Liberty of the Seas 2/7 - 2/14/16 by ring345

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This ship just came out of drydock for improvements.  Work was incomplete, there was confusion on what activities were open.  Didn't get to go into Cayman Islands due to weather.  The food was so tasteless and so disappointing.

Liberty of the Seas - She's a Beauty! by luziana73

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was our second time on the LOTS and her first out of a $48 million dry dock.  New additions were Sabor (wonderful Mexican restaurant), water slides (had some glitches), new putt putt golf course, new cabins, and other improvements.  Embarkation was easy, as was debarkation.  We opted to take our own luggage off and we were in our car headed out within an hour of standing in line on the ship.

Just a brief synopsis:  married couple in their early 60's, this was our belated Christmas present, balcony cabin on deck 8, no excursions planned, one visit to a specialty restaurant (a bit more about that later).

Our itinerary included Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel and three sea days.  However, because of choppy seas, we were not able to tender in at Grand Cayman and had to skip the port.  Our port charges were refunded before we left the ship.  Weather was a bit nippy, but no biggie.  It was February, so we were prepared.

Jamaica's port was Falmouth and RC has built a very nice pier shopping area.  It is very clean and the shops are very nice.  However, once you step out of the exterior gate, you are in another world.  We have been here before and were aware of what to expect.  It is definitely not for everyone.  We walked around for about 30 minutes and then headed back to the pier.  It made me a tad uncomfortable.

Surprisingly, our trip to Cozumel was our favorite, although we have been here many times on cruises.  We decided to take a taxi to the downtown area ($8 one way) and did some shopping. Cozumel is my place to look for some new earrings and it did not disappoint.  We took a taxi back to the pier where Carnival docks, as some of our friends were on that cruise and we managed to easily meet them and have drinks and chips.  It was a short 10 minute walk back to our pier.

Food was to our liking at every restaurant/buffet.  No problems.

Entertainment was wonderful:  Saturday Night Fever is fabulous so don't miss it, but it may not be suitable for the very young.  The ice show was the best we have seen and the other night's entertainment was top notch.

I must say that our cruise director, Jeff Arpin, was one of the best we have encountered.  He didn't come across as a used car salesman!  He was very approachable and real.  Hope to see him again.

The captain and hotel director were also good sports and approachable.  When the water slides officially opened, they were the first two down the slides.

We had never had to use the ship's medical facility but did this time.  My husband hurt his knee in one of the games and could hardly walk.  The ship's doctor was attentive and his staff was professional.  The charges were about what we would pay in the US.  My husband was much better the next day, thank you.

Guest services was very nice to us in that we were in Jamaica for Ash Wednesday and they were able to help us find a church to attend when in port.  They even let us call the church from the desk to find out mass times.

There are only two things that concerned me.  First, some of the tv programming is definitely not suitable for youngsters.  I know many parents book an adjoining cabin for their kids and if they are channel surfing at night, they can get an earful and eyeful.  Perhaps parents can block these cabins for certain channels?  I hope so. The second thing that bothered me was the use of my on board credit.  We had quite a bit, so we booked Sabor (Mexican restaurant) before we left home.  It was not taken off of my OBC but went against my credit card.  That did not make me happy.  The restaurant was a good experience.  I recommend the spicy specialty margarita with cinnamon around the rim.

Overall a great cruise.  RC is our cruise line of choice.  We are booked on the Oasis for September!  And we are now Emerald!Big Smile

Maybe it was a fluke... by Cruiser619

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

it took 2.5 days for the maintenance people to get our AC to blow in our room. We had to keep checking with the staff to see if they had closed the ticket or what because nobody was giving us feedback... When it was finally cool , we lost hot water!  That problem was fixed after a few showers but nobody ever warned us about it or anything!  Thank goodness our room steward was keeping us in the loop or we would have been clueless AND hot!

Very poor customer service not worth what I spend by tom597

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

RCL has once again over promised and under delivered.  I booked the Preisdental Suite of this ship and the service was terrible.  It took my family 3 hours to get on the ship.  The air was not working for the first day of the cruise.  The slides and waterpark where closed for the first three days of the cruise.  I could go on and on but I am done with this company under delivering for the price I paid.  The suite lounge which for suites guests was over run with other people.  It took me 2 hours the first night just to get one drink.  This drink was not served I had to stand in line for an hour just to get it. Wasn't our best RCCL trip by RCCLfans

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

As loyal RCCL cruisers, we are used to a high level of quality on our ships.  It is the ONLY cruise line we use. This trip was sorely lacking.  The Liberty was going into dry dock for renovations. It was low on supplies (like wine varieties, certain foods and other items) and the closer we got to the end the less service we got as staff was starting to pack things away. This also meant that many of the glasses and bowls were not available for use. (On departure morning, there were not enough cereal bowls.  We were given small side dish bowls and had to make several trips.)  Lesson learned... no trips on the last cruise before a ship goes into dry dock for renovation.

Great entertainment and customer service on by melkonarik

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Everything was very good.  Customer Service in the Dining room, room attendant and bars was excellent..  Jamaica was a dangerous port and we chose not to get off.   A couple with an 8 year old son went on a beach excursion and a man offered the husband marijuana--who said no.  This person then quickly went to the 8 year old and offered to sell him some drugs.   Another couple was robbed. This ship has only one more trip before a 4 week upgrade.

Relaxing Vacation! by Cruiser973

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This is my 2nd cruise and I have booked with Royal Caribbean for both of them.  The staff aboard the Liberty of the Seas were beyond professional, kind, and helpful.  There were so many activities to do despite some rough weather at the beginning and end of the trip.

New Years Eve Cruise by EllBro

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Royal Caribbean is a quality cruise line that is well organized and has friendly, helpful employees.  The check in and check out process is quick and without incident.  The food in the Eat when you want program (Portofino restaurant) was consistently very good with super wait staff.  The performances were much better than anticipated so the shows should not be missed.  The New Years Eve party was an event!  They showed all of the key football games on the big screen by the outdoor pool so a fun a lively atmosphere.

The downside to this cruise is the excursions.  We did the jeep tour in Cozumel through Royal Caribbean which had a weak snorkeling component and a rather rushed drive around the island.

Grand Cayman is the nicest stop in my opinion but the process of a tender to land used up a good portion of the stop.  It took quite a while to get off and long lines to tender back to the ship.  We did the trip to see Stingray City which is definitely worth the trip and the snorkeling was the best of the stops.  But the net free  time on the island was rushed.

We did a personalized tour in Jamaica through Know Jamaica Tours.  Marva Shaw at Know Jamaica Tours is the owner and took great pride and personal care of the visit.  We were met by a friendly and knowledgeable member of her team easily and our driver for the day, Glenroy Johnson, was terrific-friendly, knowledgeable and eager to please.  The only issue with Jamaica at that time of year is it was so crowded and there are not a whole lot of options of what to do.  I suggest skipping the tour of the Rosehall Great House at a cost of $20 pp.  The beaches are not terrific there.  But again, I can't imagine a more professional and competent and friendly group to work with than Know Jamaica Tours.  And ask for Glenroy!

The weather is a bit tricky at that time of year also.  The last full day on board was inside all day due to bad weather and one day on departure was iffy, but once away from Galveston by a day it was gorgeous.

If you like cruises, you will like this cruise.  The convenience of driving to the port and leaving from TX is a huge plus if you can do it.  Easy parking in Galveston with a smooth and quick shuttle to the ship.

Very good overall experience by pouyamahbod

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

we enjoyed our time in the cruise, however witnessing the death of a young child was really heartbreaking. I beleive the design of the Kid pool section can be improved to avoid having a deep (1.7m) pool right next to kid pool and splash are.

Is is Quality or Quantity? that is most important? by Cruiser796

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Love a cruise!!  Over the years since the very large ships have entered the arena, it seems that the quality of the food and services in the dining areas has greatly diminished.  Many meals taste and look like they are pre-fabbed, ready to just microwave or warm to be served.  I had a completely cold meal delivered one evening.  After two attempts to get it right, finally got to eat....alone. as everyone else was already finished.  And had a middle eastern waiter who kept bringing a different meal than was ordered because it contained pork.  I kid you not!!  What is happening in the dining room service?  Just not the usual respectful and service orientated gentlemen & ladies as previous years have produced.  So what is with all the powdered ingredients to make potatoes and other parts of our dinners?  Vegas were only thing that felt authentic, fresh food.  Also noticed the really great deserts are no longer even served as before on other cruises. So the food was very disappointing in the luncheon and dinners, sit down restaurants.  We thought the buffet was many times a greater choice than the sit down dinners.

Mostly pros/ some improvements by justjoyce1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We have taken 2 other Christmas cruises and we truly enjoy them. This is a great way to spend time with the family. The Liberty of the Seas is a great ship. We  enjoyed the flo-rider, the Promenade deck designed like a small street, and  the outstanding nightly shows. Our favorites were the flying and the skating.

We had impeccable service-

the deserts disappointing-

Better communication needed about tours etc. The next day activity sheet came  too late to be helpful. The week's overview posted a week before the cruise on the internet, including the shows, special activities ( 60's, 50's night, # formal nights, which most formal,  etc.) would help families plan on- ship activities ahead and help in packing.,

The internet was the worst ever!! You paid a lot for slow, spotty service that was useless . NO on staff person to help at the computer station and no refunds

Overall- wonderful vacation  .

Christmas Vacation by dhowell97

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I thoroughly loved the cruise as did my family.  The food was great, the room attendants did a great job, the waiters and servers were very polite and professional.  However, the boarding process was horrendous as was the deboarding process.  So the first and last things I remember about the cruise were negatives.

liberty december 2015 by stone0302

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Ship was beautiful. On and off easy.  Waiter was great and his assistant.  Jude and Maria.  Food was the worst I had ever had on a cruise ship.  Identical breakfast every day.  Dining room was really bad.  Carnival has them beat hands down on food.  No chocolate lava cake ever!  Soft serve ice cream was only yogurt and only available a few hours a day.  Entertainment in dining room only last two nights.  We loved deck 5 with shops and pizza/coffee shop.  We love karaoke and only available 3 nights and didn't start til 10.  Split our family of 10 up into 3 different dining areas - not even the same restaurant.  We booked 9 months in advance and were promised seats together.

Saturday NIght Fever show was awesome!   Singer was great.  Vantriliquist ok.  Comedian lacking  No comedy shows in the evenings like we have experienced before.

First Western Carribean Cruise by jeansc

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Traveling with adult family members, we shared dinner every night. Everyone was able to find things to do during the day for both "at sea" and shore days including excursions, entertainment on board and plenty of food and drink. Even on the rainy day, we still had fun!!!

Loved the Champagne Bar with bartenders Raj and Melvin. Reminded us of "Cheers" where everyone knew your name. Both were very accommodating.

The Promenade was the center of indoor activity on the ship. Deck 11 offered lots of water and sun fun.

Don't miss Deck 14 Olive or Twist. We liked it during the day. A great place to chill out from the tropical sun and what views!

Love

Will not cruise on Royal Caribbean again by jodyterrell

OK experience, but this is my last. This web site is frustrating, I don't have any more to tell, but wont let me submit unless I have 150 words.  Norwegian so far out of our four cruises is the overall best.

Boat wasn't my favorite, the Dining and Staff were excellent though! by yukneeverse

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Liberty of the Seas / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Enjoyed my trip, the best part was the dining and the staff members. The ship felt old and grungy at times, and the decorum was out of whack, did not look or match like other boats I had been on. I know that the boat has tourists and I feel that it is too americanized or still aims too much to consumerism and not enough on adventure and freedom. I didn't feel relaxed in the promenade, I could have just ran through a busy mall to get that experience. I want to feel like pushed and prodded to buy buy buy - and staying away from certain stores made me feel like I had a vacation. The ports are also just fashioned to look like a "different" place that is exotic, but you don't really get to experience the real cultures and attitudes of the people. It is la-la-land inside the port shopping and this gives less time for those who really need to go out and visit the cities and the cultures - which is what I feel a lot of people want to do, but you really can't.
