Review summary

We had good weather which made the excursions great. Norwegian had a lot of activities on Sea days and kept us busy. The food was wonderful and there was never a wait at restaurants or bars. As indicated above, the Sun is a significantly smaller ship than others. We did this same cruise in 2021 on a bigger Norwegian ship and hit a cyclone coming back and never felt the waves. This ship moved a lot more even without a storm. The buffet was great but didn't mix up the food choices during the cruise. We couldn't get a "regular" spot and wait staff at the complementary restaurants and ended up being moved around. This is OK, but I do like other cruise lines that make dining more personal. Don't worry about dressing up. My wife always dresses up for dinner, but very few people did. My wife has a walker and we found it was harder to get around on this boat as the elevators were small and walkways narrow in the buffet and other places. I think this is just a problem with the fact that the boat is smaller than others.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was great in complimentary and specialty restaurants. Norwegian doesnt do as well as some cruise ships in offering regular dining times if requested.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
dancing, bingo painting were all fun. The paint classes did the same painting each sea day which was a little odd.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Good music, comedy and an excellent magic team.

Ship Quality

The sun is a much smaller boat than we were used to. The elevators were small and the walkways through the buffet were too small during busy times. Everything was clean and well maintained.

Ship tip

I am not sure the sun is a good choice for people with wheelchairs or walkers. They didnt fit into the room, elevators and buffet. The ship was smaller and we could feel the sea swells which we have never felt before on other Norwegian boats.

Glad to read about the experience of a fellow cruiser on this cruise; sounds like you had a wonderful time, for the most part. I, too, really felt the swells, so much so that I spent most of the first sea day in my room with major seasickness! Hopefully, that didn't happen to you at all!

As JimOhio says NCL offers freestyle dining concept, which I personally love, however MDRs are available to book along with speciality dining months in advance of the cruise so in future you could always book the same restaurant at the same time every day if you really wanted to do that. Glad you enjoyed your cruise anyway!

Could you share what excursions you did in Alaska? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing this review. You do know that Norwegian Cruise Lines actually advertises Freestyle Dining as a positive thing. To cruise a cruise line that does such a thing, then ding them for not having enough dining structure is silly.
