Review summary

The South American Cruise from San Antonio to Miami has a great itinerary. We visited Chili, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, traveled through the Panama Canal, Columbia before arriving in Miami. The staff on the ship is exceptional and provide great service. The ship is smaller and somewhat intimate. We loved this cruise.

Embarkation

One of the smoothest that I have encountered. Not much of a terminal but well ran.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food in the main dining room was very good, nice selection and well prepared with average portions. Ate ate Cagney's and the steaks are great. Ate at the Brazilian restaurant and it was very good. Unfortunately the food at the buffet was average. Was disappointed that on the Sun there is not a 24 hour restaurant. The closest thing is the sports bar but they only serve from 5:30pm until 5:30am. What they offer is good bar type food; wish it would have been available at lunch.

Windjammer Bar

4 out of 5

Spent a lot of evenings in this bar listening to the guitarist and pianist. Easy listening music while be waited on by a great staff and drinking yummy drinks. Unfortunately several of the patrons liked talking more than listening so at times it was hard to enjoy the entertainment.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
The pool area was always clean and busy. We did trivia, sudoku challenges, lectures, and crafts, all were fun.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The stage shows included a juggler, a magician, a professional singer, and various cast shows. In all honesty I enjoyed the cast shows more than the pros.

Stardust Lounge

3 out of 5

Of all the theaters on NCL ships this is my least favorite. Not as much slope to the seating area so can be hard to see from some seats.

Children's Programs

Didn't use

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The waiters are all great. They are attentive and personable. The bar waiters come around very often so it is easy to get drinks.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship is easy to get around on. The staff could always be seen cleaning and painting. They cleaning staff were never obtrusive.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The room was large and very clean. Loved the balcony.

Ship tip

Be sure to read the "Freestyle Daily" to know all that is going on each day

Ports of call

San Antonio, Chile

All we did was travel from Santiago straight to the port so we never actually did anything here.

Coquimbo (La Serena), Chile

Did a tour of the city (not a lot there) and then on to La Serena. Nice sites but nothing spectacular.

Arica, Chile

Took an independent tour, Visited El Morro, drove through the city, the petroglyphs, the valley. All were very interesting

Callao (Lima), Peru

5 out of 5
Took a ship tour to Lima. Saw the Cathedral, the residence of the longest family owned home, a convent, and Los Flores. An extremely interesting tour.

Salaverry (Trujillo), Peru

Took a tour to Chan Chan. Interesting commentary on the way. Had mixed feelings about Chan Chan, some of the restoration was reproduction and some original but unclear how much of each. Didn't see the portion that was featured in the brochure. We did visit an temple that was two centuries older that was all original and very interesting.

Manta, Ecuador

Visited a Tagua factory, a textile factory, saw Panama hats being made, and a shopping area. All were interesting.

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

We had visited this port before so we spent most of the day on the ship relaxing.

Panama Canal Transit

Loved the on board historian that gave facts throughout the crossing.

Cartagena, Colombia

All we did here was get of the ship and go to the air port. However in the past we have visited several of the sites and enjoyed them all.
