I would HIGHLY recommend booking the shore excursions directly with Carnival. On our Progresso day to the Mayan Ruins our bus got back to the boat with 15 minutes to spare before the boat was scheduled to leave - if we wouldn't have been on a Carnival booked shore excursion I would have been worried
If you have an allergy to lines, as I do, avoid the buffet and have breakfast in the MDR. In fact, if you have an allergy to lines avoid the Lido Deck altogether. Nothing served there is worth standing in line. Next longest line (other than for food) is at Guest Services. Hhhmm. Wonder why?
Playa Corona in Cozumel was a great practically private beach area had a wonderful masseuse giving 35 minutes full body massage for only $40! Progreso had dozens of massage opportunities beachside even cheaper but I didn't try them...most looked clean and nice enough so I might try next trip.
If there is something you want to do on the ship, be sure you have made a list of the times & places of what's going on & get detailed deck plans of the ship so you find where you're going because staff just points if you ask & you end up in the wrong place or missing out on what you want to do!
Elation lacks a selection of for-fee specialty restaurants. If you want a unique dining experience shell out for CHEF'S TABLE. Sign up as soon as you board. It's a limited-seating custom-designed five-course meal with kitchen tour, champagne reception, unlimited drinks, entertainment, free photo.
For Carnival cruise lines consider purchasing the FTTF, faster to the fun, option if you do not already have the perks of a faster embark/disembark. It really makes things go much smoother.
It's less expensive to buy a soda or a drink occasionally rather than buying their "unlimited" drinks if you prefer water or juice or milk. You can get all the water & juice you want in the buffet if you are not a big soda or alcohol consumer.
If you're an adult over 21, definitely make your way to the Serenity deck and spend some time in the hot tubs! We went at night a couple times and it was really calm and relaxing.
Go to the dining rooms! We met great people and had a lot of fun.
Be wary of the excursions. They can cost a lot and you don't always know how much of a bus ride you might be taking and many times you can find alternatives for doing the same excursions for much, much less. Might also want to wait until the weather to see what makes sense for you.
