K-Love Cruise by Rutheclark4640

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Western

my favorite part of the K-Love Cruise was the concerts. However, as for the ship, I was disappointed. The food was just "ok", but definitely not what I expected. There wasn't much pool space, so lying in the sun was challenging. Standing in lines for every event and meal grew tiresome. The worst thing was that my credit card number was stolen when I used my credit card onboard, and an airline ticket purchased to Turkey in the amount of $664.00. That was very disappointing to find out that my credit card information was not safe with the cruise line employees. Angry

Divina January 2017 by PinellasRetiree

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Due to the large number of nationalities all announcements, theater intros, etc were in 6 languages.

The non-English speakers were rude and pushy - for example they would hit the close button on the elevation before we could walk on.

The food was skimpy, if listed as a plural (like onion rings) there would only be one on the plate.

We sailed from Miami and were thinking it would be English based - the crew had a hard time understanding us.

Don't waste your money by ymihere4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean

This was the third time on a MSC ship. The last time was on the Divinia. My sister thought it looked beautiful. They do have a Gluten free menu. I did overpay for my room. It was large Auria pkg. ( They have to get the staff to clean the inside Windows,)Food didn't impress me. If they offer beef shank don't get it. I got a bone. The ports we went to were so depressing. I've been on over 10 cruises, never going on MSC again. They book to many people. Dining rooms were packed.

A Beutiful Ship but a few problems by nlb105015

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean

We started this cruise with a problem, for some reason MSC decided that we owed them some money but this was not discovered until 3 days prior to the cruise, was fixed easily by our TA but problems popped up from check in. First husband was given a Classic card instead of the Gold and then they had put us in Second seating for dinner when all along our booking showed First.  We did complain and did get First seating on the second night and we were able to eat basically early the first. It took a couple of days to finally get with the cruise consultant but did and got husband his Gold card. Our first stop was Ocho Rios, Jamaica and we took a MSC snorkeling tour, which they took us to spot where there were a lot of tropical fish and anemones which were nice to see. Then they took us to a beach but in order to actually get on the beach you had to climb over the side of the boat into a speed boat, on the beach there was a restaurant but since all the tables were taken you could not get any  service except for drinks. Once done there on the ride back they had beer and rum punch, which was very good. Over all a good excursion.

The second stop was Aruba and again we did a MSC snorkeling excursion, This one they took us to a spot where you had to go up from the boat to see anything but they did not say that so we did not see anything, then they took up to a sunken boat but  the water there was not very clear so you could barely see the outline of the boat. On the way back they had rum punch which was good. Overall an okay excursion.

The third stop was Dominican Republic where we did a MSC excursion that took us to the Catholic Basilica and to Ponce De Leon's home.  The basilica was nice but we had thought it would be much older, while there we went to the museum on the grounds which while small was nice. The stop at Ponce De Leon's home was good, nice to see a home that was built in the 1500's.  The only problem on this excursion was the guide spent more time talking to the few French on the excursion and less time to the many English speaking people.

Our last stop was Nassau, Bahamas where we stayed on the ship as we have been to Nassau a few times and really don't care about it.

The food on the cruise was good but I noticed that the portion size in the dining room has gotten smaller. We mainly ate breakfast and lunch in the buffet which was good except that at breakfast the eggs were cold.

MSC has not changed the theater shows since our first cruise on the Divina so we only went to one which was very good. I feel that MSC has the best theater shows of any line we have been on.

MSC has implemented a new procedure for checking in where you enter your credit/debit card at a kiosk onboard, you have 36 hours to do this and it was easy.

For some reason disembarkation was going along good when it stopped, I think this had more to do with people unloading the luggage onshore than with the ship. So when it was time for our color to be called we decided to leave the ship and while getting off did not take long it did take awhile to get our luggage.

We most likely will cruise with MSC again but it may be awhile.

Terrible cruise by person123

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

To be fair, there were a few pros of this ship:

- The spaces are nicely decorated and seem well-maintained

- The pool and jacuzzi areas were nice

- Disembarkation was easy, but perhaps because we left the ship on off hours

- The cabin was pretty nice. Had a pretty spacious bathroom.

Now, on the all the many cons:

- #1, the food SUCKS. Worst food I've ever encountered on a cruise ship. Not nearly enough food variety in the buffet, and the dishes are disgusting. I barely ate anything on the ship. Mediocre pizza was the best thing in there. The regular dishes consisted of watery vegetables, dethawed old tasting fish, stews that looked like they came out of a big can, and some of the stuff had a subtle sterile/chemical taste to them.

The dining room food was slightly better but still awful. Portions were very small, and food quality was bad. The two nights I ate there I had rotten scallops that I almost spit back out if it werent for the other strangers at the table, mushy overcooked risotto, a filet mignon that did not look like a filet, water logged asparagus, and a bland soup that was too salty. Service felt very impersonal and took a long time to get food and drinks.

- #2 upcharging. I know all mid-level ships do this but it's extremely annoying to have to pay for every little thing beyond the basics. They had gelato and crepe carts out there - looked like a nice touch until you see you have to pay for them.

- #3 facilities not adequate. We were on a full ship and the dining facilities were simply insuffiecient for so many people. It was pretty much a zoo on the ship the entire time. They need more dining options, there's only ONE dining option outisde the restaurants and it's a jungle pretty much 24/7. The specialty restaurants were all booked - they need more dining facilities. We offered a tip to the hostess to get us in that night and all of a sudden a slot opened up. Very corrupt. Also the pool and sundeck was pretty much always packed to the gills. Had to circle the ship a couple times to find one free chair.

- #4 elevators were extremely slow. The algorithm they use for these elevators is clearly off. Wait time was about 3x what I'm used to on other ships. Saw a lot of elevators pass my floor or linger on floor without doors opening.

- entertainment was mediocre. The shows felt very sparse compared to other entertainment I've seen on other ships. Meh.

- Room service menu is outdated. Half the items on the menu they don't carry anymore or they ran out of. Also the room phone doesn't show the staff your cabin number for some reason so they always ask for it. The phone system should know what cabin you're calling from.

- Their Wi-Fi doesn't work. Their internet is extremely expensive at $5 for 10 min and $.60/minute after that.

- Felt a lot of ship motion. Seas did not look that choppy it seems that this ship just rocks a lot relative to the waves.

Understated European Elegance by hotvwchick

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Western

Embarkation.

Yes, it was slow. 30 minutes to get sorted out. I think we were there during the peak time though. They did express seniors and disabled guests to the front of the line.

The ship.

Its beautiful. The layout isn't the greatest. I kept referring to a map throughout most of the sailing. Kept very clean

The cabin.

We had 9080 with a balcony. Never really made good use of it. Think I will stick to oceanview. The bathroom was small but well laid out. I wasn't spending much time in there...lol...so it was fine. Beds were comfy. Cabin steward was awesome.

Entertainment.

My kids loved the kids/teen clubs. Lots of activities during the day. I was happy with just being on a cruise. Love the salt air, the breeze, and the beautiful blue ocean. All the rest of the activities were great. This is a European line so not as much going on as a mainstream line.

Food.

Dining room food and service were great. Plenty of choices. The buffet was good as well. It is one huge sprawling mass of food. The gelato was good but costs $. Free soft serve though.

Drinks

I bought the 18 driink tickets for myself. That was plenty for me. Never had a problem getting a beverage. I tipped $1 a drink and had the best service I ever had on a cruise. The kids had the nonalcoholic tickets and spent them mostly on gelato. Coffee/tea, juice, and milk are free at the buffets and restaurant.

Ports.

We did our own thing. I did some research and saved myself a lot of $$$ over the tours.

St Maarten. Used private tour company found on TRIPADVISOR. Great time!

San Juan. Took ferry/bus and went to the Bacardi factory. Dock is within walking distance of old San Juan.

Nassau. Took taxi to Atlantis. Went to Cabbage Beach rather then spending $700 for 4 people to spend the day at the water park.

Disembarkation

Easy, organized, fast, and simple.

Conclusion

Liked the price and cruise so much, we are booked for next Christmas. Thanks MSC.

MSC never agaien, by Dianedesj

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We have made over 20 cruises from different companies but first time on MSC.....and this was the last time.

The embarkation took over three hours in a real cahoots.

Room so small, no chairs, shower for one/120 pound person in a closet bathroom.

And this, in a "balcony" room!

Food, cafeteria style....cheapo. Even the specialty restaurants were not " special"

Italian resto with pizza...no pasta? Yes, no pasta just pizza.

We like a good cocktail and cognac b/4 and after meal with music but even the musicians/singer were mediocre.

Very, very dissapointing costly trip!

This is our 3rd time... by bigcrtt03

Sail date: /
Ship: MSC Divina

This is our 3rd time on a Divina. Boy it has gotten much better, the ship has always been beautiful. But on our first cruise the American type food was terrible but the Italian food was to die for. Now the hot dogs and hamburgers are much better they're actually edible now. Love the size of the ship, you always find something new each cruise on the Divina. It's not a fun ship like to Carnivals are it is a very relaxing and enjoyable classy experience. We look forward to our cruise in December 2017 on the Divina. The prices are great. although they are going up not as high as everyone else yet but they're getting there. We would like to do and MSC ship the Seaside next year.

Worst vacation ever. by daemonguy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

My wife and I scheduled a cruise in December of 2016.  Our previous experience with cruises were quite different, in that they, unlike MSC, apparently did concern themselves with customer satisfaction.

It began with an absolute disaster of an embarkation process.  Rather than assigning arrivals to group boarding, thus enabling them to remain seated and comfortable in the interim, MSC opted for the cutthroat approach; everyone gets in line and stays there.   We arrived at 11:30 and did not actually make it onto the ship until after 5 PM.  Additionally, we were told that the reason the boarding process was so long, was an extreme vetting routine performed by the Customs for all egressing passengers.  That was a lie.  We spoke to departing passengers who mentioned nothing of this at all but instead regaled us with tales of disoriented and uncoordinated egress routines from the line – which, as we discovered, is absolutely the truth.

When we finally did board, we eventually found our room despite the incorrect information on the provided maps.  My guess is, the Divina was retrofitted, and they never bothered to update the paper maps.  That fact speaks volumes for this cruise line.

We reached the room to find out luggage had not yet made it.   Odd, considering in less time on other lines, our bags were waiting for us and the room steward paraded the halls introducing himself and memorizing customer names.  On the Divina, the bags were missing, no steward to be found. We finally did meet ours, though only saw her once.  I didn’t bother to mention since it was days later, that upon our arrival the bathroom was dingy, and there were hairs in the sink.

We had not eaten since breakfast, so we sought something sate ourselves.  The buffet (an accurate term if one is merely describing a function that presents copious quantities of food-like substances) was open, so we placed a few items onto plates and looked for a beverage station.   The coffee bar was open (or so we thought), and my wife merely asked where one might get a beverage.  The attendant rolled his eyes and appeared impatient that his reverie was disturbed.   We were astounded and disgusted by this person’s lack of even the most basic of manners and discarded our food trays, having now lost our appetite.  Rest assured, she nor I, are prima donnas, expecting the employees to act as servants to our every whim, but likewise, we don’t expect rude behavior as a response to a simple query when a simple direction would have sufficed.   It is interesting to note that on a different occasion, my wife wanted a real coffee (the free stuff at the buffet is watery nonsense) and was willing to pay.  She requested a cappuccino and with another disgusted look by the barista and a dismissive wave of the hand, he informed here the ‘free coffee is over there.'

My wife is a smoker (vapor, to be fair) and after the stresses of the day thus far, needed a release.  Following the false map once again led us to an area that at one time allowed smoking, but no longer did.  Her inquiries to bartenders and wait staff alike again resulted in rude, curt, and abrupt responses, also with no direction, but merely resolution that ‘this was not the area, go somewhere else.'

About that time, a garbled announcement started all passengers were required to obtain the life vest from their cabins and attend the safety meeting.  We had experienced this previously on other lines, as a coordinated effort, broken out into small manageable groups, each that would be assigned a lifeboat.   The address in these previous trips had been clear, short, and to the point.  Not so with MSC.  A large group formed in one of the wrap-around dining areas.  Where we sat, we could neither see nor hear the briefing.   We sat immobilized, unsure of what to do when some folks started to try on their life jackets.   Most just sat there and waited.   No one heard or understood what was being said, if anything, but we did waste 45 minutes doing it.   At some point, people just started to filter out.   The comforting thing was, we realized after the fact we could have merely checked in with our key card and walked away.

We decided to consider the cigar room, as I am an avid cigar enthusiast.  I noticed several things about this so called “well appointed” cigar lounge; it was not a lounge, at least not until a certain time, it was remarkably warm (as was the entire ship – which makes for ‘fun’ formal nights), and there lacked any smoke removal process within that small area.   During my week-long detainment in this gulag of a ship, I noticed that by the time the bar opened (around 5:30) the smoke was so thick, most people could not breathe in there, and your clothes reeked of stale cigar smoke and sweat.   Side note, Alex the bartender and his sole waitress were the singular high points of the entire trip

Our first dinner in the dining room.   I was anticipating this, as previous cruises meant wonderful vistas (ocean through the windows), clean and appropriately defined tables, excellent food, and superior customer service.  I still recall the head waiter’s name and his three kids from our first cruise; he left such a good impression.  “Jeff” on this cruise left an impression as well, but not a positive one.  The food was disgusting.  Ossobuco that was 95% bone, 4% fat, and 1% edible.  I had one and a half bites.  Alfredo that was overcooked pasta and a teaspoon of some sauce that was not Alfredo.  I have pictures.   The table ‘decoration’ was a single, decrepit, and fake orchid that was stained with the food particulate from previous guests.   It epitomized our trip.

For an additional fee, they will feed you edible food; how comforting.  We never saw the maître d; I guess he or she doesn’t visit second seating.   Other in first seating saw him and told him of the same woes.  They were given coupons for the Eataly restaurant and found it to be devoid of value and were glad they didn’t pay.  Not only was most of the food inedible, the portion sizes were ridiculously small.  Even the ladies at our table were asking for second appetizers, only to be met with consternation and disapproval from the waiter.  Oh, no views either, and it was hot as hades in there.

As for “Jeff” the waiter.   Our first night, we had no idea you only get water or bad coffee with dinner, so my wife asked for iced tea.  The waiter rolled his eyes (a common theme) put his hand in my wife’s face, and said “you’ll just have to wait a minute” and walked away without taking our order. I leaped from my chair asking if there was a problem, as I didn’t appreciate his putting his hand in my wife’s face.  He said there was no problem, and walked off.   No matter what we or the other diners at our table asked for if it was out of the ordinary in Jeff’s mind, it was a clear problem.

At the coffee/gelato bar near the cigar room, I attempted to garner my cup of cappuccino, as noted previously, no one ever serviced the cigar lounge and the bar was closed all day.   I was at first ignored by the barista, then pointed toward the waitress also just standing there at the counter, who reluctantly helped me by repeating what I had just ordered (as though the barista did not comprehend it – yes she also spoke English).

Our first night, the door which separates the balconies from the rooms (which I assume opens in the base of multi-room suites for families) was not secured and banged all night.   I attempted to call the service desk, several times, with no response.  The next morning, after getting no sleep because of it, I went to the desk, explained the problem, and they informed me someone would fix it.   No apologies, no empathy, just a conditional response.

We met many others, in fact, everyone we spoke to across the internment agreed to the horrible conditions of this ship and the poor customer service.   We honestly considered leaving the ship and flying home at the first port.  Departure day came, much to our excitement, only to find we were forced to evacuate our rooms by 7 AM, but not allowed to leave the ship until after 10:30 AM.  The only offer of advice during the entire trip from the staff was to “not evaluate the whole ship based upon single episodes (plural) of disappointment”.   That indicates they are aware of the malaise on the part of the crew and the impact to customers, and yet, still do not care.

I sent a typed letter to several key individuals at MSC, including the CEO and to the parent company’s CEO Diego Aponte in Geneva.  The lackadaisical response is one I should have anticipated, given the state of their employees.  I clearly stated each of my concerns, and in every circumstance, I was offered false condolences followed by pathetic excuses.   In fact, the Mr. Richard Sasso, chairman of MSC Cruises immediately negated my entire argument right from the start by stating that he receives many complimentary letters; an indication that I must be somehow responsible, or overly sensitive.   Most of my comments were ignored and presented with some canned response that does not even remotely address my concerns, and the entire letter is dismissive – so much like their staff.

In the end, he offered me a $200 per person cruise credit, should I opt to try them again.    As I explained, I would not take another cruise if they gave me one.  I am less concerned with the wasted money (but I would have accepted a partial refund in principle) as I am with the wasted time.   That was the most significant loss and not something that is replaceable.

I would avoid MSC altogether unless you thrive on constant disappointment.

Good cruise - Excellent cabin steward - HORRIBLE FOOD by gbcondo

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

This was our second cruise in the DIVINA in 2016. For our 50th anniversary we took all our family and a big group of friends, in this ship, and we wanted to repeat it by ourselves; so we did it again in December.  We did get a much better cabin this time and our cabin attendant was one of the bests we ever had.

The food in the Eataly restaurant was excellent, but the food in the Black Crab restaurant was HORRIBLE. At times inedible and the maitre d' did not come by our table once in the 10 days of the cruise. I have been on 26 cruises and the food in this ship is the worse I have ever had.

The embarkation process was atortious. Much worse than our previous cruise with MSC. It took us over 2 hours to get on board, and we had priority boarding.

Otherwise this is a good ship with an excellent crew.

Nice Cruise BUT needs a few adjustments to compete with the big dogs by duckie1210

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean

My family and I sailed on the MSC Divina on 11/19/2016.  Overall, it was a great cruise. We took it mainly because it was dirt cheap for a balcony room over Thanksgiving.  We couldn't pass up that deal even though it was a cruise line we knew nothing about. With that said, we got what we paid for.

Let me start with, this ship is the most beautiful I have ever been on, and I've been on a bunch.  It was like a spa resort and the staff does an amazing job of keeping it clean all the time.  This could not have been easy considering the slobs on board.

Our room was 8262, balcony.  It was clean and spacious enough for four of us. My oldest child stayed with my parents in their balcony room.  We were at the very back of the ship and it smelled of sewage the entire cruise.  Everywhere else was fine, but literally, the minute we got to our doorway, the smell would hit us.  I was beginning to think we were over using our toilet.

The staff was good, some still need to work on their personalities but overall, I have no complaints.

Dining was terrific on the buffet deck for both breakfast and lunch. There were lots of options and I feel like I never waited in line for anything.  I'm not suggesting it wasn't crowded.  Oh it was a zoo for a good 12 hours a day.  I didn't wait in line because manners and waiting your turn seem to be an American trait and this ship was full of foreigners.  The main dining, service was decent. We had an awesome waiter the first night.  He was funny, personable, and seemed to really enjoy what he was doing. Sadly for us, he was switched to another restaurant and his replacement had the personality of a celery stalk. I'm envious of the table that ended up with our original waiter. Also, the children's menu was terrible. I'm convinced that the menu planner must not have children. Pasta with peas? Meatloaf? Grilled chicken with mixed veggie?  Sounds healthy and all but it's a vacation.  This kids want to indulge too. Thankfully, we had a server, not ours, that helped us out and brought the kids whatever they wanted.

Entertainment was decent in the theater but everywhere else was nothing to write home about.  They have a nice big screen out by the pool and unless you are sitting right in front of it, the view is constantly obstructed. It sits way too low.  This would be a problem if they used it for anything other and concerts from the 80's. I think there was a movie shown 3 out of the 7 night, Ride Along 2, Daddy's Home, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Zootopia was supposed to be shown but it never came on.  I guess it made the printed schedule just not the final cut.

The kids program was nice if you could actually find them. They rarely followed the itinerary they handed out and spent 45 min on snack time and 2 hours on dinner.  I dropped my kids off for arts and crafts and ended up watching them do a cooking lesson.  It was completely fine and enjoyable but it was never on the itinerary and I wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

All in all, it was a fine cruise.  If you get a good deal, go.  I would do it again and not expect much.  I think I compared it to other "fun ships" I've been on and didn't realize that the Divina is a much slower pace.  Either way, I didn't have to cook, clean, or do laundry for seven days so I was a happy camper

First and last cruise on MSC by dpough

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

My wife and I are travel agents and we were celebrating our anniversary so we wanted to try a different cruise line to be able to give our clients feedback if they wanted to try MSC, We cruise all the time on Royal, Carnival and Celebrity. The Divina ship is nice. It is a newer ship so the layout is nice. Ship embarkation and disembarkation was smooth and quick. We were upgraded to a balcony because we are agents and happened to get a handicap room, which is the larger of the balcony rooms. Our room attendant was great and kept our room clean all the time. That was the good. Now for the bad. The ship has a very small pool for a ship that has a capacity of over 4300. The exercise room is small and very little equipment for a ship that size also. The entertainment was ok. During the daytime at sea, the entertainment is poor. The first couple of nights, the shows were not that interesting unless you were Italian. I understand that this is a Italian cruise line, however you have to cater to all of the people, not just one group. The last 3 nights, the entertainment was great. Now for the ugly. The food is terrible. It was cold 80 % of the time. I say that because my diet for the week ended up being pizza and that was about the only food that was hot. Our service for the 2 nights we went to the dining room was bad. Our waiter never introduced himself to us, nor interacted with us. We complained and the Maitre D - Geru, took us up to the Yacht club for dinner the last night. The food and service was great there. Overall, we would not pay to go on another cruise with MSC,

Avoid MSC by SheikhYerbooti

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I was on the Divina on the Oct 15th sailing and I can tell you that I felt service was very poor as well. Very bad food overall. Not enough tables in the buffet area on Deck 14. Not enough pool chairs. They don't seem to care about service. Upon arrival we found two dirty shirts and a dirty pair of boxer shorts stuffed behind a life jacket on the top shelf of our closet...I threw them out onto the floor of the hallway. On the last night we found a dirty diaper in one of the elevators. I don't know if this reflects poorly on the ship or it's passengers. Probably the latter. A lot of pushing, shoving, cutting in line and general rudeness from the Europeans. Why MSC bothers stopping in bombed out Ocho Rios is a mystery to me. Even Margaritaville is in bad condition there. I'm avoiding MSC in future.

First time on MSC Divina by rmcginness

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

The MSC Divina is a beautiful ship.  We loved the main show room.  Not a bad seat is the room. No Poles or obstructed areas.  The shows were all very similar,  no variety.

They were short staffed because of the hurricane.  Passengers and crew entered on the at St Maartin and San Juan.

Food was inconsistent.  Three people at our table ordered the same thing, and no two plates looked alike.  When plates were delivered, what was listed on the menu, was not on the plate.

A Good First Cruise Experience by mugzi81

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina

This cruise was my first ever so I did not know what to expect. We ended up stopping in Turks and Caicos instead of Nassau because of the hurricane. Grand Turk is gorgeous! The food and entertainment were okay. The ship itself is beautiful! There was always someone cleaning something on it! Announcements are made in many different languages but I am totally okay with that. The captain was very up front about the weather and our track to remain safe from the hurricane. My favorite bartender was Paul in the Sports Bar. The scavenger hunt was fun. We had lots of laughs.

MSC Divina 3 Weeks after Dry-Dock by misterpoptennis

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

I just arrived home from my 7 Night /6 day cruise on the MSC Divina.  This ship was in dry-dock for the last 3 weeks and was to my dismay was extremely understaffed by several hundred people we were told.  In my review of the cruise I will do as a constructed criticism and most honest review as I possibly can.

First we arrived in Miami from Hollywood, FL and it was great.  Luggage picked up at curbside and then the fun begins.  When you wait in line to present all your documents; you give your passport and paperwork to attendant behind the counter.  A guest card is issued but you have to put money into your account on the cruise on board at an automated machine before 2300 or 11pm that day the latest.  Mind you they only have 4 such machines on the ship for 4000 guests.  We are then given a number to be called before we arrive on the cruise.  We wait patiently for about 1 hour before our name is called and then we proceeded to the ramp to board the ship.

We arrived on the deck 5 and they tell you to follow the other people and already you are completely lost.  You should be given a map once you arrive on the cruise ship and not have to ask for a map.  Once we asked several crew people where the food is; we make our way up to deck 14 for the buffet.  The buffet on 14th floor is layed out very haphazardly.  There is no rhyme or reason where they put different stations.  The beverages are in the middle and desserts are in different areas also.  My GF and I become separated and already not even on the cruise an hour we lose each other.  It was a total mad house and guests are going every which way.  Total confusion and chaos at the buffet!!

Suggestion:  Beverage Station might be placed when you walk in to the buffet and not placed in the middle.   Lets say we just want a beverage and not food like … morning coffee, juice you can get it quickly and come back later for breakfast or any other meal.

After we find each other we try to find a table before the food become’s cold.  I will say the food is plentiful and tastes very good.  The pizza is the best I ever had on a cruise.  They have whole wheat, pepperoni, olives and pesto and regular cheese.   It is my favorite thin crust.  Pizza is available 20 hours a day and good and fresh and hot.   A+++++++++++++ on the pizza.

Our rooms are available right away and I will say we were very impressed in the size of the room but dismayed by the lack of drawers to put your stuff away.  We had 2 night stands with small drawers and 6 drawers in the closet and yes good closets to hang thing up and hangers supplied.  But with 2 adults that is not nearly enough drawers to put all your stuff away.  In the room is a nice couch and that became my storage area.  .  Our Stewards who handled our room 9119 was a top of their game.  The both stewards for am and pm did a fine job keeping our beds made and our rooms cleanned and maintained. A++++++++++++++ The balcony was great and nice but with a partial obstruction of the life boats below.  We were on the 9th floor and the life boats were on the 6th floor.   All the pools on the ship are closed since the ship is registered in Panama and a US inspector has to certify that pools are clean.  So the only pool that was open was in the back of the ship.  More about the pools later….

The safety drill is next at 430pm and that is terrible.  They check each key card and if you forget your card you go and retrieve it.  We were on the 9th floor and had to go down to the 6 floor for this drill that is so disorganized and mass confusion  with all the 6 different languages.  We never knew when it was started and ended.

At 6 pm was our 1st seating for dinner and that was terrible.  Apparently since the storm Matthew almost disrupted the cruise; and 350 crew members never made it back on the ship and it showed in the kitchen staff.  We received all our food by 830pm over 2.5 hours later.   The wait staff we were told this was there first day on the ship and it showed.   The second seating at 8pm never made it to dinner until 9pm.  We are the guests and if you cannot operate at 100% then do cancel the cruise or compensate the guests.   We finally finished dinner and went to the show.

Entertainment: The shows were some the best shows I have ever seen on any cruise line.  We have sailed on NCL, Carnival, and Celebrity.  The dancers were top notch with great costumes and a beautiful theater and sound system.  The 4-D Cinema room was also closed or not working during my cruise.  That is not right.   Tyrone ran the trivia game and never had any prizes for the winners.  Very unprofessional and he said when you see him and he may give you a prize.

The swimming pools: were great but way too crowded on sea days.  Children should have their own pool and the Adults should have their own area also with a pool and hot tubs.  The covered inside pool was great but a suggestion to put lounge chairs in there so people can relax and not have tables with chairs.   That area should be a serenity pool area for adults over 18 years of age.   The covered slide you have is only for teens and not adults.  WHY???  Why can’t the adults have a quiet area that is free!!!

Francisco; Head of Food and Beverage department is the most unprofessional officer we have ever met.  We had a meet and great for Cruise Critic and he and fellow officers attended to answers questions and problems pertaining to their areas.   Francisco went around the room but started with the people in Tux’s (whom came late) and yacht club members and avoided the regular people.  But when my GF cornered him and asked about the problems in the restaurant the night before to told us to take our concerns to reception and he did not want to be bothered with us.  He wanted to give a us a sad story why our food took 2.5 hours.  An officer of a department should have been a more capable person to listen to our concerns and worked out a solution and not passed the buck to another department. He wanted to spend time with his other officers and friends and not speak to the public.

Just a suggestion when you serve a baked apple for breakfast (It is supposed to be hot).  When my GF sent it back to heat it up; all they did was heat the plate.  And when my GF ordered lox and bagel and the bagel was served ice cold and rock hard!!  Common sense.

Also we went to the two specialty restaurants’ and we were surprised that when we asked for ice tea with dinner they said no and also with dessert no coffee or tea.  Weird we are paying extra and we are getting less.  Makes no sense to me.

Had a special event for Cruise Critic people and it was presented by Asst Director Miguel.   Apparently MSC follows what is written on Cruise Critic and takes value in what is written.  I want to say Miguel is one of the most professional people I have ever encountered on a cruise and I give an A+++++++++++ merit when due.  I explained to him my concerns and he solved and soothes my concerns and really listened to us.

Overall with the restaurant problems and short of staff; we had a wonderful time and will recommend this cruise. A++

PSS…  Hopefully in time they will work out the quirks to do well in the future!!!!

1st Time on MSC by MSC1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Divina / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Was looking for an interesting cruise. Had heard of MSC from others who used them overseas.  Looked at over five websites on peoples opinions of this one ship currently operating in the US. They offer four levels of service  of service. I chose the Fantastica Experience Level.  From various websites i chose a extra large balcony that did not cost any additional fees. Just before departing I received an email for an upgrade package to the highest level, the MSC Yacht Club Level. It cost a  lot  less than the higher levels found on NCL , Princess and Royal Caribbean. And it also not at the same level of of those mentioned above.  I hate to say but when comparing their online cost as compared to the upgrade  I would not pay full boat up front. The majority of those i met echoed the same sentiment.

The service  was great. Unlimited drinks while in the designated yacht club area.

Language issue. Most staff  tried to converse in English, but when had a hard time when you asked complicated questions that they had a hard time translating back to you.  I speak a second language and most of the staff really spoke at a very basic level. We had a designated restaurant for meals. The meals were good, but the portions were small.  They need to address meals more for US personnel.

By the third night most people decided it was best to order a meal to the room so they could get a more american flare.  They served prawns one night with oysters.  Most of the people had no idea how to eat prawns and the other half were not into oysters, nor the different cold soup or tar tar (cold meat) for a meal.  The wait staff was excellent,  MSC wants to move into the US Market and they need to address US food.  Liked the pizza, being from the Midwest I had expectations  of pizza with various toppings, Mainly they had a slight variation of cheeses pizzas. One day I asked for a cheeseburger and the staff was literally at a loss!

The Yacht club rooms were nice but small. They talk about the tub in the bathroom. It is short but deep. We used the shower. They did have hot water all the time. They tried to have a US type breakfast by the pool. I had better at Marriott Hotels as it was the same breakfast with a few small items on the side.

I am a milk drinker and that was something to get. I had to ask for pillows from sheet that I had read about about that no one mentioned when i got to the room. They do have a walk in closet. very small. Bring extra hangers. Their drawers  were about 12 inches wide and about 16 inches in depth. Their is extra space on a mirror just inside the door. If you did not look and see the slot to pull a side of the mirror open you would not know that you had an additional 6 shelves.  I had told this to others who never realized the extra shelf space after three days. The bed was great. The mini bar was so so. Made sure that I made a formal request of what I wanted in the mini bar and they accommodated.

When I arrived at the port I had to find the Yacht Club entrance. Make sure you take a PASSPORT!! They did take us up to a waiting room. A glass of Sparking Wine was offered along with (hate to say) hard cookies and treats.  A few couple that came in with us asked for soda and they said we do not have any. Water was then made available. We went through security quickly and to our rooms. I did purchase soda and coffee coupons that could be used through out the ship. They were worth it. The pool area outside the yacht club was usually standing room only. The drink prices outside the club were not that bad. We had a small pool. 8 people and you were crowded. We had two two people hot tubs. They said for four. Had to be for very small people. One thing I will say it does not pay to have kids in the club. The couple of families who had kids found that they spent more time outside the club than in it and that the kids after one meal in the designated restaurant wanted to eat at other places on the ship. The shows were excellent. The seating in the main theater is strange. If you sit in the stadium type seats the seat in front of you is very close.  if you go to the floor with the closet seats to the stage you get about a foot+ more space. I would also say that the average age in the Club was about 55. And Around  the ship in general 30 to 50 outside the club.

Mostly everything shuts down at 10:00PM. They start closing the pools with covers. They do try to have things going most of the evening. They had nice outside movies but hardly anywhere to sit. The buffet area was small, in comparison to other cruise lines I have sailed on. MSC is bringing a new cruise ship in in 2017 and they state that it would address alot of concerns voiced on the

Divina. They will have to really up it game to get people to pay for the Yacht Club.

They really have to increase wit staff if your using the main dining room. I heard from numerous (over 15 people) about cold food, lack of wait staff, not having enough of a menu item to go around, and they really need to address US tastes .
