Review summary

My wife and I are an active couple in our mid-70’s that have had the good fortune of being able to travel quite extensively. That said, we are relatively new to cruising and have chosen Norwegian Cruise Lines as our primary large ship vendor. One trip that we have always wanted to go on was to visit the inner passage of Alaska. We booked on the Norwegian Spirit for an 11-day cruise embarking from Seattle September 21 and returning on October 2, 2022. To our surprise the ship was half full carrying only ~1,000 passenger’s verses 2,000+ that it can hold. We’re not certain whether people were still wary of COVID or there wasn’t sufficient crew to support a higher number of passengers. We book stateroom 10562, midships with a balcony on the port side of the ship. I must say that this stateroom was very comfortable, relatively spacious and had a much better bathroom then we previously had on the Epic. We can’t say enough positives about the service, personnel, entertainment and specialty dinning. The meals and service at Cagney’s and Le Bistro were exceptional, however the quality and variety of food available at the Garden Café was at best marginal and certainly did not compare to previous travel on other NCL trips. Weather prevented us from sailing to see the Hubbard Glacier and also docking in Skagway. Weather is not be controlled by NCL but these weather-related changes caused cancelation of the White Pass Summit Train & City Tour (Skagway) and the Craft Brewery & Distillery Tasting Tour (Victoria, BC). All and all we truly enjoyed our cruise, BUT here comes our major problem! Hundreds of dollars of our money were lost by NCL - a case of now you see it and now you don't. On October 2, at the end of our Alaska cruise on the Spirit I had a credit of hundreds of dollars due to cancelled excursions. I was told that these monies would go back on the credit card on file within 30 days of debarkation. I am now approaching 90 days after taking all of the steps I was directed to by NCL including filing a claim and being assigned a case number. The automatic email I received was that it might take up to 30 days to get a response, that was 45 days ago. Guest Relations informed me that my monies were returned to the World Points Rewards a Bank of America program. I have no Bank of America credit card and therefore do not participate in this program. I have requested that they (NCL) provide with me with the last 4 digits of the credit card they posted the monies to and the date that the monies were credited and have received no response from them. NCL Guest Relations and their Resolution Department have become a black hole. I doubt whether my wife and I will ever travel with NCL again! Any suggestions as to what next steps I can take would be greatly appreciated??????

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food in the main dining room was at best mediocre. Only one main dining room, Widows was open and Taste was closed. Specialty dining at both Cagney's and Le Bistro was excellent as were all of the beverages. I was a bit surprised that ordering drink at the Martini bar even if your asking for average liquor (Absolute) was outside of the normal beverage package. The Garden Cafe was a complete disappointment with limited offerings and food at the buffet not refreshed and serve Luke warm. All service was excellent as well as staff throughout the ship.d

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Dancing, quiz shows, gym and educational programs were well prepared and presented.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Vegas quality shows from stage production, dancers, singer and comedians.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All staff were above average. That said our ship was at half passenger capacity and there was clearly a shortage of staff in both the dining and beverage areas.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship was easy to get around and all common areas were clean and appeared to be well maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
My wife and I found the cabin to be very comfortable with ample storage and closet space. The bathroom was much better then we experience on the NCL Epic which we saved on a few years ago.

Ports of call

Sitka, Alaska

4 out of 5
We enjoyed visiting Sitka and took a private excursion (booked on our own) to see salmon running, brown bears and eagles.

Cruise Hubbard Glacier

Miss this portion of the cruise due to weather.

Juneau, Alaska

5 out of 5
Spent 2 days in Juneau because we were unable to enter the port of Skagway due to weather. Went on the Whale Watching and Salmon Bake excursion. we had an excellent Captain and guide during our whale watching and were in the midst of a pod of 8 humpback whales and we were happily surprised at how really good the Salmon Bake was. All of the food was freshly prepared and home made by the local peoples of Juneau.

Skagway, Alaska

Missed this port due to weather resulting in the cancelation of our "White Pass Summit Train & City Tour" excursion that we book. More on that later!

Cruise Glacier Bay

5 out of 5
Pristine sunny day to see and cruise Glacier Bay. Excellent presentation by US Park Rangers prior to entering Glacier Bay.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

3 out of 5
Small port with little to see and do.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Victoria, British Columbia

Very pretty city but not much time to see things. Our excursion, "Craft Brewery & Distillery Tasting Tour" was canceled. More on that later!

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

Pretty city! Took the Big Bus Tour of the city and enjoyed seeing as much of the city as time would allow.

Thank you for the review. Agree with tanya4. Contact your credit card company for advice.

Glad you enjoyed most of your cruise. The primary reason the ship was only half full is that September and October are late to be cruising in Alaska and can have bad weather and missed ports. Refunds taking 90 days or more with cruise lines is not uncommon now.

Just file a dispute of charges with your credit card company….. they will credit your acct the $$ and then take action with the cruise line . Sorry this happened !!
