Unfortunately, there were a lot of problems with the ship from engine failure which caused the ship to limp at half speed and had several port changes as a result which was disappointing. Also, there were plumbing problems. It was a very old crowd. There was not a lot to do on the ship and with the cold weather, couldn't use the pool or lay out on deck plus most of the on-deck activities were down or not useable due to the weather. Overall, it was ok. I wouldn't do an Alaska cruise again for another 10 or 15 years since I prefer the sun and beach plus the newer ships are a lot nicer. The cruise industry should build ships specifically for cold weather tours instead of using a ship designed for hot weather in cold weather environments.
Embarkation
4 out of 5
A little disorganized with long, misrouted lines outside the cruise port. Need signs or guidance.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
5 out of 5
The main dining room food was very good and drink prices and quality were reasonable. The buffet could use improvement. Quality of food, even for breakfast was not great. Good variety but quality was not as good as other cruises.
Onboard Activities
2 out of 5
There's not much to do on the ship. It was an Alaska cruise and was cold and rainy outside. The pool was cold and the few hot tubs that were open were warm, not hot, plus they're very small. The shows and presentations were good but other than that there was not much to do.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
Shows and presentations were good. Good variety of musicians.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
Staff was overall good but it seemed like many were new and not 100% up to speed.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
Ship was clean but overall it does not compare to the newer ships. Nice but not great.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
The ship had many problems I guess since it was the first sailing since the COVID lockdown started. We had to switch rooms due to the toilet not working and many people had similar problems. Overall the room was comfortable with a nice, large TV. The shower was a little small but typical for ships of this class. The Medallion electronic system is slick in that it unlocks the cabin door upon approach.
Ship tip
If going to Alaska, bring a book, binoculars and warm clothes.
Disembarkation was ok. We took our own luggage off. Seems like people do not follow instructions since we were supposed to be with the first group off the ship but there were already a ton of people lined up at the door when our group was released from the holding area. Need better control.
