Our family of three (H, W, 16 yo son) had a fantastic cruise on the Escape. I will qualify that by saying we were in the Haven, so this likely had a major impact on our cruise. We picked NCL for the price and as teen-friendly. We had only cruised once before (on RCCL) and even though we enjoyed it, there were things that we did not like about cruising, and the Haven solved those for us. We don't like the crowded, on-top-of-each-other pools, the small rooms, and the small bathrooms. In the Haven we had a quiet (maybe a touch too quiet?) sundeck, a one bedroom cabin with a main room with a pull out for our son, and two bathrooms! Problems solved. Oh! We also HATED the drink procedure on Royal Caribbean, as they had to swipe your card everytime, print a receipt, get you to sign the receipt, and only one drink per card. We were used to all-inclusives where you just walk up get your drink and walk away. ON RCCL it seemed to take forever. The drink situation on NCL was easy -- so receipts, no signing, and two drinks were allowed on one card -- not that we would each have two drinks at once, but if one person is in the bathroom or whatever, the other can still order drinks for both without having to have both cards in hand. Maybe this is a small thing, but it was noticeable for us.
Cabin: We were in an Aft Haven room -- our balcony was enormous with three loungers, a dining table with 4 chairs and a side table. The balcony curved around to the edge of the ship so you could lean over and see where you were going too. Overall the cabin was outstanding! Also the Aft was not a big deal at all for getting to the Haven. And there are aft elevators that were only about 150 steps away (I counted) from our door.
Entertainment: We decided not to do any production shows as they are not really our thing, but we went to Howl at the Moon (great if you like sing along piano playing - we do), and saw one stand up comedy show (about 35 minutes and just average), and the comedy juggler (entertaining but not fantastic). We went to Spice H2O on a few nights and was fun, but we're not crazy partiers; mostly enjoyed the dance music and people-watching. Also did the Casino a few nights and all told broke even. We like roulette, but we're not big gamblers, so we played the $10 table (which we initially thought was too high since it was $1 or $2 on RCCL), but the other roulette table was $25 and as a result, hardly anyone played that table, which made our table super busy every night. Sometimes that was fun as we met some great folks, but sometimes people were a little pushy to get to the table. Anyway. The District Brew House was fun too, usually not very busy and had a guy playing piano and singing there, and the bartenders were attentive. Photo booth there was $5 but be forewarned whatever you do in there is shown on a TV outside the booth, so the people sitting there could have a good laugh at the expense of the unsuspecting! Overall, the entertainment on this cruise was much better than RC. But this relates to the smaller bar venues and not the production shows. The drop slides and the tube slide were lots of fun. We did not do the ropes course, although I kept meaning to, we never got around to it.
Dining: we only ate in Manhattan once (nothing great), the buffet for dinner once (pretty bad), Teppanyaki was excellent food and a good show, and Moderno was pretty good. I will say they had a cooked pineapple there that was really amazing. I would go back just for that! We also ate at Cagney's and sat on the Waterfront which was excellent. Other nights we ate at the Haven restaurant which was very good to excellent. The atmosphere for us was way better then the main dining room scene. Did O'Sheehan's twice for breakfast because it was open the latest (until 11 for breakfast) and it was good, although menu was limited -- I don't think they had pancakes or waffles. We also ordered room service for coffee and pastries or yogurt so the early riser in the family (me) could enjoy and not starve while waiting for the others to get up and get moving. Margaritaville was free on embarkation day for Haven guests, so we went there. Service was not that good, and the nachos were not as good as what other CC members have said. That may just be a matter of taste, but they use a cheese sauce, and between that and the chili, the nachos are soggy pretty quickly.
Teen club: Our son had a really, really good time at Entourage! Maybe I don't want to know how good of a time. . . He never wanted to leave, and every night came back at 1:00 (the stated curfew) and begged to stay a little longer as everyone else (so he said!) was still staying out. They apparently don't enforce the curfew that well, although he did mention they were being "chased" by security a few times. My guess is the teens were more running around to avoid them and not be seen. In any event, we hardly saw him the whole cruise as he was so engaged with the other kids all week. Now he wants to go on two cruises in this next year so he can get them in before he turns 18 and ages out. AHHH the luxury of not having to worry about having vacation days and the budget to pay for two cruises. LOL. Bottom line though, if he is having a good time, my husband and I can have a good time. Nothing worse than a grumpy teenager, and the only thing that made him grumpy on this trip was having to eat dinner or spend time with us!
Excursions: In St. Thomas, we arranged for a bus tour and then beach time. This was the worst part of the vacation for me. We used Brenda and Franko's and did not enjoy it at all. I have not reviewed them on Trip Advisor, where they get great reviews, because I'm afraid of them! They are mean to those who complain! Hopefully they don't see this, but I would urge anyone to stay away. The bus tour took way longer than it should and stopped too many times at too many lookouts; don't be fooled that you have a choice of beaches. You will end up at Emerald Beach near the airport and not where you might want to go. They must live nearby that beach. I wanted Megan's Bay and it was never even offered. Take my advice and don't use them. I'm sure they are nice people but horrible excursion. At Tortola, we had chartered a private boat for the day but due to a small craft advisory, they had to cancel. Very bummed, but we were able to book Virgin Gorda and that was really an incredible place! In Nassau, we did Atlantis as we had never been and needed to check it off the list of places to go. The rides were great; it was nowhere near as crowded as we thought it would be (6 ships in port I think); a little short for the time you can spend, but we had a lot of fun while there.
Finally, the crowds on the ship were not so bad as some say. I will agree the pool looked like a nightmare, but as noted, we don't like the closeness to strangers so it would not have been enjoyable for us. And I don't think could ever get in any cruise ship pool because it seems like "foot soup" (my apologies to the pool lovers). Otherwise, we didn't find the crowds to be so bad; we never waited for anything at restaurants or bars; maybe we waited for the elevators a few times but it really was not bad at all. And the smoke is way over-exaggerated. We only noticed it the very first day when we walked through, and it was more of a quick thought ("I can smell smoke") than it actually being a problem. Even in the casino, it never bothered us, and they were making frequent announcements that smoking was only for active players, and not a smokers' gathering spot.
Overall, we would definitely cruise with Norwegian again, but honestly we will only go in the Haven (or something similar), and will probably never cruise again in a regular cabin on any ship! Less
