Review summary

We love being on board the spirit as there is a great atmosphere. We had a lot of good times. The staff and crew go out of their way to give the passengers excellent service. Apart from the debacle in Malta we had a really enjoyable holiday. Our next cruise is on the ncl jade I hope it meets the standards set by the the spirit

Embarkation

5 out of 5
As we were in a suite we had priority boarding

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Overall the food is good, one or two disappointments. The buffet is surprisingly good

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
My husband and I enjoy the music provided on the ship. We don’t gamble or play bingo but we did take part in a martini tasting which was most enjoyable. We met friendly affable people

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We only went to the theatre twice, which performed to a high standard. We enjoy the music provided in the various bars

Children's Programs

We had no children with us

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All the staff were friendly and helpful. There was one grumpy barman but he didn’t spoil our holiday

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship is getting old but it is clean and well maintained

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Very comfortable, particularly the bed. It was very room with plenty of storage. We had two toilets a bath, a shower cabinet and 2 wash hand basins. All were very clean and well looked after

Ship tip

Relax and be prepared to enjoy yourself. Fellow passengers tend to be friendly, apart from a few.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Our cruise left from here but we spent 2 nights in a hotel as we love this city

Santorini, Greece Did not visit port

It was very windy and the visit was cancelled

Piraeus (Athens), Greece Did not visit port

We like when the ship is quiet and we can have a lazy day, we have been before

Mykonos, Greece

We didn’t do an organised excursion but rather than take the shuttle bus which was $15 we took the water taxi. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AT ALL. We paid €4 return , there was no way I was getting back on that boat. It was over crowded and no rails to hang onto when boarding . I have a mobility problem but was prepared to walk the 3 miles back to the ship(in easy stages) we had read there weren’t many taxis on the island so with that in mind we set of. A taxi did appear but we was not available a a little while later an available one appeared which took us back to the ship. Another couple tried to hail us, our taxi stopped and told them another cab would be with them in 2 minutes. Our driver spoke to his station and told them where 2 people were waiting. Which it did as we spoke to them later and laughed about our experiences.a very impressive service but I don’t understand why no taxis were allowed at the port. I think I would have liked Mykonos but I was worried about getting back to the ship I couldn’t relax. We are returning in September and we will definitely go on shore and do a bit of exploring

Rhodes, Greece

I loved Rhodes. There is much to love, beautiful scenery , history, archeology, as we are becoming fed up with coaches supplied for the cruise excursion we hired a taxi for €60 and was taken round to various points of interest. We could have had longer but we opted for an hour trip. Very nice driver who loved his island and was so proud of his heritage.

Souda (Chania), Crete Did not visit port

We were there for half a day and stayed on board

Valletta, Malta

We were on an official scenic coach trip. The coach was pretty manky. I am tall and was squashed into the seat, my knees were nearly chest high. We found our guide to be supercilious and as time went on we realised he was also anti British ( we are British)I could say more on this subject but I won’t as I am going to complain directly to ncl about this matter. We were taken to a flea market, it was only fit for fleas, it was held in an area over run with weeds and generally a dump. On returning we were dropped of with a few hundred people. There were 2 cruise ships in. The security checks we had to go through was ridiculous, the staff were not friendly!! This was a low level effort excursion suitable for people with mobility problems. It took us an hour to get back on board, we had to stand the whole time. The queue took us into a tunnel with shops to either side, if this was a ploy to make us spend money it didn’t work as I got angrier and angrier Cattle would have been treated better! We were welcomed back by the ncl crew with hot towels and liquid refreshment. Which was very welcome. We will go back to Valletta but would hire a taxi to take us to parts we would like to visit.

Messina, Sicily Did not visit port

I was still exhausted after the previous days we stayed on board

Naples, Italy

We have been here before and found I’d dirty and uncared forvso we didn’t wander very far

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy Did not visit port

Stayed on board

Disembarkation

It should have been excellent as I find ncl very efficient but it is a long walk from the ship and along the purpose built walk way but there are no seats to rest weary legs. Many passengers had organised wheelchair assistance which I will do next time. It seems amazing there are no seats as a lot of people are waiting for coaches, taxis to take them on to their next destination
