Great first cruise by LanceL1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was my first cruise. I have always avoided them and opted for villa and condo rentals after flying to a vacation spot. This trip we decided to take our kindergarten daughter and a cruise seemed right. I loved not having to cook, do laundry, shop, etc. I didn't love the crowds. I thought the staff was very friendly. Every now and then there was a language barrier. It wasn't that we couldn't communicate, but the nuances were lost. It didn't bother me at all, and at times it was endearing. My only advice is to avoid doing too much in Roatan. One of the passengers on the boat died when her zip line broke. She had two small children and her husband on the cruise with her. Also, several people didn't make it back on the boat from the Roatan stop. I don't know what happened to them

The ship was clean and the help seemed to be pleasant enough It seemed like you were being nickel and dimed to death every were you turned. I think the itinerary was poor a couple of places I do not know why they even stopped there

not the best cruise by ColleenA3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship was obviously older by the decor. What I disliked the most was constantly being sold tear off tickets before every event. The choice of beverages was minimal. Being charged for other beverages, and I don;t mean alcohol. I would have liked a lemonaide or Sprite. Nothing was free, no welcome drink or evening cocktail party. We would have rather paid a little more up front than being nickled and dimed, everytime we wanted something. No midnight dessert fan fair the last evening.

Disappointing Cruise by HelenP

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We recentrly sailed on the Norwegian Spirit visiting the several Central American ports. The ports of call were wonderful but the ship was not. We had an outside cabin and it was not made clear to us that it would have a porthole instead of a window. This was a disappointment. The cabin was very small. Even with only 2 of us it was crowded. It was annoying to us that there was such a strong push on alcoholic beverages, even at breakfast time. Not a very suitable environmant for children. The food in the 2 main restaurants that were included in the price of the cruise without an extra fee was OK but nothing to "brag" about. The portions were tiny. The service was OK but not as good as in my previous cruises. Since $10 per person per day was added to your final bill there is no insentive for the crew members to go the "extra mile" and provide exceptional service. The shows in the evening were not very good or entertaining either. This was our 5th cruise, the previous 4 on Carnival which were great and I will not sail Norwegian again

Excellent Experience.. by JeffN3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was our first cruise and it was fabulous. Our room stewards could not have been more attentive or friendly. The food, including the Chocolate Buffet was out of this world. Unless you have a teenager, the soda program isn't the best... you have to drink 4-5 soda's/day to be worth it. I found with buying mixed drinks I didn't get my money's-worth out of the soda program. Attention to sanitation was top-notch. They had everyone using hand sanitizer which was nice. Overall.... a great experience I can't wait to do again.

a disapointment by DimitriosL

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

on the second day of the cruise with my family my 8 year old son steped on a broken tile in the kids pool and we spend two hours in the doctors office. The doctor said that he had removed all that was in his foot. For five days of the cruise my son would be limping for all the excursions wich brought us alot off discomfort because we would and them early because he would be in pain. On the fifth day we stoped at Cozemal and we went to Paradise beach which I recomend highly and we did swimming all day which the sea water helped my son to open his wound and when we went to our rooms my wife and I took a twizer and picked on the wound and pulled a piece of tile that was in his foot that the doctors told us there was nothing in it. The other things I was dissapointed in was we are a family of five and for us to do the excursions tru Norwegian was very expensive so we had booked them thru the internet and we saved about $150 every time but we were never told that we would have to wait for 3 hours on the ship for the people that have booked their excursions thru Norwegian to get off the ship first then we would be allowed to leave the ship, which at that point the taxis would begone and we would have to wait for them to return and that would limit us on time and we would have to rush through the excursion and we had the fear that we would be left behind because on the first one we allmost missed the ship because of all the delays, thankfully of another familly was having the same issue that day and the lady had rushed back and would not allow the crew of the ship to close the doors until her family had gotten back from the excursion and thats how we got on board. On my last complaint we were never told that Norwegian would be charging us $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12 a day for what they called services for a total of $240 at hte end of the week while we were tiping thru the intere cruise so that was a BIG SURPRISE at the end.

Could have been better by LindaT10

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Our first cruise was with Norwegian on the Dream, it was great. This time the food was not good, the male staff except for the casino and Blue Lagoon were almost grumpy, like it was an effort to get you a drink or serve you. We had a great time at the casino, the staff was great. Other than not following rules land casino's use and the frustration of the tournament seat changes it was great. I would recommend a cruise on Norweigan just not sure about the Spirit.

A Week in Paradise by DebbieD8

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)

Overall it was a good trip. The weather was very good, the ports were excellent and the staff were great. The ship was clean and beautiful. The beds were not comfortable and the activities on the ship (especially days at sea) could have been better for our teenager.

Norwegian Spirit Caribbean Cruise by SueH8

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The Norwegian Spirit is an older ship in dire need of updating. The decor is Asian and not exceptionally attractive. Size of ship was great though and easy to get around. We had an oceanview cabin, deck 6, in the forward section of the ship. It was a great location, quiet and near everything. The cabins were clean and efficient. Our cabin stewards were excellent, very professional and gracious at all times. Food was not as good on this ship as I have experienced on other lines. The evening meals were better than the buffets but this is not unusual. Entertainment was very poor (comedians, jugglers, staff skits, etc. I was surprised after having seen such great shows on other cruise lines. I was also disappointed in the lack of lectures, etc. and things to do. The Trivia, which our group really likes, was very disorganized and poorly run. The man doing Trivia could hardly speak English and the ship was full of cruisers of all nationalities who could not understand him. Most of the foreign guests were very proficient in English and were lost!! There were also several programs that involved a cover before you could attend: wine tasting, etc. Not good. We liked all the ports. This is the reason we chose the Spirit. We hired drivers and took our own tours. We also took some city tours that were half the price of the tours offered on the ship. That's about it. All in all we had a great time with good friends. I am not sure I would cruise with Norwegian again.

For a seasoned crusier - it was mediocor by HildieC

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This iteniary is not the best - the two Countries of Guatemala and Honduras are very poor and it's not a good "ashore" trip. Beaches are horrible! Good shopping for jade. I paid for a tour that said "beach trip". No way! I definitely think the ship should say "no swimming as beach is poluted and unsafe". I would never have gone on this tour had I known about the beach. I think they should give me my money back. The ship is small and easy to get around but it does not have much in entertainment if that is what you want. Food was good everywhere. Service was good. I didn't like the fact that whenever you wanted to do something there was usually a charge for it. i. e. yoga, SPA was VERY expensive, i. e. $180 for a 1 hour massage! I have been on many ships and this one is not my favorite.

Great Staff by SheilaW1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship is due for an overall update. The room we had still smelled of stale cigarette smoke from the day when smoking was permitted in the rooms. The carpet showed cigarette burns, the drapery had a couple holes in it, the mattress sagged in two different places from apparent overuse. Although the staff did an excellent job of maintaing the accomodations, it would have been a better experience all the way around with fresher or newer acoutrements.

A delightul time! by DianeS15

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple

This was my first cruise and it was most enjoyable and relaxing. I loved everything about it except the prices on drinks and some of the food (the duck and lobster were two major disappointments). Loved the fruit soups and want to learn to make them.

A GREAT GETAWAY by AnnB9

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I was very pleased to experience for the first time Norwegians freestyle cruising aboard the Norwegian Spirit traveling to Roatan Island, Santo Tomas De Castilla in Guatemala, Belize City and Cozumel out of the Port of New Orleans. I can only say that I wish I had sampled their approach to cruising five cruises ago. With 11 restaurants on the ship, one truly is free to do whatever, whenever. Yes, the specialty restaurants do require advance reservations, but I was happy with Raffles, the Blue Lagoon and, the more formal dinning room, Windows, where you can get anything from comfort food (thats right, hot dogs, hamburgers, French fries, buffalo wings, etc.) to duck lorange and lobster. You just show up whenever you are hungry and since my shore excursions usually involved getting wet, muddy, hot, and sweaty or any combination or all four of the above, the last thing I wanted to do when I got back to the ship was dress for dinner. The freestyle cruising let me head straight for one of their four luxurious hot tubs and a cold beer. The extensive selection and variety of shore excursions was particularly impressive. There was something for every level of exertion, but not to be missed is the dolphin swim. I didnt quite believe the brochures when they billed at as the adventure of a lifetime, but my dolphin swim lived up to all that and more. NCL made every effort to accommodate the infinite wishes and desires of their passengers from the quiet elegance of their library to the great jazz band that rocked long into the night. The cabins were spacious, comfortable and no amenity was overlooked. In fact the only thing overlooked in my cabin was the ocean. I must commend the ships architects on their bathrooms which were ingeniously designed to accommodate two people at the same time in complete privacy. Even NCLs mandatory disembarkation briefing was made fun and entertaining. Need I say more about New Orleans as a point of departure?! Be sure you allot a few extra days either before or after the cruise even if its only long enough to stuff your face with beignets and indulge in a big bowl of gumbo. In New Orleans, its always a party! THANK YOU NCL!

You take the good, you take the bad... by KevinR3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Spirit / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship itself was clean and well decorated. The staff was friendly and polite. But from the minute you walk onto the ship there is a crew member trying to get you to buy something. Usually it's drinks (which are VERY expensive on this ship), but they also wanted $40-$100 to play BINGO, and $15-$25 to dine in the restaraunts serving the "cruise" food that you would expect. The live music on the ship was outstanding. All of the performers in the theater were wonderful and approachable. You can even stop the head chef in the hall and chat with him! My wife and I had a room with a balcony and it was awesome. We woke up every morning and enjoyed a cup of coffee while watching the sun rise out of the ocean. Our room steward was great too, the place was always spotless.

The ship was beautiful, very classy and clean. The service was top notch. We had a inside stateroom and it was comfortable. The bathroom seemed more spacious than other inside staterooms we have been in.
