Alaska Cruise by cliftonschodt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

It was a beautiful cruise but we did have problems on our way to Victoria

Canada.About two hours from Victoria while we were having dinner the

ship made a loud noise and then it rolled to one side and every thing started crashing. Everyone started running and screaming and then it rolled again

and more crashing. We were only scheduled for a short stay and we were over

two hours late. We didn't get to see Victoria. Bad experience.

Ship almost flipped over by circlehboers

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Let me just start by saying Alaska is beautiful. You will see some of the most beautiful, amazing country that you have ever seen. Skagway and Juneau are incredible.they have a postcard feel and are not short on beautiful scenery. Tracy Arm Fjord is cold but the glaciers true beauty is difficult to capture in pictures. Ketchikan is a different story. It was dirty and smelled of old urine. This would be a good stop to schedule an excursion, we did not since we had in Skagway and Juneau. The cruise was mediocre at best. The decor of the cabin was very outdated. This was our first time to cruise and we didn't know to ask where you were on the boat. It makes a difference. Also the gratuities are added to everything you buy, EVERYTHING!  The alcohol is over priced. The food on the buffet was lukewarm at best. The food in the dining room was very good and the service was top notch. The housekeeper for our room was excellent as well. While cruising to Victoria the ship had a failure of the azipod compulsion system which almost caused the boat to tip over. We were in the dinning room on the 9th floor when it happened and dishes, food, chairs and people were flying everywhere. It took the captain and the ship director a very long time to announce what was happening or even that everything would be okay. They did not send staff around to check on people it was a total mess. They also charge you $12 a day per person on top of all the other gratuity. We left the ship with over $800 in charges. This was an expensive trip. I am glad we had the extra $$$. Since this was our first cruise it will be a long while before we get back on a ship, if we do it wouldn't be carnival.

Review of experience by ginakayt

Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Enjoyed the cruise overall, until the ship had a malfunction that caused the ship to tilt extremely. It was a very scary and chaotic moment. It took a long moment before the captain to explain what happened on the speaker. There was not a plan of action explained to us. There was no apologies and no reassurance on the safety of the passengers. This was my first cruise and this incident left me very uneasy to ever take another. If I ever decide to take another, it probably will not be through carnival, because of the lack in reassuring the passengers after the event.

Very disappointing. Ship almost tipped over. No apologies. by gemma16

Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We have cruised a lot and generally always have a good time. However, this was a very disappointing cruise. Let's start out with a positive:  The kids had a GREAT TIME at Camp Carnival. They wanted to be there all the time. However, was it because the camp was really fun or because it was too cold to swim in the salt water pool (even though it had a cover) and there was nothing else for them to do outside of hte camp? Don't know.  The time at each port was very limited. Cruising through the Tracy Arm fjord was kind of like being on Lake Champlain in Vermont which is beautiful but is not the classic Alaska one is hoping for. No major glaciers. No major sightings. Lots of time standing in the rain with binoculars. We spent just as much time at sea as we did in each port in total. Going to Ketchikan was kind of pointless as we had only a few hours there. Not enough time to actually leave area to explore Alaska.  We did do a great shore excurion in Juneau for whale watch (definitely recommend the Gastineau Tours!) but because our shore time was so short and we had to be back on board at 12.30pm, we almost missed boat (yes, they couldn't leave without us but it tells you how short a shore stop it was).  Victoria was only going to be a few hours as well and the Victoria hours were scheduled to be evening hours anyway which is when everything is closed and the city is dark. What's the point? On top of that we had propeller issues just outside of Victoria which caused the ship to tip dangerously (did you see it on the news?), delayed our entry into Victoria which meant we had time to get off the ship, have a quick bite to eat at a late night restaurant near dock and then be back on ship within about 90 minutes. Totally pointless. I would have rather skipped Ketchikan and had an entire day in Victoria or vice versa.  Basically this cruise is great if you like to shop at sea, drink, be in the casino or eating/drinking 24/7.  Not much else for those of us who are actually on a cruise to go to the destinations. The onboard activities were really limited.  On a Caribbean cruise, one can lie out on deck in the sunshine for all of the time one is at sea. That isn't possible on this cruise because Alaska is so rainy during hte summer.  There was very little planned for people to do on the cruise while at sea that didn't involve a jewelry sale or alcohol sale or being in spa with terribly rude ladies (one actually told me I was "chubby" in order to sell me some cellulite body oil. Yes, I am chubby but did she really need to make that observation in front of everyone?). I hate to say it but we were actually bored and wishing we could just get off a day early.  That has never happened in all of our years of cruising. However, we got a lot of naps in our cabin. The food was OK. Had a few good dishes in the dining room but the buffet food was as one would expect. Drinks were OK but at some of the bars, the bartenders didn't know how to make some of the mixed drinks offered on the menu such as a Sidecar. It really seemed like a lot of the staff were just "phoning it in" as it was the last Alaska cruise of the season and the ship was on its way to Hawaii.  The room service staff were great, though, and our cabin steward was wonderful, especially when there was panic and water everywhere when the ship tipped dangerously and the pool overflowed to lower decks. He was the only one who offered information initially and calmed us.  So....will I take a Carnival cruise again?  I doubt it. I think we're done with the whole "big ship" cruise experience for now. This was definitely not worth the cost.  Next time I want to go to Alaska, I'm just going to go to one of hte cities/towns and explore from there. This is not the way to see Alaska.

We had a great first cruise and would definitely take another by scaruso

There was so much going on on the ship and so many things to see, we thought we were going to have down time, but rarely took any.  Then realized we could 'choose to do nothing' and that was fun too.

The food was great, We ate in the formal dining room all but one night and enjoyed our tablemates and made good friendships in the process.

Our adventure was topped when the ship had a malfunction that caused it to turn suddenly at 90 degrees.  Talk about getting your adrenaline going. . . but in reality it was no worse than hitting an air pocket on a flight.  Over all a wonderful trip.Big Smile

The obstructed view was very obstructed, a lot more than we were lead to believe. I would never do that again.  The incident with the cruise ship having a propulsion problem that caused it to tilt was unsettling.  Overall, though it was a decent cruise but I do have reservations about Carnival in the future.

Cruise was excellent!  Enjoyed the ports of call and entertainment on the cruise.  The only problem was on the final day before getting to Victoria was when the cruise listed.  That was the scariest experience I have ever had on a cruise ship and hope to never experience again.  HappySurprised

Alaska Cruise by thall6305

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Scenery was breathtaking. Always wanted to see Alaska. The four stops included, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and BC. I booked several excursions thru and saved approx. 30% over Carnivals prices. The food was outstanding and had a great selection on the dining menu. My only concern is that we did not spend enough time in Juneau, Ketchikan or BC. We spent 14 hours in Skagway. This should have been cut to 8 with the other hours spent in other ports. Only 6 hours in Ketchikan and 4 in BC.

There were plenty of senior citizens on board and seemed to have no clue when holding up the lunch buffet when looking at 5 different pcs of chicken before deciding which one to take-UGH!! They also had no problem when walking thru the aisles and then decided to stop and have a conversation blocking the aisles. The support staff was amazing and very friendly and willing to help at all times. Even though my wife and I are in our mid 60's a lot of cruisers are in power chairs and oxygen which slow up everyone and then spend all their free time in smoking areas. Would I take another cruise- absolutely not! too many people moving like turtles and more like adult and kid daycare.

Amazing Trip of a Lifetime by amyrobertson

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

If you only have the opportunity to take one cruise (or one more) in your lifetime, take the cruise to to Alaska.  From majestic sunrise to sunset, the beauty of Alaska is impossible to describe with mere words.  Even through the lens of a camera, it is difficult to capture the awesome views the eye can see.  The towns of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia were quaint and had so much to do.  Whales, bears, eagles and Salmon were just a few of the amazing wildlife we were honored to see.  As always, Carnival's service was exemplary.  The $$$$ value cannot be found in any other cruise.

this was our first cruise! we chose the right one. very relaxing no stress and the legend lives up to it's name. the staff were more than attentive when needed, addressed you on the decks. met a lot of people from everywhere and even from home. we decided on only one excursion during the entire cruise and choose correctly with the ultimate Yukon experience.  already planning another and we haven't even been home a week would recommend carnival cruise line to every one very relaxed atmosphere didn't want for anything.  And the towel animals were all given a name

Good First Cruise by sdmacdonald1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We really enjoyed our first cruise. I do wish there was a bit more to do related to the area that we were cruising. Michelle, the naturalist on our ship, did a fantastic job with her two or three talks she gave about Alaska, but I wish there had been more stuff like that and less things like hairy chest contests and karaoke. I don't think it needs to be either/or, just more stuff to do that's more intellectual would be nice. They don't even need to be done "live" to be effective. I would gladly have watched some pre-recorded talks on the Carnival TV channel. That channel had a lot of repeated content as it was, most of it uninteresting to us (the port of call shopping ads least of all) and it could benefit from some additional information about the history, culture and locale of the area we cruised.  I don't know if I missed it when we booked, but my wife and I were surprised when our table at dinner (a booth) was shared with another couple. The couple turned out to be really nice, but we didn't really have any warning that that would happen. It would be nice if we could specify that we would like to eat alone. It takes a lot of effort to make three hours of conversation with strangers every night. If we had been at a table of 8-10 it would have been easier, but forcing us to sit with people we didn't know and the politics of socializing requiring us to talk to them the entire time was a bit much. I know now we can do the "anytime dining" to alleviate this problem, but we didn't know it beforehand. It turned out to not be a big deal, but we both were surprised and if we cruise again, we will keep in mind that we'd prefer to eat alone.

We did have a great time on the cruise. Our excursions were all fantastic and we enjoyed them all very much. It is obvious that Carnival puts a lot of effort into making things run as smoothly as possible. I hope that all the crew and staff are well rewarded for making the cruise experience as easy as it all was. Our cruise director, Jamie Dee, did a great job keeping us informed about the ship's activities; I'm not sure she ever sleeps. Our waiters at dining were really fun and hospitable (I Nengah, Francis and Gunawan), and our housekeeper(s) (Ramon) were funny and thorough.

Would not do it again by melandy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

First  The Carnival Legend just did not have the excitement of other cruise ships we had been on.  Needs to be updated 3 of the [ports are great but the last port Victoria B.C. arriving in the evening was just a waste of time would have been better spent in Ketchikan than stopping in Victoria.  Was not impressed with the Carnival Legend would not sail it again.

Good Cruise by doplatt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Cruise was good but Boat and room was hot.Enjoyed the Casio. The bus and train ride in Skagway was long but enjoyed stopping a Caribou Crossing and playing with the puppies. Tracy's crab shack in Juneau was awesome. We really enjoyed the Carriage ride in Victoria. only thing I would change would be less time in Skagway and more time in other ports.

Wonderful Alaska and Carnival a great fit by popblizz45

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Views were great saw hundreds of Whale's along the way. Ship and crew were fabulous. Food was excellent. The weather could not have been better. Only problem was the pools were not warm and the hot tubes were filled with very young children ages 3 through 7. I asked!!. No supervision and no pool butlers or security to stop them from driving, jumping kicking and of course screaming. But they had a great time so I guess all is well that ends well.

Again thanks for a wonderful cruise.

Amazing experience! by Cruiser41197423

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Carnival Legend / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

This cruise was truly incredible!  Alaska, the final frontier has been on my bucket list for years!  We chose to cruise, so that we could relax and not worry about driving, finding hotel accommodations and worrying about food and restaurants.   We had a large family and friends group of 19 and there was something for everyone aboard our ship from ages 3-76, everyone had a blast!  The food was superb, staff was friendly and and helpful, our cabin was perfect, and our experience in Alaska was all that we could have imagined!
