Would not cruise with NCL again by JuneO

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The ship itself was ok....the activities were not the best for the younger crowd...The casino payoff was absolutely awful really saw no one actually winning...very difficult to make reservations for dinner unless you did it on the first night and it is hard to know what you'll be doing on a 7 day cruise on the first day so that you can make reservation...I think a first come first serve basis would be better

" A great experience" by PatsyS

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The welcome aboard was great--we had a wonderful barbeque before our rooms were ready and the staff showed how friendly and helpful they were. This never changed over the course of the cruise. The restaurants are very good, and the specialty restaurants are well worth the extra charge for dining in them. The food was very good. I was impressed by the main dining rooms--the buffet was very good---and the "Versai" dining room was impressive--beautiful inside and the service impecable. We had excellent entertainment, a library, reading rooms and card rooms. The forward of the ship has a huge living room like atmosphere with great viewing of our journey at sea. It has a good bar and was also used for some of the entertainment and live music. I don't mind paying for softdrinks in the bar, but with dinner, I did not think that was right. Coffee, iced tea, or hot tea were available at all meals-- The ship was easy to navigate thru--good elevator access--each floor had a description of what was on it and how to find it. The ship is clean and the staff does an excellent job of keeping it looking good. I did not like the casino because of the cigarette smoke--I also think they should do a better job of carding minors both in the casino and in drinking.

Beautiful Alaskan Cruise by MaryS45

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The Star was a beautiful ship and maintained exceptionally well. Our cabin was spotless. I appreciated the hand sanitizers placed all over the ship as well as getting on and off the ship. Good practice! We had an exceptional week with the weather which made the scenery even more spectacular!

Nice ship! by LarryH10

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

Cleanliness and housekeeping were great! White color of ship is clean and elegant, but stars and other pictures around ship are a bit tacky. Elevators, as stated above, were quite inadequate. Ship was fairly well laid out, but sometimes you had to retrace steps and go around because of "crew only" areas.

Great price-to-quality ratio by DanK4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The cruise was very pleasant, locations very memorable. The staff was friendly and mostly proficient. The ship was not the newest, but more then adequate. The "free style" cruising was not all that "free" in any sense - nice restaurants required co-pay, reservations, and opened after 5:30. The "free" was the cafeteria-style dining room which got old eventually. Now, it should be said that as far as cafeterias go, this one was really very good. Over all: for the price (~$800/person, VERY obstructed view), the cruise was a very good deal.

Norwegian Star - Alaska by JamieA

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

The cruise was nothing like any I have ever been on before. It was nowhere near as nice as cruises I have taken with other cruise lines. did a fabulous job of getting us a great price and answering all of our questions - they were wonderful. But Norwegian Cruise Line did not meet my expectations. Staff was nice, shows/entertainment was fine - although not as great as other cruise lines, and the ports planned were great. On the negative side, the food was horrible. We rarely left a meal full or satisfied, with the exception of paying a surcharge per person at an onboard restaurant. See, in order to get a good meal, you have to pay extra - above and beyond the thousands you have already put into this trip. That, in my opinion, is not acceptable. The food that did not cost extra was served cafeteria style... and the restaurants where you could sit and not pay a surcharge for a meal, just served the same food that the cafeteria style areas did. My husband and I will probably never cruise with NCL again...

Most relaxing and beautiful vacations by BarbaraJ5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We enjoyed the freestyle dining, coming and going when we pleased. The variety on the buffet was great. There are 2 sit down restaurants, with full service, at no additional charges, the specialty restaurants had a great variety but had no mexican food. Plenty of activities going on if you were up to it. The spa/fitness center was beautiful and staff very helpful. We asked for a few extra's from our housekeeping staff which they provided immediately. Housekeeping was very efficient. There didn't seem to be enough jacuzzi space on the ship it was always full.

Just fair for 7 days by SD322846886

The food was horrible, the buffet food was cold all the time, carving station meat was fatty and uneatabile. Rooms were smaller than other cruise ships especially the bathroom.

We had a very good Cruise! by ColleenP

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We enjoyed our Cruise on the Norwegian Star. We felt that our room Stewards took very good care of us. We didn't particularly like having to pay the extra $10. per person, per day; as had not planned on it prior to taking the cruise. Also, would have liked to use Cash, but instead used a credit card and felt that we overspent as we could not keep track of it as easily. But it was an efficient way I guess for the crew to do it. Also, enjoyed the Freestyle type of Cruise as didn't have to dress to the nines if we didn't want too, was more relaxing. We thought the food was very good and thought the buffet for breakfast, etc. was good and had a good variety. The Shore Excursions were too expensive, so we didn't take any, but enjoyed our stopovers in the towns of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. I did have an accident and fell and hit my head, but that was my own fault. Probably should have gone to the Medical Facilities on board, etc., but didn't feel like the $75/hr was affordable either. All in all, tho, we enjoyed the cruise and I took lots of great pictures from our balcony in the Tracy Arm, and other places.

a nice cruise by GeraldS

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)

If this was my first cruise I would have rated it much better. The main reason that I don't rate it higher is the dislike for freestyle cruising. It is a matter of preference and I am sure some people prefer it.

Great Time by aT122240860

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Alaska - Inside Passage

We enjoyed our time cruising to Alaska. The only way to cruise is to have a balcony room, so that you can enjoy the fresh air and privacy. The Staff, in particular the Cruise Director and the DJ, made the trip very enjoyable. At times, it did seem that the main dining rooms during the peak dining hours between the opening and 8:00 PM were extremely understaffed. It was difficult to obtain a beverage and to be recognized as needing service. The reservation system on board the ship, should be clearly spelled out to all passengers prior to booking on this cruise line. The added cover charges at the restaurants, was excessive in price given the cost of the total cruise package. To have to pay $20.00 per person plus an additional cost to have steak and lobster was expensive. The grautiuity of 18% added onto the bill made the cost for two people to dine in excess of $100.00. The feeling also was, that there was an expectation for additional tipping at these "cover" restaurants. The main courses at the open dining rooms, were strange, and in some cases distasteful. If a person enjoys eating lamb, duck and tough cuts of meats with various countries names associated with them then I am sure that they would be satistifed. The buffet at the pool, was sparse at best. The main selection of cold hambugers or hotdogs, with cheap American cheese and plain tortilla chips is in no way gourmet. There was not a change daily of the offerings to the Customers of the cruise. The last morning of the cruise, the cleaning staff barged into the bathroom, while I was in there and kept knocking. Even after I asked them to leave they hesitated. I felt like we were being "run off" and were not ready to leave as it was only 7:30 am in the morning. I would highly recommend, that anyone that is considering a cruise do thier homework on all available cruise lines and speak with people that have taken trips and would be able to share thier experiences to give a good overall conclusion on which cruise line would be the best selection.
