Highly dissappointed by acmcoleman

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

While enjoying different options of food that were awesome there were many things that were a deal breaker that lead me to the conclusion of never sailing with Norwegian Cruise line again. First I feel when you purchase The Ultimate Drink package they should supply  you with a cup to refill your soda or juice but this did not happen. You have to order it from a bar by the cup or have the soda package (to recieve the refillable cup)which is crazy to me because I thought ultimate meant all even though I was able to order soda from the bar this was a big inconvenience especially when it's late. Another thing that bothered me was their Room Service policy it was $7.95 per order at any time not just late nights which is ridiculous. The hospitality was not the best I expect to be greeted with smiles and hellos by any crew members that I come in contact with or passing this was not the case especially in the specialty restaurants and some complementary restaurants (like taste and savor)never O'shenagans service there was awesome all the time. And last but not least I purchased a room with a balcony because of the beautiful views and I am also a smoker when we were informed that we can't smoke on the balcony just designated glass boxes on the decks by the kids swimming area or top decks like the 16th this also was disappointing and a Big Inconvenience.

Not all that by niaimaniwornum

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I went to celebrate my 35th birthday with one of my friends, the experience was memorable in a fair way. The housekeeper was thorough , professional and great. The Tropicana restaurant service was slow and the food was cold. When I brought it to the managers attention he apologized and stated that he would be in touch but was not. The manager at the Savor was great and attended to every table in the restaurant in addition he sent chocolate covered strawberries to my room on my birthday. The activities on the ship were fair. There was no Captains ball. The excursions were unnecessarily expensive. We met locals and the excursions were the same ones the ship was offering were quarter of the cost of what the ship was charging for the excursions.  The locals needed the money more and were great tour guides. At the Mojito bar I was purposely overcharged for two drinks when I ordered one. I brought it to a managers attention and it was taken off.

Good cruise. Not mind-blowing or exceptional, but good bang for your buck by zaxe

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The best thing about NCL's Getaway Western Caribbean that visits Roatan, Honduras, Belize City, Belize, and Costa Maya & Cozumel, Mexico is the bang for your buck during the off-season. The Free at Sea offers are exceptional, with the best value being the Unlimited Beverage Package (UBP). A friend recommended spending the money on the Vibe Beach Club, and it was worth every penny. Located on Deck 17 Forward of the Getaway, this place that only accommodates 65 people and has 6 huge 2-person round cabanas (reservations required) offers cold towels, chilled fruit skewers and butler service, with a private bar offering ultra-premium drinks. It's a stark contrast to the insanity of the main pool area of Deck 15. My only complaint about Vibe is that it closes too damn early - at 7 pm every day. It should remain open until at least 10 pm, because while it's nice to lay out, the bulk of the folks I met there and chatted with were there to just hang out at the bar and in the hot tubs and enjoy the view. NCL needs to seriously reconsider the hours for Vibe.

That said, for being a newer ship, and having been on the Oasis Class ships of RCCL, I was disappointed with the feel of the Getaway. It feels cold and lacking of character and space. You feel cramped and congested anywhere you go except for the open air decks and the Waterfront areas. The ship's finishes are sleek and contemporary, but the lack of open spaces internally is really no different of the cruise liners of old: Low ceilings and cramped quarters.

The Free Fall Water Slides are really a lot of fun, and a must do. Didn't do the Ropes Course, but it looked awesome. The Rock Climbing Wall has a super hard path, so if that's your thing, give it a try.

The fitness classes are actually pretty good. I was thrilled to be able to spin 3 times during the cruise, but the timing of the classes are tough if you have shore excursions. You'll be exhausted before you even get off the ship!

The Mandara Spa was excellent and the Thermal Suite was awesome. That said, the Salt Bath is bogus at best in my opinion. My biggest complaint about the spa is the hard selling that the therapists do before and after your treatments. This totally ruins the point of the spa experience, and I made a point of saying as much when I was there. It's enough to make me skip the spa next time (if there is a next time). The treatments are on-par with a high-end spa on the mainland in Miami, and with the discounts they offered, it wasn't a bad value overall, though still pricey.

Our mini-suite wasn't much better than a regular cabin, other than offering a double vanity — which to me was a waste of precious space — and a large shower with body jets which was nice. The closet space was decent, and I appreciated the concealed storage areas throughout, which were really helpful. Of note, practically ALL the cabins on the Getaway have TINY balconies. The chairs can barely fit on them, and cannot be turned to face the sea - there simply isn't enough distance between the door and the railing to do so. The two chairs and tiny side table take up about 75% of the space on the balcony, and so it begs the question "why bother with a balcony at all?."

The food at the specialty dining venues we went to were generally very good. Cagney's Steakhouse was excellent. Period. It was really, really good. We also went to Cocina which was also excellent. Moderno Churrascaria was a big disappointment. The meats were under seasoned, and the service was slow.

Surprisingly, Savor and Taste, the complimentary dining rooms, which are more set out like traditional restaurants, were really, really good. I expected buffet-quality food as I have experienced with other cruise ships, but not so on the Getaway, and for this they deserve kudos.

The entertainment offered was really good. I didn't do Million Dollar Quartet because I had seen it on Broadway already, but the Illusionarium, Burn Up The Floor, Comedy Shows and Howl at the Moon were all excellent. The Ice Bar was cool, but a bit of a disappointment because there really wasn't much to do in there, and it IS really cold so you're not wanting to stick around for long - it needs some work, but the irony of a Miami Beach scene in ice is amusing.

The biggest issue we had was this. My son is 19 and I did the parental waiver for him to have beer and wine if he so chose during the cruise. This meant that his card was not cut to indicate he was allowed to make these purchases. For the entire cruise, he was literally harassed by the bartenders who refused to serve him SODA (for the record, he only purchased beer and wine with me, in my presence, anyway - he spent the bulk of his time playing basketball and ping pong, so was always getting non-alcoholic beverages) simply because they did not believe his cruise card was legitimate. This happened despite my son having his government-issued ID to prove his age. Nothing we said or did worked to alleviate this problem. It was absurd and enough to make me not want to cruise NCL again, because it spoiled the experience for us.

I'll end my review with this overarching thought. In terms of value for money, this cruise was terrific. In terms of service throughout the ship, it was so-so to poor, especially from the beverage staff. The exception to this was at Vibe Beach Club, where Jeff and the other bartenders were EXCEPTIONAL!!!!

NCL consistent as expected by luisl1123

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I have been on a few NCL cruise ships as well as Princess and Carnival. The NCL Getaway crew did a marvelous job of controlling the flow of people throughout the cruise from embarkation to disembarkation. Not an easy feat yet handled expertly.

NCL Getaway June 2016 by Cruiser268

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Onboard entertainment was excellent, the four ports of call were exactly what we were looking for - exotic, safe and beautiful.  We wish we knew about the service charges at the "free" dining spots and the daily room service charge which were unexpected charges.

Fun Fun Fun by Cruiser628

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

The itinerary was changed at the last minute because of over crowding in Cozumel.  Cozumel and Costa Maya days were switched.  It turned out to be nice because it rained in Costa Maya the day we were originally scheduled to be there.

Make sure you go to O'Sheehans and have a cheesecake brownie.  They are amazing.

We are gold members going on Platinum at the end of this cruise.  The ship was out of lapel pins so I had to go onto Ebay and purchase a used one after getting off the ship.  It was disappointing to hear that they have been out for 3 months.  If something is standard on all ships then it should be available on this one too.  They will not send you one in the mail if they get them in.  You must be on the ship in order to get it.

We usually get VIP priority check in but was told they only allow Platinum to check in under VIP.  It was the first time we had not checked in as a VIP.  They said it was because the ship was so big.  That was lame because the Breakaway is the same size and we had VIP checkin there from NYC.  I think it is the Miami port.

We expected fireworks as well since we had them on the Breakaway and they were advertised. We were told they have not had them in 3 months either.  Very disappointing.

7 night cruise on the Getaway by TerriLandeyBluv

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

So we started out in Miami and the first thing I noticed was that they only had 2 pools.  One for adults and one family.  I asked where the other pools were and they told me that was it.  I was used to having more pools.   The last day a kid pooped in the family pool and it was closed all day.   They originally said the kids couldn't go in the adult pool but eventually changed their mind.  This is the ONLY complaint I have about the ship.  The food was amazing, the state room amazing, the entertainment amazing.  We had 2 excursions one zip lining in I Roatan and a day in the Mayan village with lunch with a family.  Both fantastic!!  Loved everything about the ship and you would never know that there were 4008 people on the ship.  Love

Getaway was great by Marystag

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

the best part of this cruise is that you could eat anytime, it was so relaxing not worrying about getting dressed up and having to get to the dining room at a certain time.  The entertainment was wonderful, we didn't make any reservations but got to see all the shows with good seats.  We had a mini suite and the shower was the best, it was so big for a cruise ship.  All I can say best cruise ever.......

Lots of fun by zuziyong

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Western

This was our first trip on a big cruise ship and it was very fun. There are so many activities for everyone that it would be hard t be bored. I was impressed by the food on the complimentary restaurants. They were overall very good, except O'Sheehan's, it was not our type of dining. All the restaurants, including the specialty ones were great, the ambiance was awesome and the food yummy. Our cabin was very comfortable, we got a large balcony at the front of the ship. Lots of space and comfy.

Some points they could improve: 1) The emergency drill given on the first day was only in English and there were lots of Spanish speaking passenger that couldn't understand a thing. 2) We all know that these amazing deals for a cabin for 7 days are the catch, once on board, the drinks are super expensive ($12-$14 per drink) + the 18% tip. Should consider to lower those prices, passengers they don't have any other options to buy drinks. 3) I wanted to use the spa but they only sell you a pass for the whole week for $199 per person. A one day pass would be awesome.
