Review summary

Family of 5 with younger teenagers. We've loved Royal Caribbean for years, and the scenery, ship, and activities did not disappoint. Alaska is an amazing place, and we'll definitely be back. The benefit of being on a large ship like Quantum was that they constantly had activities for all of us to enjoy. From trivia to rock climbing to bumper cars to laser tag to pickle ball, there was always something to do. While the ship was full, it rarely seemed overly crowded, and we were able to avoid the lines for the most part. Beautiful, sunny weather almost every day, with gorgeous, snow-capped mountains everywhere. We would definitely take this cruise again.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Quick, minimal lines. Had early time (11 am) and was on the ship not long after 12.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
MDR food and service was great. Consistently good food served in timely manner. Would like to see more variety in menu, but still was very good. Windjammer food quality was probably the best I've had on a cruise in 5 sailings.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
So many activities for the kids and adults. Rock climbing, pickle ball, laser tag, roller skating, and the list goes on. Always something to keep us busy.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The shows on Quantum were lacking. While the comedian was great, the other shows just consisted of singing, which wasn't really up to par. The Sequins & Feathers burlesque show doesn't really fit with a family cruise, and the StarWater performance was very hard to understand. I know it was to showcase the capabilities of the 270 entertainment space, but the show was extremely weird and didn't make sense. We've loved the Broadway shows on other RC ships, and I really wish they would continue that with Quantum.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
13 yr old hung out in the teen area quite a bit. 11 year old went to the kids area a couple times, but mostly hung out with the rest of us.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Overall, staff were very helpful, from waiters to room steward to Guest Services staff. We did have one major issue with the NorthStar supervisor. Ship couldn't dock in Skagway due to rockslide at the port (I know this wasn't RC's fault). They decided to give us an extended day of cruising the Endicott Arm. We were scheduled to have a complimentary spot in the NorthStar observation pod during this time. We confirmed our reservation time with Guest Services, and when our time came, staff advised they had bumped us for someone else. We explained we had already confirmed our time slot, but they refused to budge. A manager arrived and told us there were 4 empty spots on the next ride, but we could only go if we paid $69 per person. We explained that we already had free reservations for this time slot, and he said he would rather the pod go up with only 8 guests instead of filling the last 4 spots with our family for free. This was incredibly rude and showed us that Royal Caribbean only cares about money. So the NorthStar lifted up with 4 open spaces while we watched from below. Terrible customer service.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Great layout. Megaship with no shortage of activities.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Balcony cabin was great. Was probably the first time ever on a cruise that I had more than enough space in drawers/compartments for all my clothes. Steward did a great job of tending to our needs.

Ship tip

Make reservations for free slots for iFly and North Star as soon as you get on, as they fill up fast (within an hour at least)

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

city was a little dirty, but overall a nice visit. We had one extra day before and one after.

Sitka, Alaska

4 out of 5
Beautiful city and loved walking around downtown. Line for the town shuttle was long (approx 45 minutes) Raptor Center was not worth the hype, or the admission.

Skagway, Alaska Did not visit port

Rock slide at dock (not Royal's fault)

CRUISE ENDICOTT ARM & DAWES GLACIER

Had extra time here, so visited Mendenhall Glacier in the AM, and Alaska Humback Adventures excursion in the afternoon. Amazing place. Had lunch at The Hangar. Great seafood.

Victoria, British Columbia

Was ok. Stepped off the boat into a Pride Festival. Not the best place for kids. Downtown was pretty, and we booked a Ghost Tour thru an outside website. Cool experience.

Disembarkation

Quick. Minimal lines.

That was an unfortunate incident. Glad you were able to still enjoy yourself.

Did you talk to guest services about the Northstar issue? I had an issue in sitka with a excursion and the refunded my full amount, so I don't think they are just about money. He was being a jerk.

Same thing happen to us with the North Star but they said that it was rescheduled for the next day. We had a shore excursion and couldn’t make it. We were out of luck too. Glad you enjoyed it. Lots of stuff to do on that ship.
