We celebrate the best cruise lines and ships annually as part of our Member Choice Awards. For 2024, we’ve added two additional categories, Best Cruise Ports and Best Crise Line Private Destination. These winners are based on review data collected from our cruise community reviews of cruises taken during the 2023 calendar year. We celebrate the pinnacle of excellence in destinations around the globe based on cruisers' real feedback of their experience ashore, from the sun-kissed shores of the Caribbean to the historic harbors of Europe, and all the cruise ports worldwide that represent the epitome of adventure, discovery, and cultural immersion. Of the thousands of cruise ports worldwide, being named a cruiser favorite is no easy feat.

The Best Cruise Ports and Best Cruise Line Private Destinations represent a diverse group of ports that have shown cruisers a day they won’t soon forget. We honor the ports that captivate travelers with their beauty, charm, and unparalleled hospitality. Below, we award the highest-regarded ports based on review data from our Cruise Community.

We went on the Whitepass railroad and got lots of great photos and videos. We got really lucky with the weather that day, was beautiful. Would love to return here one day.”

For second through tenth place, various port destinations welcomed guests and delivered a great experience for cruisers to enjoy their time. Interestingly, of the top 10 highest-rated ports, three are Alaskan ports of call. In 2023, this growing cruise destination welcomed a record 1.65M passengers, a more than 24% increase from 2019, the second highest in the region’s history.

Given the sheer number of ships sailing the Caribbean seasonally and year-round, it’s unsurprising that five of the highest-rated ports can be found in this region. Coming in second, Curacao is part of the famed ABC islands. Cruisers are drawn to its colorful colonial architecture, pristine beaches, and rich cultural heritage. The island's vibrant capital, Willemstad, boasts UNESCO World Heritage status, featuring picturesque pastel-colored buildings lining its waterfront. With excellent diving and snorkeling spots, diverse culinary offerings, and friendly locals, Curacao offers cruisers an immersive Caribbean experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Mahogany Bay, Roatan, enchants cruisers for its stunning turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and lush tropical surroundings. The port's convenient location offers easy access to various shore excursions, including snorkeling, ziplining through the rainforest, and interacting with local wildlife. With its welcoming atmosphere and diverse array of activities, Mahogany Bay provides cruisers with an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Caribbean.

Barcelona is the highest-ranked European port and number three on the overall best list. Cruisers are captivated by Barcelona for its blend of historic charm, architectural marvels, and vibrant cultural scene. The city's iconic landmarks, such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, designed by Antoni Gaudí, offer travelers a glimpse into its unique artistic heritage. Barcelona's bustling streets, delectable cuisine, and Mediterranean ambiance make it a cherished port of call for cruise enthusiasts seeking a rich tapestry of experiences.

Rounding out the top ten in this tight race is Bar Harbor, Maine. This picturesque harbor town offers visitors breathtaking views of coastal Maine and access to the town's charming shops and restaurants.

Cruises to Bar Harbor, Maine

The honorable mention of Glacier Bay and Alaska’s Inside Passage as cruise guests ranked these two sailing areas very high, but technically, they aren’t a port of call. Many Alaska voyages offer scenic cruise days in these areas, where guests typically do not get off the ship. With three Alaska ports making the top 10 list and the very highly rated cruising region, Alaska offers guests immense satisfaction with the destination. From the unspoiled natural beauty to abundant wildlife and rich cultural history, a cruise to Alaska is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.

Best Cruise Line Private Island:

Booking a cruise itinerary that includes a cruise line's private island offers travelers the exclusive opportunity to experience a secluded paradise with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters away from the hustle and bustle of traditional ports of call. Castaway Cay is taking top honors for 2024, which is included on Disney Cruise Line’s Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries. This beach day offers an array of enriching experiences tailored to guests of all ages, from thrilling water slides and snorkeling adventures to serene bike rides along scenic trails. With its idyllic scenery and diverse attractions, Castaway Cay embodies the essence of Disney magic, creating unforgettable memories for families and visitors alike.

What our Members have to say about Castaway Cay:

Skojekrug: “This stop is awesome. It is a "true" Bahamian experience with natural vegetation and paths tucked in. The staff housing is not visible, and the available activities are sure to tire even the most active by day's end. The adult-only beach is secluded and tranquil with great drink service and lunch close by.”

Liveforvaca: “Loved the private island! So easy to get off the ship and relax. It is nice to know that it is set up for everyone on board to have a chair at the beach. Also, loved that the food was included. You didn't feel like you had to get back to the ship to eat like at a normal port. It was like they moved the ship kitchen off onto the island for the day :)”

Not to be outdone, Perfect Day at CocoCay, one of Royal Caribbean’s private island experiences (and now a stop on select Celebrity Cruises Caribbean voyages), ranks second of cruisers' favorite private island experiences. Guests can opt to spend the day on powdery sand beaches or choose from a plentiful selection of watersports, snorkeling, sailing, and more. For thrill-seekers, a zip line, several waterslides, and a hot air balloon are available to satisfy your cravings. Whether you are looking for action-packed or relaxed and chill, Perfect Day CocoCay has it all and more!
