinerary - they were exhausted.  We flew in early and spent 3 days taking nite and half day tours (we wish we had a few more days in order to visit Venice - which is the only additional place we wanted to see).  This did allow the us time to get accustomed to the time change and enjoy more sights than you would see on the full day excursions to Rome.  We opted for the Haven thermal spa suite and would definitely recommend it.  We enjoyed having our special "haven" area away from the crowds on board.  The thermal spa suites are located in the Aft of the ship near Madara spa instead of directly in the Haven area (forward) so be prepared for a walk to get to the Haven amenities.  Our room was on the 14th deck with the water slide area / rock wall above us.  We assumed that there would be noise during the day but the running and jumping noise continued throughout the entire night, every night long after the slide, rock and bars were closed.  If you are a light sleeper bring earplugs or opt for the Haven area versus the Spa area on deck 14. Otherwise the room itself and balcony were lovely and it's a convenient location!  The complimentary access to thermal spa at Madara (when you book Haven Thermal Suite) was wonderful - you just have to show your room key to the desk to gain access.  On our first day on the ship we made sure we had swimsuits and other necessities in the bag we carried on; even if your room is ready (and most are) your bags won't get to your room for several hours, you can hang out in the Haven or use the Spa.  We opted for private excursions and would highly recommend that as well if you don't like traveling with crowds or on buses.   Scott with Delta was extremely helpful making recommendations and giving me great tips on dining, shows and the ship...can't wait to start planning our next trip.

Love the ship by BdBlabgo

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

It's really hard to pick a favorite but if we had to, it would be the restaurants, except the Garden Cafe which was pretty standard fare for a cruise ship. It wasn't bad, just ordinary. There are some really good complimentary restaurants.

The service overall was terrific.

it would have been nice to have towels changed at least twice in a week.

NCL Mediterranean Cruise by blassiter

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

The best way to see all of the best port cities in the Mediterranean is by taking this cruise. The Epic was clean, the food was good and the entertainment was excellent! I would definitely do this again! Oh and the unlimited beverage package was the best part of it all!

Western Mediterranean Cruise by Nydiao

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Overall my husband and I enjoyed the cruise. Each port had its attraction, My favorites were Florence and Naples. Did all but one tour independent.  Ironically the only one that we did with NCL was the Monaco and Monte Carlo tour and it was our least favorite.  I believe it had to do with the tour guide and not enough things to see or do.  The guide wasn't passionate, he just commented without much historical context.  As another cruiser stated the NCL wasn't helpful if you didn't book the tour with them.  They had no interest in letting you know where to go. I wasn't expecting them to know anything about the tour company but to be helpful in guiding to where the independent tours were stationed and how to get to them.

Food was okay, Actually I think Carnival's food was better, definitely Carnival's dessert were better and overall Celebrity has had the best food.  We had the drink package and the upgrade restaurant.  Definitely the drink package is worth it but the upgrade to the restaurant package was just okay.  The Italian restaurant was  nothing great,  the Steakhouse was good as was the Brazilian churrascaria.

The Garden Cafe was okay, however during breakfast it was always jammed. AC isn't what we Americans are used to, it was still warm. Had to take the food and eat outside the Garden Cafe, nothing wrong and actually better (nice breeze).

Cabin room was small as expected (a bit dated) nice balcony but I didn't like that the sink was right in the room almost in front of the bed.  Good water flow for the shower.  Room had good storage for two individuals.  Bring a power strip cord, only two 120 volt receptacles and two 220 volt (European).  With todays gadgets that we all have you'll be sorry if you don't bring the power strip. Our cabin guy was great, Marlon was always asking us if we needed something when he saw us. The bar guy from Perú on the pool deck was great, (forgot his name).

Entertainment was the Best everything else was ok by gbfdavid

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

I have cruised with a number of companies and I have to say this was my least favorite.  Everything from booking the trip to getting good information scheduling flights getting on the ship planning meals entertainment all was very hard.  Over all the staff was good food was ok not the best not the worst.

I will say the shows were great.  One show I tried to book and was told they did not have the show on the ship.  A day later another guest was telling me they had plans to go to the show.  Come to find out the staff did not know what they were talking about.  Everything was extra even it cost extra to go to one of the shows and the price changed a few time from when I paid for it.  Going up of course.  After making plans to go to the show, setting a time months ahead of time the day before the show I was told they could not honor my reservation.  Even know I paid for premium seating I was told it was first come first serve who ever got there first got the best seats.  My luggage did not make the ship and so for the first 5 days I had no cloths except for what I was wearing.  I do not feel the staff made a helpful effort to get my luggage when I asked them what they were doing they told me it was not there problem it was the air line and I needed to deal with the airline.  They did wash my cloths as well as they were very happy to sell me a polo shirt for 50 dollars.

Review from PNW mom by tbos111

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

great ports and enjoyed each city. The cruise was full of Spanish people which made it very loud and chaotic at the open buffet. We thought NCL catered to North America, but these were in the minority which made the cruise somehow noisy and unorganized. People would cut in front of you with no respect to others. People were going in the hot tubs with babies and in their under wears, some others were in their clothes. The swimming pools weren't enough for the sheer number of kids, and the water color changed, not sure if it's something to do with the chlorine or the people swimming. Overall, I wouldn't except that experience on Norwegian, but rather on carnival cruises.

Excellent experience for being my first cruise. by marquito8080

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

This was my first time in a Cruise, for that everything was wonderful. There were some things that I didn't like for example the mourning breakfast that was so crowded. The cost of the internet service was exaggerated almost 30 dolars per day. The unkind personal trainer in the gym. How people who don't take the cruise tours are treated by the port agents who were rude and not polite dealing with tourists.

Great Ship, Great Trip.... Truly "EPIC" :) by chiemiw

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Freestyle dining was amazing! Loved the layout of the staterooms.

Perks received by booking through was the best deal out there.

NOTE!! Bring backup documentation of all your perks, excursions and anything you reserved in advance!  We had the Ultimate Beverage Drink package and when we got on the ship they didnt show that we had that perk. We went to the Guest Service Desk and they said not only do we have to prove we had it but that we had to wait for them to email the home office and get the perk confirmed! Super annoying to prove what shows on the NCL vacation summary!

Food was good, at best by mikeholc

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Lots of changes I did not like on this cruse.  I had only one Great meal, a 2" T-Bone.  Fish & Chips and hamburgers at O'Shannons were also highlights. Overall, the breakfast menu was outstanding overll, with the best varity of food.

I do have to comment the staff ooverll.  I have a handicap nd they helped me with assistqance thru the lines.  Entertainment was OK.  The Comedy Club had no comedian.  The best act was Circus ????

Overall the cruise was GOOD at best.  I think I will try another Cruise Line next time.Sad

Nice Hotel by drbilljones

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

This is a big ship that takes on and lets off passengers in three different cities in three different countries over the course of the 7 day cruise.  As a result, it feels more like a floating hotel than a cruise experience.  It is a nice hotel to be sure, but it just doesn't have the feel of a cruise.  The food is good, nothing really spectacular, and we always enjoyed it.  The real bright spot on this trip was the entertainment.  It was absolutely first class.  It would not have been any better in NYC or Vegas.  Very impressive.  The shore excursions were terribly overpriced.  While Naples was readily accessible from the port, Rome and Florence were 1.5 to hours away.  Subtracting the going and coming time left very little time to see everything even with a 10 hour day.  If you really want to visit these Beautiful cities, I recommend a land based tour.

A great ship! Loved the studios! by KLB1956

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

This was our third cruise on Norwegian Cruise lines. This ship, the Epic was truly that, epic! It was very large and the crew was fantastic.  The officers on board were very friendly and voluntarily made contact with the passengers on the ship. This was a first type of cruise that made three stops and pick up passengers for their week and dropped off passengers from their week.  We thought we did not like this but we found just the opposite. We did like it. There were not long lines to disembark or embark on the ship, there were not long lines for excursions. What we enjoyed most were the crew members that took care of us on our week. We will travel Norwegian Cruise lines again!

all the locations were amazing. My family enjoyed it. The only bad experience we had was with laundry service. Laundry service lost our clothes and my daughter and wife had to cope with it.

the guest service handled it very unprofessionally

Improvements by rasegg

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Juices in machines are not 100% pure juice. Several times I heard senior staff berating junior members in public within dining facilities. This needs to be done behind closed doors.

Tipping is expected but yet gratuity is added daily.

Pools are entirely too small. Spa services are terribly overpriced. ATM machines didn't work at all. Fees for internet usage is too high based on data use.

Smooth sailing in the Mediterranean...Thanks NCL! by skardina

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Although this was my 25th cruise ( most on Disney) we REALLY enjoyed the Suites that the NCL ships offer.  The HAVEN 2 bedrooms come with a butler and lots of amenities and offer a quiet retreat from a very very busy and crowed ship. As there are so many guests and 24 regular elevators, they seem to stop on every deck.  The ONLY real negative to OUR cruise was that the HAVEN private pool got a lot of children in it every day after our share excursions (I counted 11 kids in a very small pool).  Although parents must be there to supervise , they really don't and the HAVEN staff doesn't really police the situation. There was a 5 year old and a 10 year old in the jacuzzi jumping in and out and the rules state they have to at least be 12 years old.  As a Disney PLATINUM cruiser,  I am looking for a new cruise line to patronize and this is my 3rd NCL cruise--I MAY have found a new home!

Food and service first class by Cruiser50784085

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

This was my first cruise with my wife and a couple of friends. We could not fault the quality of the food and service. How they keep up that high level of service for so many people must be a logistics nightmare, but they do it and do it very well indeed. The cleanliness is also exceptional, with a compulsory squirt of hand cleanser when entering any restaurant. We had an inside cabin which was very clean and tidy, a tad small as you'd expect on a ship, but they use the space well. On a ship money buys space and we're thinking of a balcony cabin on our next cruise if we can get a good deal. A nice touch was an adults only sunbathing area to exclude kids, which was great for peace and quiet. The quality of the shows we attended were better than we expected, just as good as any West End show. To conclude, this was one of the best holidays we have ever had and would recommend a cruise, especially with Norwegian, to everyone.

Fantasic destinations! by brownmousej

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

We booked our first Med cruise for the fab destnations and were not dissapointed at all!  The bonus was the ship with 4,000+ that we thought would be a problem; however we never felt crowded. The ship was beautiful and well-maintained with an excellent, friendly staff. We looked forward to coming home after a long day of touring.

Only 2 drawbacks - ship's store not open while in French waters.

We booked a airport transfer with NCL; but still had to roll and load/unload our own luggage onto/from the transfer bus!

A Cruise, Or a Shuttle Ferry - You decide by globalista

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Epic / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

We took a 7 day trip out of BCN, as soon as we boarded we noted that staff standards were sketchy.  As the cruise progressed we understood that clients embarked and de-barked at every port, therefore there was none of that super cohesion that you get from all being together from a defined length of time.

The taste and manhattan room dining complimentary were excellent, the chinese was a joke.  The buffet was good and varied, the pools lovely, the entertainment patchy due to the roll on roll off nature of the clients - no goodbye show, no captains announcements (apart from 1).  Overall was an excellent cruise but no comparison to the party vibe of sailing the Getaway out of Miami!
