Review summary

Last cruise of the season but it felt like it was a training cruise for the crew, many gave poor directions to get around the ship early on. Been on several cruise lines and several Norwegian ships - the Sun is the worst I've been on

Embarkation

2 out of 5
Typical, except couldn't even drop my bag off in my cabin until almost time to leave port. Never had that before; hope to never have that again. Everybody bumping suitcases behind them in aisleways, hallways, buffet, bars - very difficult to get around for several hours.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
Starting to show their age. Windows so dirty, couldn't see out of them. Buffet was really bad-very limited selections, more towards the taste of the crew than passengers. Specialty restaurants have had the same menus for years.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Very limited activities - the usual trivia games, an oil painting class 4 different days

Entertainment

2 out of 5
A little bit less than typical cruise ship. Entertainment director trying way too hard

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Room Steward was very good. Wait staff was hit or miss, all ship's officers appeared arrogant - wouldn't acknowledge passengers

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
Whoever designed the Sun must have been on some good drugs - put some specialty restaurants on highest deck, One main dining on deck 5 put you had to go to deck six/seven to get to it.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Bed was originally arranged so you couldn't look out the window, asked steward to re-arrange which he kindly did. But very dirty window, difficult to see out. poor heating/cooling - this was a late October Alaska cruise - cabin so hot, when I was in my cabin I had to strip down to skivvies to get halfway comfortable. I use a cane - my cabin was located on Deck 6a - meaning I had to go up and down a flight of stairs to get to it EVERY time-no elevator reached this deck!

Ship tip

DON'T GO!!!

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

4 out of 5
It's Seattle, great coffee

Sitka, Alaska

3 out of 5
All the Alaskan ports are the same - small towns, sorta like Gatlinburg or Myrtle Beach - t-shirt shops and tanzanite jewelry. Excursions - each port is pretty much the same, watch whales, lumberjack show, pan for gold, helicopter to glacier, totem poles and indigenous people interface and eat "authentic" Alaskan food - but the scenary is excellent

Cruise Glacier Bay

4 out of 5
Go soon, 'cause it's shrinking fast

Skagway, Alaska

2 out of 5
See review above for Sitka

Juneau, Alaska

3 out of 5
Little bit better than the other ports but much the same as far as excursions, shopping, eating and the like

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

2 out of 5
This seems like it was built for cruise ship passengers. Much the same as the others but smaller and more limited

KETCHIKAN (WARD COVE), ALASKA

2 out of 5

Victoria, British Columbia

4 out of 5
This is the best stop for shopping and eating ashore

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
The Port Valet system is wonderful. Leave bags outside cabin and don't touch them again until your home airport. WOW!!!
