Review summary

Enjoyed the cruise overall, until the ship had a malfunction that caused the ship to tilt extremely. It was a very scary and chaotic moment. It took a long moment before the captain to explain what happened on the speaker. There was not a plan of action explained to us. There was no apologies and no reassurance on the safety of the passengers. This was my first cruise and this incident left me very uneasy to ever take another. If I ever decide to take another, it probably will not be through carnival, because of the lack in reassuring the passengers after the event.

Scifiguy, lol

I wasn't on the ship and I read it was only an 8 degree listing. But it was enough that it was spilling pool water down onto people's balconies below. So yes I'm sure something like that would be very traumatic, not knowing if the ship was going to go ahead and roll over or not

Scifiguy, royal has has its share of problems too. Listing, loss of propulsion, storms, fires, noro virus outbreaks, hit other ships. Every cruise line has a long list of accidents. I found a website cruiseminus.com that lists incidents by ship and line. You see both carnival and royal have a good sized list, it just comes with the shipping/cruising territory. I am just happy major disasters are rare in cruising industry.

I am not sure how this carnival got into my Royal Caribbean.

dolphindeb    8 years ago

scifiguy with all due respect, I am a bit confused why you are posting on a Carnival forum when you clearly don't like Carnival ?

scifiguy1956    8 years ago

It seems to me that carnival has the most problems with there ships and if I am not mistaken the Costa Concordia is owned by carnival. I have been on many cruises with Royal Caribbean and never had a problem.

I was on this cruise, it was a scary experience, it won't stop me from cruising again on any cruise ship. This was my 10th cruise and looking forward to book the next one.

I have PTSD now, only another cruise can fix it.

Hi ginakayt I am happy to hear that you will probably try Carnival again and I hope you will get to love cruising with them like most of us do.

ginakayt    8 years ago

Thanks, for the positive replies to my review. I would probably try carnival again. This was my first cruise and thought it had great service, just did not enjoy the malfunction. I totally understand that this could happen on any cruise line, and did not think this could only happen on Carnival.

I agree with shortcake, been on 13 Carnival cruises an our next in Feb, never had a problem or complaint, stop bothering the shipmates that want to have fun 🙋

^^^traumatic^^^ I'm willing to bet $1 bazillion dollars you have not earned the right to say that.

Hi, I was on this ship. it was a very traumatic experience and am so grateful we had an experienced captain to pull us out of this very possible tragic event. The whole event only lasted less than 30 seconds and the captain announced right away the problem and that we were safe. This is my 6th Carnival cruise and will continue to cruise with them. Thank you Captain Gazzano!

From what I read the azipod failed. I guess it was pointing in the wrong direction and thrusting which caused the tilt. Like mentioned above this can happen to any ship with azipods and many brands use them. I guess the captain was difficult to understand as English is probably not his first language, but the cruise director repeated everything he said so they could understand. While I am sure this is scary I don't know how much more any cruise line could do, they had a malfunction and fixed it as quickly as possible, then let everyone know what happened. There was nothing more to do its not like the passengers could do anything after it was over. I feel bad for thoes on the cruise because I am sure they were shaken up, I hope it won't stop them from cruising again.

I can understand people being freaked out while there was no direction, especially if you're familiar with how Costa Concordia handled their accident.

I love carnival! Been on other cruise lines, but carnival is still my favorite.

kenny007    8 years ago

That would have been fun. What you moaning about?

jallaway    8 years ago

This is also on the Cruise Law News site and someone has already added it to the ship's Wikipedia page.

delwynwoods    8 years ago

I don't think it's the fact that the incident happened that they are looking at changing lines it's how it was handled. Customer service is s huge thing that makes for a good holiday.

Batch123, your so right.

batch123    8 years ago

^^^ That makes perfect sense. Because the ships are all engineered the same way. Because their built in the same ship yards. Because their staffed the same way. Because you missed or ignored the fact that the same exact thing has happened on Royal. Because Royal had a huge ship fire a few years back. The point is, anything can happen anytime, anywhere. What an idiott.

scifiguy1956    8 years ago

Never cruise carnival always go Royal Caribbean
