This cruise is not relaxing like a Caribbean cruise. The weather can be (and was) brutally hot at times. But it is worth it from the perspectives of history (ancient) on the East Coast, and history (recent) on the West Coast. You get a real education and appreciation for what you have in the US as well as why many people from Africa risk it all to get to Europe and the US. In many ports, you have to look beyond the litter, rundown conditions, and poor economics to see the friendlieness of the people. Holland America did a very good job of mixing the ports up so that you see (I think) the full spectrum of Africa. One trip won't show you everything but the sheer variety of people, cultures, languages, food, and history is overwhelming.

Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Main dining room was pretty good. Lido was good but not as good as previous cruises. Much of the food was overcooked. That said, it still was very good. Specialty nights in the Pinnacle (chef's dinner, wine steward dinner, and others) were great. They have cut back a bit (probably to get rid of their debt) but it still was very good
Onboard Activities
4 out of 5
Less to do than before Covid. Did use the fitness center (which is very good and not very crowded).
Entertainment
4 out of 5
Have to give it just a good. Lots of one peson shows. Another area of cutbacks. Some were very entertaining others not so much.
Children's Programs

Service and Staff

Service was beyond expectations. We had a Neptune suite so we were able to use the Pinnacle breakfast option. By the second day, they knew us by sight. Lido service was also very good.
Ship Quality

Ship was clean but beginning to show some wear. Time for a refit.
Cabin / Stateroom

Very comfortable and ample size (but that is what you pay for in a Neptune Suite)
Just a nice flat couple of hours. Entertained by the murals and sights along the banks. A little tension since we transitted during the conflict in Isreal
Have dinner at the rooftop restaurant and listen to the call to prayer. Makes it worthwhile just for that. Interesting city. Doesn't look safe but it is. Very friendly residents.
You really don't get to Madagascar proper on the excursions. The trip to the lemur reserve was fantastic. Rest of the excursions are mostly on the beach.
You have to like Cape Town. Modern, upscale, great coastline. Take the hop on hop off bus for a 2 hour quick loop. Had dinner at La Columbe (worth the price)
Another developing country with a lot of optimism but not much else. Primarily known for it's river eco-tourism which you really can't taste in a half day stay
Old San Juan is always nice. Area is walkable. There were 4 other cruise ships in town, but we still were able to find a little restaurant that wasn't crowded.
