PROS: Great staff, knowledgeable and experienced crew. awesome entertainment, safe, clean, price value.
CONS: Be prepared for additional upcharges.. Better dinning options at an upcharge, cheap quality alcoholic drinks at a premium pice, really bad upcharg internet--I'm talking worse than dial-up!
We did not book any excursions through NCL, as they could be 3-10 the cost of regular excursions. We mostly did DIY or chance it to get the bus tours outside of the gates. These outside buses and cabs are not scary mafia, no insurance bandits because they also want to have good reviews.
If you love hanging out at the pool be sure you get there early because there is only ONE pool on the ship which is very disheartening because we were never able to hang out - no seats available. There are 4 hot tubs and not 4 pools. The advertisement was misleading.
Tip: if you are sailing on the ship, avoid aft rooms on the 8th floor (right above the Spinaker Lounge) so if you are in your stateroom earlier during the night you will be awake until the party is over.
There is a hair dryer, soap and shampoo. There is under bed storage. Bring half the clothes and a bar of Zote soap to save space. I washed my clothes and let them dry on the line in the shower or out on the balcony. If you eat at the restaurants, book them the first day. They fill up fast.
If you're going on the current itinerary take ship excursions to see as much of Mykonos, Corfu and drubovnik as possible. They don't have full days there because it's high season.
Wait until the kids are at least in their teens before taking them on a international cruise with NCL Star. OR look for NCL ships that have the rock climbing, ropes courses, larger pool areas, etc...
Though Ginza is complimentary, they do take reservations which we did not realize until the last night when we tried to dine there one last time and it was booked full. :( Be sure to reserve there if you want a sure chance, especially on the last couple of nights. Also, if you want to try the Teppanyaki grill, reserve it as soon as you can. Each reservation time slot can only accommodate 12 people at a time.
Also, if the lido deck is too crowded, a great place to get some sun is the large deck at the back that also serves as the helicopter pad.
As far as the cabin goes, I'd definitely recommend Jovi's section, but maybe not if you want complete silence in the evening. It's a toss-up for me because he was that good.
I would look at some other cruise lines. Even with the drink package they buckle and dime you on bottles of water, drinks that were not even top shelf. It would be like an additional 2.00 but they would clearly tell you in front of everyone this is not part of your package.
