Great trip.  Second time cruising on the Getaway and it was just as good the second time around.  Staff is professional and always helpful.  Food and service are always good.  Entertainment, especially Groove International, is great.

FREESTYLE by rontyp

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I love the Getway and its crew. They are all so helpful and personal. They all work hard to make sure their guest have a great experience.I have found the food in all venues has improved. Also the presentation.I have found in my experience talking to guest from other cruise lines have to adapt to freestyle. It takes them a few days to get into it....I tell them to introduce themselves to the crew, because they work all over the ship and they will remember you in different restaurants.

They have plenty of dinning options on board

Also the ship is very very clean. The last time I was on they rated a 100% health inspection.Needless to say the crew was proud as heck over their rating

I feel NCL is the leader in the cruise business now.

Very crowded. by jeanebutler

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

While the Getaway is a very beautiful ship it seems as though there are too many passengers onboard.  Common areas were extremely crowded.  There were a lot of families with small children on board.  The cabin hallways are very narrow and not easy to navigate.  The balconies are beautiful but quite skimpy. While the main dining rooms were quite accommodating, the main buffet did not have adequate seating. Overall, the food and service were great but the ship was overcrowded. It was almost impossible to sit by the pool or get in the hot tubs.

Did not enjoy the larger ship! by wolffden61

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Not enough things to do on the ship.  Bingo was not offered enough.  Seating in Comedy Club are hard wooden chairs.  Seating by the piano player and game shows consisted of folding chairs in the guest services area.  I go on a cruise to be pampered.  This ship did not do any of that for me.  It definitely was missing the WOW factor.  Missed the glass elevators, the beautiful atrium area, and the comfy plush seats.  Who ever heard of having entertainment in the guest services area.  You need a reservation for all major entertainment.  I like to have my dinner and then just go to the theater and see a show each night.  It was too much of a hassle to book everything and pre plan each night of your ship.  I will definitely stick with the smaller ships that offer so much more.  Never saw the cruise director until the final night.  I don't want to stand in lines and wait on my vacation.  I missed the bar service walking around the ship.  Never again.

Getaway is nice! by AmyMC

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Just got off the getaway on a 7 day cruise from Miami. This ship is pretty nice- lots of dining options, disappointing that there's only one main pool unless you buy access to vibe- but the gym works out pretty well and the casino is set up well. overall, not a bad ship!

Honeymoon by agillyguy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Where do I even begin? I booked about a month in advance and took advantage of one of many promos. How couldn't I enjoy all the free delicious food and alcohol I could consume? Free breakfast delivered to your room at the time of your choosing? Yes please! Perfect weather, beaches, a balcony, great performers everywhere, and a fantastic casino all made this a really wonderful and memorable trip.

My wife and I showed up at the port very early with no boarding passes. It only took a minute of standing there looking confused until a Norwegian employee found us, tagged and took our luggage, and sent us to where we would board the ship. Without our boarding passes, we were sent to a security desk, then sent past the entire line where carry on luggage is scanned and passes are checked. Once on the ship, there was no shortage of things to do. The ship left port late around 10pm, and we watched the Miami city skyline float by from our balcony.

The ship was extremely clean, the decor was modern and tasteful, and hand sanitizing stations were everywhere. We even had our own designated house cleaning guy.

The destinations we visited were mixed:

We really enjoyed Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas. We para-sailed, paddle boarded, tanned, and swam in the ocean. Food and beverage were provided complimentary.

Jamaica wasn't very much fun, but it would have been better had we known what to expect. We don't partake in any herbal adventures, but if that's your cup of tea (or brownie) you'll love that aspect of Jamaica. I wish we had chosen a Norwegian excursion here, but instead we shopped and took a private cab tour. The locals are inappropriately pushy about selling you worthless tourist junk, and the cab driver was definitely partnered with some local shops.

The other islands were great. We did our own snorkeling/stingray adventure in the Caymans, and zip-lining through the cruise in Mexico. Both were equally awesome.

The entertainment was very good all around. Seeing all the theater performances was worth it. There is also singing and comedy available all over the ship.

The food is excellent. The buffet food is much higher quality than I'd expect from a buffet, and the specialty dining options are better than most chain restaurants in the US.

After this cruise, my wife and I had no trouble at all deciding that we're going to be cruising again. Since this was our first, we'll probably try another line to compare, but I have a feeling this isn't our last cruise with Norwegian.

Casino and Card Room by jtinline

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

There needs to have two Let it Ride games. I never got a chance to play for the 7 days. Stood for over 45 minutes each time the tables were open  and finally  gave each time. When our group tried to play cards the chairs were missing. Every time there was a conference meeting, they would come and  take the chairs. Also, the smoking in the Casino is really bad. Should have at least 1 or 2 nights of None smoking. Love the Cruise Line and had a great time. Food was great in the Special Restaurants. Would be back again.

Nice Cruise and Ship, But... by BostonCruiser5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We enjoyed the cruise and the ship very much. I was surprised by the number of activities that required additional costs. Maybe this is typical, as I hadn't been on a cruise for over 10 years. Would I cruise again given our experience? I think so. It was very relaxing, the food was very good, and we met many fine people with whom we had many laughs.

A great cruise and food by laneship

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

HappyWhils the weather was dropping snow in Washington, this caused some rough seas. But the food was great. We missed our last port because of the weather.  And the weather also canceled our flight, so we ended up getting home a day later.  About the ship, the speaker in our room was didn't operate the food was delicious. And the shows were also great.

Cruise 17 Jan 2016 by markhell

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Loved the ship. Everything on board was brilliant. The staff was extremely friendly, the restaurants great, aminities and cabin flawless. The only bummer was the weather. In Cozumel we got soaked in rain, the jet ski excursion was cancelled and we did not stop at Stirrup Island at all. In my opinion there should be a compensation for missing out the stop at Stirrup Island since the reason to do the cruise are the land excursions. I mainly booked because there were supposed to be 4 excursions in 7 days

The ship was amazing. Clean, friendly, active. Great food, high quality. Even the bad weather was handled expertly by the captain.  No reason not to book this.

excellent by gncastine

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Very pleased with the ship, food, service, drinks, entertainment.

Although when we arrived, we had a 2 1/2 hour wait to get processed to board and no announcement was made as to the delay and we had to stand in line. This was very difficult for many elderly people and people with small children.  We could see the people behind the counter just standing there and no one explained the hold up.  Other people were left standing outside.  Once we boarded, we were unable to eat because we had to perform the emergency drill and the buffet was closed.

It would also have been nice to have ESPN on the TV

Good, not great by towens101

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The ship was nice, the room size good, the bathroom size much better than a lot of ships.  Food was very disappointing.  Had we not used the Specialty Dining we would have been very bored with the food choices for a week.  It didn't seem that the Buffet nor the complimentary dining room menus changed much from day to day.  Only way to get the old "formal night" fare of steak and lobster was pay for it!  Not real crazy about the "free style dining"; but highly recommend that you make reservations prior to departure for all that you can - that made it nicer, in my opinion, not having to wait in line for dinner, etc.

Entire ship is very casual, no need to really pack much of anything formal.  Even in the nicer specialty dining rooms saw super casual.  Not the formality of cruises of old for sure.

Our room was Forward on the 8th floor, balcony.  SUPER loud on the nights that they had shows in the theatre, directly below us.  As long as you're a night owl no worries, but if you were in your room before 11:00 PM - wow!

Recommend the Thermal Spa, was great.  Lots of thermal beds and quiet.

They need to fix the smoking areas - too open to other areas.  Casino is open to the Atrium and thus all floors attached to the Atrium were smoky. Outside smoking areas were semi-open so couldn't stand to be on that side of the ship on those decks (8 & 15).  They need to make all ship non-smoking or close in the areas more.

Sadly didn't get to go to the private island (main reason booked this cruise), due to the major storm that hit the east coast - but the Captain did a great job of keeping us in more calmer seas until we had to head NE to Miami.  Would have liked a few more onboard activates however with an additional day at sea.

Comedy guys that were on board were great!  Saw them several times - be sure to book those shows in advance too, as they fill up quickly.

Best family vacation yet!!!! by prestoncrook

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This cruise had so much for everyone to do. It covered children ages 5 and 10, to the parents longing for rest. The Splash Academy had things for the kids to do all day to give parents time to get away at anytime of day. Even if you decide not to do a shore excursion, we only got off to shop, they have things to entertain you on the ship. The staff was excellent.

great escape/nice ship by LovesCruises

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Wonderful experience overall; beautiful ship with lots of activities as well as private niches to get away from all the activities. The Adults only Spice H20 bar is a nice area to relax without getting splashed by little kids, and the water slides are great for spending time with kids. Really enjoyed the specialty dining restaurants and overall itinerary.  Library is rather poorly stocked (and poorly planned with a shared wall with the atrium's live music and noisy activities?)--so not much of a "library" atmosphere.  The only real problem we had was with the internet connection service; we purchased--and used-- 250 minutes online as part of our package, but were only able to access the internet for a total of 37 minutes during the cruise due to slow connections /not enough band width (I ended up having to do my essential work at 4 in the morning in order to be able to send emails in less than 30 minutes).  Overall, highly recommended!

NCL getaway westerm caribbean from Miami by brassbell

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

If you have not cruised before and have kids, you'll love this BIG ship. If you have used lines like Princess you probably won't  like it/The ship is too big nd this causes a need for  a ticket to do most anything, Parking in  Miami is far too

expensive,Kids are everywhere, Eating at the select restaurants is extra and very

expensive, drinks are very expensive. The entertainment for the mass is limited to just 2 in a full week, not 7 like most ships, Don't book by just price

Second time not as good as the first by kalin94

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I would not suggest booking through BJ'S Travel.  I booked a year in advance and had nothing but trouble with my reservation, spent approximately 12 hours total on the phone with them having to take time out of work to do so and only to arrived at the airport the day of the cruise to find out yet another mistake had occurred we had no transfers to the airport that were paid for a year in advance.  Once aboard I spent half the cruise fixing my reservation.  I didn't have fun.  The cruise staff, food and ports overall were great once we had everything straightened out.  I was a second time cruiser on this ship and was disappointed to see that the shows were all the same as the year before when we went.  Also was disappointed that the specialty dining package did not include the illusionarium show which was included the year before.  The food however, was excellent.  The "free" beverage package is however not free as a gratuity tax is now charged that did not exist a year ago.  I would like to recognize the wait staff as all work very hard to please their guests.  There was also a lot of confusion with the walk off disembarkment procedure this time as we were given several different answers as to the process depending on who you asked.  I don't think I'll cruise with Norwegian anytime soon and am considering giving Royal a try.
