Review summary

Will never book Holland again. Everything was an up charge. Entertainment was boring and gaps between. Food was bland, wouldn’t eat anything twice. Food wasn’t available all day without paying extra.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
They charge a $20 “corking fee” per each allowed bottle of champagne and wine

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Food was bland, 7 days of eating and maybe one meal I would eat again

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
Hot tubs were so small your knees are at your chest. Kept breaking down

Entertainment

1 out of 5
Boring. Comedian wasn’t good and that was the best entertainment. In a tiny venue, get there very early

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Courteous but ultimately useless to make anything better. TV didn’t work in the room for 2 days. After talking to customer service, room attendant and an officer.

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Walk walk walk.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Room was 4168, had a double sized balcony for no extra charge

Ship tip

Bring something to do and your wallet! Everything costs extra, most food is an extra charge

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

4 out of 5

Cruise Puget Sound

5 out of 5
Lots of whales and they were breaching

CRUISE STEPHENS PASSAGE

3 out of 5

Juneau, Alaska

3 out of 5
Tourist trap

Cruise Glacier Bay

5 out of 5
Go outside, hearing the calving is amazing

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

1 out of 5
Nothing but a tourist trap

Sitka, Alaska

4 out of 5
Favorite town, don’t waste money on a Zodiac trip, just a 3 hour bumpy, cold, wet and uncomfortable ride.

Ketchikan, Alaska

4 out of 5
The salmon have already spawned and are all dead and dying when we were there, a big turn off for my girlfriend

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Efficient

It is funny how perceptions can be so different. I’ve been on many cruises and Eurodam to Alaska was the best. I felt for the very reasonable price I was getting a premium experience. But I like a more quiet and peaceful cruise experience. You should really look at Royal Caribbean or Carnival next time, but I can promise you the food won’t be better! Tamarind, Canaletto, and Pinnacle Grill was some of the best food I’ve ever had on a ship. Good luck with your future cruises!

Oops sorry 😞 thanks

Sounds like more research before the cruise would have helped you make a better decision and know what to expect.

Isn’t HAL well known for being more “quiet” than some other cruise lines? Alaskan cruises are surely more about the itinerary anyway, hopefully you enjoyed most of that. Focus on upselling seems to be a common complaint across the cruise lines just now unfortunately.

Sorry this cruise didn’t meet your expectations.

Have you ever been on a cruise before?

Thanks for your review. Alaska is an amazing place and all about the scenery and wildlife. I see Straight Point is one of our favorite ports since it is not commercialized and has excellent whale watching. If you don’t want to pay an up charge for anything, I suggest trying Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Viking, Oceania or Silversea Cruises. Just be prepared to bay 3-10+ times what Holland America charges.

Alaskan cruises are "boring" compared to other itineraries because they are geared toward an older demographic. You were charged a corkage fee for opening bottles in a restaurant venue. You have to ask your room steward for a bottle opener and glasses and open it in your own room to avoid the fee. I'm sorry you were not informed beforehand so you had better expectations.
