Review summary

We loved Scandinavian and Iceland so much we are planning our next cruise to come back to Norway in the winter. Can’t wait!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We flew in the day of embarkation (I know, risky). We went right from the airport to our stateroom with ease.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We ate mostly in the World Cafe. The selection was great! The food was always hot and ready to eat. We also ate in The Restaurant and Manfredi’s.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We used the Fitness Center and Spa. They both had a good selection of equipment.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We mainly listened to Allen and his guitar in the Explorer’s Lounge. So relaxing and enjoyable.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Service was excellent! Our room attendants were great. The staff in the Cafe quickly learned our names and preferences.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
You could get anywhere on the ship quickly. We could take an elevator or the stairs, depending on how many decks we were going. I like that all the Viking Ocean ships are set up in a similar manner. We were on the Viking Star last year and felt comfortable right away on the Viking Venus.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was well-appointed and spacious. We could always relax in our room instead of in the common areas of the ship. The furnishings were all in good shape and not worn. The cabin was always clean.

Ship tip

Watch Port Talk On Demand! You don’t have to watch it live at 4:30 each day. And you do have to Watch Port Talks! They are always informative.

Ports of call

Stockholm, Sweden

4 out of 5
Our excursion was the Vasa Museum and Stockholm by Boat. Since we went right from the airport, we didn’t have additional time to explore the city.

Mariehamn, Finland

5 out of 5
One of our favorite stops! We went on the Island Hopping excursion. Visiting our captain’s own island gave us a great insight into Finnish life.

Cruise Swedish Archipelago

3 out of 5
Relaxing day at sea!

Gdansk (Danzig), Poland

5 out of 5
Here is where Viking shines! There was a warehouse fire in the port of Gdańsk so we were re-rerouted to Gdynia. Everything was seamless, from the docking to the excursions. We visited Malbork Castle and the city of Gdańsk. It’s always fascinating and uplifting to see how countries recovered after WW2.

Ronne, Bornholm, Denmark

5 out of 5
We went on the Scenic Bornholm excursion. Our guide was a a local and it was nice hearing about local life.

Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany

5 out of 5
Another area that Viking came out on top! Most of the ship took the train to Berlin. The transportation was effortless. There is so much to see and so much recent history, A very full day!

Copenhagen, Denmark

5 out of 5
We did the included tour of Copenhagen by Foot. We saw lots of fun sites and of course, the Little Mermaid. It’s interesting to listen to the history during WW2 and the current monarchy.

Aalborg, Denmark

5 out of 5
We went on the excursion West Coast & Rubjerg Lighthouse. Our tour guide made it interesting and fun. All of the Scandinavian countries are vying for the title of Happiest Country! It shows!

Oslo, Norway

4 out of 5
Two days in Oslo. The first day we went on the excursion Oslo by Sea. The first tour was so-so. Our guide was not very effective. The second day was Oslo Highlights & Vigeland Park. This was fascinating, even in the rain (one of few rainy days). The Park was amazing.

Stavanger, Norway

5 out of 5
We went on the Pulpit Rock Cruise. Just cruising thru the fjord was wonderful. Our guide gave us a lot of interesting information about life in Norway.

Eidfjord, Norway

5 out of 5
This was actually Flåm. Amazing how such a small community can manage so many tourists pouring in by ship and train. We took the Panoramic Half-Day Railway tour. Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially stopping at the waterfall twice!

Bergen, Norway

5 out of 5
Three days here. We did the Panoramic Bergen and Ascent of Mt. Ulriken excursions. Lots of good information and beautiful views! Some of our best fish and chips from the fish market!

Flaam, Norway

5 out of 5
Second time in Flåm. We did the Panoramic Fjords by Boat. Loved cruising thru the fjord.

Alesund, Norway

5 out of 5
Our only excursion on a RIB (Alesund Sea Safari by RIB). We were out in the open sea and it was exhilarating!

Geiranger, Norway

5 out of 5
We went on the excursion Eagle’s Bend Overlook & Panoramic Drive. Loved the sightseeing and views. We went from one side of the fjord to the other.

Torshavn, Faroe Islands

4 out of 5
Our excursion was The Island of Vagar. The Faroe Islands have an amazing history.

Seydisfjordur, Iceland

4 out of 5
Small community making the most of cruise ship visits. Our excursion, Seydisfjordur on Foot and Viking Festival was fun.

Akureyri, Iceland

5 out of 5
Another small community. Our excursion of Northern Iceland’s Natural Treasures showed us some of the beautiful areas of Iceland.

Isafjordur, Iceland Did not visit port

I wasn’t feeling well so we decided to skip the include tour we had signed up for.

Reykjavik, Iceland

5 out of 5
The “piece de resistance” of our cruise! More wonderful natural sites! Amazing to see how they are using geothermal energy and recycling the by-products. It make me feel optimistic about our environment.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easy to get from the ship to the bus to the airport (with commentary from our bus crew).

What a wonderful itinerary. Thanks for sharing your cruise. We did the Search of Northern Lights in 2022 and loved it. It is definitely a Winter Cruise!
