Norwegian Dawn

11 Night Southern Caribbean (San Juan Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 06, 2019

Ship: Norwegian Dawn

Cabin type: Suite

Traveled as: Family (older children)

Reviewed: 5 years ago

Review summary

Don't look for many supermodels on the beaches in January. Lots of large, older people and very few kids. That can be a plus or a minus depending on your point of view because many of these individuals believe they actually are supermodels/super rich and dress and behave in that character.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
Got in late, missed the 1st muster drill, and special welcome events due to airport issues.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We stay away from the buffet and use the main dining rooms and specialty venues.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
There was always something to do and we never felt forced or herded into activities.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Major shows were very good but the lounge acts were average at best. Miss the dueling pianos that are on the larger ships but the small venues are always either the favorite or least favorite entertainment.

Children's Programs

Our youngest is way over 18.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We actually wrote several Hero cards out for our staff. When you are on vacation, taking time to do this sort of homework shows how much they went over the top to serve us.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Clean - yes. Design - confusing (with lots of dead ends and can't get there from here scenario's). But, it is an older ship and we have seen much worse in terms of design.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Good size, very comfortable, and well kept. It housed 3 very nicely.

Ship tip

Study the ship maps before your voyage. Getting around and finding your way will be much easier.

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

4 out of 5
It's a nice port, and we did the city tour with a stop in old San Juan and the fort. After you have visited a few times - there isn't much new, but we felt safe.

Willemstad, Curacao

4 out of 5
After a day at sea, we were ready to walk. Didn't see much in the way of nice beaches but the shopping area kept us busy.

Oranjestad, Aruba

4 out of 5
Pretty much the same as Willemstad, Curaco. But the floating bridge area did provide lots of photo opportunities.

Kralendijk, Bonaire

4 out of 5
This port provided a very nice local artist market with lots of cool paintings and specialty souvenir items I have never seen elsewhere.

St. George's, Grenada

Did the whale / dolphin excursion. It was rough, no sightings, an hour overdue, and people were getting sick. Bathrooms on board were nasty. Fortunately NCL gave us a free upscale meal as compensation and they will likely stop offering this trip since so many complained about it.

Bridgetown, Barbados

5 out of 5
Just visit the Boatyard (look up their website). It's inexpensive, free wifi, free drink, free umbrella/chair, free cab back to ship, and one hell of a party atmosphere!!!

Castries, St. Lucia

5 out of 5
Took the water taxi over to the city and visited the local cathedral for Sunday mass. It was a experience to see the locals faith - something very rare on a cruise.

St. John's, Antigua

5 out of 5
Take a short cab ride to Fort James beach. It's close, clean, reasonable, and secluded. You still have full facilities and no crowds.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
Water taxi over to the main area and people watch on the beach. It's a great view and nice beach.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

4 out of 5
Shoppers paradise. Wanted to visit Megan's Bay - but never got there.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Great - then again we were in a suite.
