It was a fine ship with very interesting places. by Adriatico

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

It was a great cruise, with a medium ship, I don’t like the biggest... The food was diversified, well made with a lot of seafood. All the teams made his best The soectacles was fine.

South America amazing by BrianCruiser

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Worldwide

Cruise was amazing. Had everything I needed on board but the highlights were definitely the places we stopped. Stumbled upon a facebook profile Costaluminosa Date and hooked up with a chef :) Would definitely book costa again. No hiccups. Everything went to plan. Excursions were a bit more expensive booking via costa but I guess its convenient. Sad its over. Next time I'll book a longer tour.

Amazing itienary on an Italian budget line by CruiseShipLuver

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa

An amazing itienary with a lackluster ship. It is an Italian budget cruise line so we knew what to expect. But the lack of Italian flair when it comes to food was admittedly dissapointing.

This was our 9th cruise... by Bess211012

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Luminosa

This was our 9th cruise with Costa, this time on Luminosa. For us, the experience is very youthful in approach, which we do like even though we are in our 50s/60s. Our outside cabin was kept in very good order. I've noticed about other comments regarding only 1 service per day, but this is enough. Once a day is sufficient especially if that once is done properly. The food is regular at breakfast and does vary at lunch. Evening dinner does have great variety, especially if you like seafood dishes. There are plenty of bars, and I noticed the more courteous that guests were they probably got a better service on return. We always say please and thank you, and we know the staff appreciate that. It costs nothing in any language! The itinerary gave us many new ports and we took an excursion in Athens and katakolon. As newly promoted pearl members of Costa club, we saw the extra benefits as worthwhile keeping for the future. €20 spend, samsara restaurant for 1 night gratis and the prosecco and a gift included in the room. 5 times on Favolosa, 1 time now each on Diadema, Serena, Pacifica and now Luminosa. Roll on Fortuna in March.

We were around 60 persons... by yashoda

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Luminosa

We were around 60 persons travelling together. This was second cruise with Costa. Food was repetitive especially for breakfast & lunch. Dinner time was stressful.. when ordered food at 6:30pm it was served around 8pm & we had to vacate by 8:30pm. At deck9 not enough space for all to sit & eat. Was charged Euro 70 per person for room service but cleaned only once a day. Group dances for guests seems to be limited..

Beautiful ship with many extra... by katiecosta

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Luminosa

Beautiful ship with many extra features. Shows in the theater are great and unique.Food is okay. Steady ship on the sea and also very clean. Crew members are all really nice and friendly. New drink packages like brindiamo and giovani are great because your drinks are unlimited. For what is inside of packages look in the photo section for costa Luminosa on this app.

There are no extras in... by Ahoyo

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Luminosa

There are no extras in your room just a bar of soap and shower gel. Take your own shampoo, conditioner and body gels. No shower caps, cotton wool or cotton wool buds. You can ask for body lotion but it doesnt come. Take an empty water bottle with you so you can take water to your room easily, they do not give you water by the bottle, it is only by the glass and they are clever by decanting plastic bottles into heavy bottles that you cannot be removed from the restaurant. If you have a drinks package bottled water isn't included. You still have to pay for water by the bottle unless you have a bottled water package. There is no food between 10:30 and 12:00 and 3:00 and 16:00 and 17:00 and18:30. The buffet provides only continental breakfasts, breads cold meats, cheeses and pastries, yoghurts, cereal. No eggs, nothing warm. Warm food is only served in the dining restaurant, it is served, takes ages and very cramped. Tips are 10 euros a day and compulsory unlike other cruise lines this is non negotiable. We had a good trip but wouldn't go Costa again they seem too bad enjoy pinch and use every opportunity to make extra money. Hope this helps.

Better then I thought.. Not as good as it could be.. by pamparker31

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

After reading a lot of bad reviews  on poor service , I was sceptic to go but the employees on the boat were all very nice.. Very accommodating,  and all spoke good English. The cruise passengers I would say were mostly Italians so they were in large groups with little English. The Shows were ok, nothing to write home about , The age group was mostly Older , My 4 kids (18-26) complained their was NO ONE on the ship in their age group & for the most part they were right. The Food needs work.. They definitely need a new chef with food that not only looks good but taste good. That was probably the Biggest complaint , it was bad no matter what you tried. They do have a few up charge restaurants which we would have gladly done but there was no menu anywhere to see what they had. The Excursion to Russia (2 day tour) was wonderful. I highly recommend it! Other ports we went to were good, Finland (not much to see) Estonia cute little Medieval town ,Sweden lots of sightseeing & restaurants , But Russia was the BEST! If you like to drink get the drink package, We did the Brindamo package and basically you can get any mixed drink beer or wine or soda .. Sounds expensive but when you break it down its really not that bad. Cabin's were larger then I imagined and although we had an inside one you never felt cramped. Really bad trash smell a few cabins down & although I kept asking why they kept saying it was an air conditioner leak ( smelt more like an overflow toilet:( but thank God only smelt it every time you passed by instead of in my cabin too. To summarize.. We wanted to go to those ports, their was no there ship going , we had no choice, It was fun, we accomplished what we went to do, but better food would have made it a lot better cruise.. If you ate at the Buffet, breakfast was always pastries & ham & cheese. Hours for breakfast in dining room should be later then 930.. People get sick of same buffet everyday.

Pay for water?? by Itllcostya

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Europe - Western Europe

If you want water at dinner, be prepared to be charged 3.95 euros PLUS 15% "service charge".  Likewise, you have to buy ping pong balls to play.  There is no evening buffet so if you don't like what's on the menu or don't want to dress on "formal" nights, there's little alternative.  Three shore excursions were cancelled due to lack of people requesting english speaking guides.  Food was mediocre at best and couldn't compare to food offered on recent cruises taken on Holland-America or Royal Caribbean.  Line staff was superb.  Wait staff was extremely competent.  No passenger accessible laundry was horrid. Outrageous prices for washing laundry by ship personnel.

Was my second time with... by LWLillie

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Luminosa

Was my second time with Costa and what a difference from my first one. We were few of the passengers that spoke English so they sat us down with other passengers that knew English also. Mind you, I didn't care but never happened to me before. It was fate bc then the 8 of us would hang out the whole trip and we had a blast!! But, the other passengers were kind of rude. And they would push you! Elderly ppl too! The food was good but we had the same buffet breakfast for 10 days! I don't think I would do Costa again.. Mixed feelings...

Last Cruise I'll Ever Take on Costa by jrchurc

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Transatlantic

Costa Luminosa trans-Atlantic Dec 2 - 20, 2014.  A very disappointing cruise.  Before the cruise we understood the drink packages were confusing and that was true.  Water was not available in the dining room unless you bought a water package or brought your own bottle that you may have been able to fill during the breakfast or lunch hours at the buffet.  Also cocktails or specialty coffee drinks were not available in the dining room even if you had purchased the  drink package.  Passengers had to obtain the drink or coffee at one of the available bars.  So the evening meal had passengers  carrying their own bottles or glasses which can be difficult while cruising, and the dining room became more of a buffet looking experience rather than a place to be waited on. For the most part the food was below expectations and the service was very slow.  Often the entertainment in the dining room happened before the entrees arrived.  The most memorable part of the entire time was the lines.  Two hours for embarkation and 3 hours for disembarkation is excessive.  Every port stop also had lines even at the quay side ports.  Watching the staff stopping reembarking passengers while crew disembarked, or stopping the entire process to watch passengers with disabilities struggling up or down gangways with no help from Costa was very disturbing.  If there were any service issues, Costa staff was not interested in resolving them. It took a service manager to do any correction.  It got very old to hear "not our policy" from the staff.  I also noticed a lack of concern or interest in any issues raised by an American on this cruise.  The bias of the staff was very evident during  the 3 hour disembarkation.  When you purchase suite accommodations, an expectation of service goes with it.  Costa did not deliver.  We had a cruise on Costa Magica in 2006 will no issues, and have traveled on 40+ cruises by Carnival, NCL, RCCL, Oceania, Viking and Uniworld lines.  We will never cruise  Costa again.

Never Again by nsanan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Caribbean

The overall appearance of ths ship was nice. However that is forgotten when the you deal with the ship's crew/staff. IT seamed like we were a inconvenince to them. An exmaple being that we had booked shore excursions and did not get the tickets, late that night we went to the shore desk to ask and were treated rudly, like it was out fault that we did not get the tickets-- when she found them, she threw them at us. Getting a drink on board (we had the package) was next to impossilbe--again we were bothering them when we asked for something. Forget about getting water-- and the food was just terrible. No food option after 6pm other than assigned seating or pay extra for the same bad food in a specialty restaurant.

Taxing and Frustrating by polverbp285

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

Tours were cancelled without notification even though we booked and paid prior to the cruise. The tour office was closed early and we had to demand that customer service have someone from the tour office meet us so we could get on another tour. Very poor customer relations. No water was served with dinner. You need to purchase a drink package. This is unacceptable. For coffee you got a package of instant coffee and a cup of hot water.

Ship was nice, service was stellar and the itinerary was amazing. The cost was very reasonable. The food, boat and amenities were well worth the expense. Great value.

Crew too tired by bigdog

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

The passenger to crew ratio is thin and the result is a lethargic crew often too tired to say "good morning"..they talked to us about their 10-12 hour days and infrequent days off and that explained their low energy and general lack of enthusiasm. Compare to Norwegian Jade's crew of constantly smiling, helpful welcoming ...even turing the hand sanitizer into fun...

Other minor issues are easy to fix - seperate the egg omelette station to free up the breakfast line or better still, use more than two burners for the entire breakfast line...Have servers bring coffee and drinks to tables to cut down on passenger traffic through the dining area...re-edit the ship's daily news so the English version actually makes sense and gives accurate info...

Our balcony room was very good - spacious and clean although getting extra towels was a chore.

By cruisind at full speed, this ship could spend less time at sea, more time in port...Copenhagen to Helsinki took 40 hours?

Not up to expectations by llorracj

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Luminosa / Destination: Caribbean

Our cabin was much nicer than expected considering the price we paid. A vast majority of the staff were helpful and friendly. The main reason for the two star rating was the quality of the food. My wife and I lived in Europe for almost 30 years and can state categorically the food served on the Costa Luminosa does not compare favorably with a good European (or Itailian) restaurant. The best comparison I can make is airline food served in economy class on an international flight. If the food had been up to standard I would have give this cruise a four star rating.
