It was an average cruise. by JamesC4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

My overall impression of the ship was that it was adequate, but not lavish. The ship was in fairly good shape, with the exception of losing power during a port of call. Most passengers were on land at the time and never knew. The wind dynamics of the ship didn't prevent cigarette smoke from adjoining and surrounding rooms to enter the private balcony of my stateroom. This was a big disappointment as a non-smoker because when one is out at sea it's not expected to have to smell cigarette smoke while trying to relax on the private balcony. There were many times that I had to retreat to my stateroom as a result. The neighbors on one side smoked constantly.

A nice time by BevB1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was nice, as far as the interior goes, but again, the food in the main dining rooms were just ok. Its a shame that you have to pay extra to get a better meal. The cost of buying picutes on board of $12.00 is too much, if they sold them a half the price they would sell alot more. (we didn't buy any, for that reason) It seems that ships are charging for more and more these days, making curising not such a good deal. The excursions could be a lot lower also. iT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE JUST BEING TAKING ADVANTAGE OF, with all of the up charges.

Great Cruise by CharleneT1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was large and very nice. It had very good restaraunts, the Versillas and the Agua were very good. The evening meals in both were very good. We ate at Cagney's one evening. It was good, but I don't think it was as good as the East Meets West steakhouse on the Sun. Just not as elegant. The ports were very good. We did the mini-sub in Cobo San Lucas. It was a very good excursion. I got some excellent pictures of the colorful fish and the beautiful area. At Mazatlan, we took the excursion to the Shrimp Fest. We were not impressed with that one. In fact we were disappointed because it was too expensive for what we got. I do not recommend that one, although, some on the tour thought it was good. Our last stop was in Puerto Vallarta. We got a city tour from an operator just outside where we got off the ship. It was the highlight of our trip. Our tour guide, Hector Almeida, was so knowledgeable and his love of the city was so evident. It made it very personal. We learned a lot that day about mexico and the city from him. Debarkation was not a good experience, but the ship had arrived a little late into LA port, so everyone was trying to get off at the same time, which was a nightmare. This was overall a wonderful trip on the NCL Star. The crew was exceptional and so friendly.

Great service by JanetL7

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was beautifully appointed with eclectic design. The service was great and the food was presented excellently. The Versailles restaurant had a waiting line at one point over 1/2 hour wait that was negative. The buffet was okay but food seemed bland..not bad just okay. All the service people went out of their way to help you if you needed anything.

Economic times by KathyT53226172

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I love cruising. I was surprised by the number of things NOT included in the cruise and the 18% gratuity added and the daily room charge per person. I still enjoy eating in the dining room and cafe-love the open seating plan. I dont believe in tipping in the first place. I am not responsible for the salaries/wages of others.

Mixed Feelings by RebeccaL6

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was beautiful and was always very clean. There is not a lot to do for teen's. The food wasn't that great, i've had better on other lines. They make you pay for a lot of activities on board.

horrible from start to finish by TomG1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I knew things were not gonna go right even the day before the cruise. The price for the three of us had dropped $400.00. I called to see if I could get a price adjustment. referred me to Norweigan. I called Norweigan and they referred me back to . I called again and again they referred me to Norweigan. I called Norweigan and again they referred me to . I understood now that no one was gonna take responsibility to help me. The cruise itself was crappy. 7 days on the Mexican Riviera in a Hurricane. The one place we realy wanted to see was Cabo San Lucas but the weather would not allow us. We did stop in Mazatlan, horrible, rained all day and excursions were cancelled, nothing to do on land and the cruise ship pretty much shuts down in port so nothing to do on ship. We stopped in Puerto Vallarta even though we should not have, it rained so hard it was like a monsoon, flooding the streets. There was no where to walk because of that and we got soaked from head to toe. Didnt think to bring fishing boots on this trip to walk around. We got back to the ship and again the ship was pretty much shut down for activities. Again nothing to do on land, excursions cancelled and nothing to on the boat. We finally had a warm sunny day on the fifth day of our seven day cruise. The captain made an announcement that even though we didnt stop in Cabo San Lucas we were gonna sail nice and slow so that we could take pictures of it. What a treat, to sail right by the place we actually looked forward to going but couldnt (sarcasm). The boat overall was outdated, limited activities for my four year old when the weather is crappy six out the seven days. Their day care center was the only thing I can say was good on the boat but you had to pay if we were in port. Forget getting a $50 dollar soda card, its a waste since there are limited places to get a soda when you are eating and the servers will bring you your first soda just about at dessert time so you are limited to one per dining. The food was poor quality, they ran out of some food items, ran out of milk whenever we asked for it. It was just an overall bad experience and the worst cruise I have ever been on. I would not recommend Norweigan or ,both do not care about their customers.

a terrible vacation by ChristyO2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was pretty from a far. up close it was not maintained and the bathrooms had constant over flowing issues which made many of the areas stink like sewage. The customer service was non existant and consistency was not there either. The only good service was received in my stateroom by my stewards and in the restaurants you had to pay extra for. NO exaggeration.

A good value for the money paid by Becky152094924

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was nice and the people on board were very nice and extremely helpful. The food in the main dining rooms were good but the buffet wasn't that good. The ship seemed to be a little outdated and the flow of the ship was interesting. You had to walk through bars, resterants, etc just to get to your destination. The ports were really nice. The cruise was a tremendous value and great price. The only other negative was the casino I couldn't go into because the smoke was out of control. Really not comfortable and I do like to gamble. They should make it non smoking. The gift shop was nice and had fairly good values on the clothes.

Relaxing trip by SueM1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

They really mean it when they say don't bring your own alcohol onto the ship. Our baggage was held and we had to stand in line an hour (with a whole bunch of other folks) to fess up to a bottle Baileys and they held it until the end of the cruise. Most of the staff was very pleasant and our cabin stewards were the best! The spa was kind of expensive, but we enjoyed the acupuncture session and learned a lot. Pool was kind of small, but area around was very nice with hot tubs, open sunning, and some shaded seating. The Bier Garten was high above the pool and shaded. It was pleasant to listen to the live music and sip on beers.

Would not recommend by KodyB

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I wouldn't say the ship was horrible, but Carnival far surpassed NCL. There are too many pay restaurants. It wouldn't be so bad if the other food was better. The buffet food was awful. We had to pay extra to use the sauna and steam room. I thought the spa services were too expensive. The selection of slot machines in the casino was very limited. Most machines were old. The last night they took our robes away! I was impressed with the embarkment process, it went very quickly. We booked an excursion in LA, so we were able to debark very quickly also.

Waste of my money by BrettP

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Here's my story with the Norweigan cruise. First thing, we get on the ship, it's very nice and we have a few beers by the pool, good times. They bring the bags and set them outside of the rooms in the hallway. We walk to our room and find that the bags are just sitting in the hallway, I take my bag inside, to find out that everything in it of value had been stolen. They looked at the cameras and said they couldnt see anything. They said sorry, and when I asked if they could look in to the port that takes your bags (sketchiest people you can think of are handling the bags at the port), they say they dont control that. Ok, whatever, not gonna let that ruin my trip. The ports were dreadful dump cities that there are few more things to do but see all the cheesy shops. The one in Canada, however, was somewhat interesting as we had good food and took in some interesting sites. The entertainment on the ship was awful, see below for details on that. Overall, not a fun experience, and have been told by others, that cruising Norweigan was likely the cause as everyone I've heard from says Royal Carribean is the way to go.

Could have been alot better cruise! by LasindaC

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

Staff was rude in the dinning rooms. Two twin beds put together are you kidding!! The sheets did not fit anything! I went to Mexico and did not get any good food! The grill around the pool area was always shut down by 3 or 3:30pm, which I think was stupid!! It should have been open as long as the pool area was open! I only have one other Cruise line to compair to NCL, but I can promise I will never go with NCL again!

Alaska via the Norwegian Star! by JohnA26

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

First of all, embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze--much improved since we last sailed. We used the "walk off" disembarkation, carrying our own bags off the ship and it couldn't have been easier--no waiting and we could leave whenever we wanted to. We initially weren't too happy about the extra fee charged for a "specialty" restaurant. We did try the Tex Mex restaurant and, I must say, it was exceptionally good quality and was only $10 each more, with a free margarita. The guacamole and mango salsa were fantastic, as were the lobster tacos. The two regular restaurants were very good also and we liked the option to eat alone or to "share." We shared quite frequently and met a lot of nice people from all over the country. But, a couple of times, we just wanted to dine alone and that was no problem. The food was excellent and plentiful always! The staff could not have been friendlier or more accommodating and there was always something fun to do at any time of the day, if you wanted to. The ports offered, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Prince Rupert were all amazing, as well as viewing the Sawyer Iceberg from the ship. There were so many shore excursions to choose from, it was difficult to choose. In Ketchikan, we took a back country Jeep tour (and we drove the Jeeps) that also included rowing a large canoe across a lake where hot clam chowder was cooking on an open fire, along with wonderful smoked salmon available. We had a beautiful day and thoroughly enjoyed this trip. In Juneau, we went whale watching and were lucky enough to see whales jumping completely out of the water and crashing back into the sea--amazing sight! In Skagway, we took the White Pass Rail trip and it was full of fascinating history of the gold rush days. When you view the original trail through the mountains, it seemed impossible that anyone could have survived the trip to the Yukon gold fields. And, in Prince Rupert, we learned all about the native Indians and participated in a replica of their winter feasts. The trip on the Norwegian Star was amazing and I think everyone in the country should travel at least once to Alaska in their lifetime. I have never seen anything like it anywhere else. Dealing with Cruises Only has worked out perfectly for us, with never a glitch anywhere. I will continue to use Cruises Only when I plan to book a cruise, and I highly recommend them.
