Review summary

The itinerary was quite exhausting. We would have enjoyed an extra sea day before disembarking just to relax a bit. We loved most of the ports but Cagliari wasn't the greatest. We were a group of four cruising together and did the previous cruise to the Canaries just before this one and actually enjoyed that itinerary more. The ship itself cannot be faulted in any way and the staff members are an asset to NCL. We'll definitely be back on a NCL cruise in the future!

As we were back to back cruisers we didn't go through the process and also kept the same cabin so it was just a continuation with no problems.

Ship tip

If you do this itinerary departing from Rome, arrive a few days earlier as there is a lot to see. The port is very far away from the airport - at least an hour's drive or more, so keep this in mind when planning your arrival.

Ports of call

Barcelona, Spain

Arrive a few days earlier as there is a lot to see in this exciting city.

Palma De Mallorca, Balearic Islands

Didn't do an excursion and just walked around and enjoyed the sights

Valencia, Spain

Absolutely beautiful city! We caught a municipal bus into the city and back and just did our own thing.

Cartagena, Spain

4 out of 5
We hired a private taxi with our friends and had an enjoyable ride through Cartagena and some shopping afterwards.

Malaga, Spain

There is so much to see around this port. I would recommend doing an excursion to Mijas, a village outside up in the hills. We visited there during a road trip years ago and loved it. Otherwise for those who prefer to do their own thing, just walk into the town and go into the Moorish castle or visit the Picasso Museum.

Gibraltar (U.K.)

We had been here before so didn't do an excursion but for first timers the cable car ride up to the top is a must but beware of the Barbary apes. Don't take any shopping bags with as the grab it from you the minute you set foot out of the cable car. The locals told us that tourists often end up getting bitten because they aren't aware that they should be cautious around them.

Cagliari, Sardinia

It wasn't terrible but not the best either.

Valletta, Malta

Stunning port with lots to see and do. Don't use the red hop-on-hop- off bus service - they take too long and are often late. The blue ones are more regular. We did a trip out to the Mdina which was lovely but far,so just keep that in mind if you are not on the ship's excursion.

Messina, Sicily

Don't miss the spectacular clock display at 12 o'clock at the cathedral - it is fantastic. Some people took a train out to the beach and said it was quite beautiful.

Naples, Italy

3 out of 5
Definitely do an excursion to Capri, Sorrento or Pompeii as the city itself is not great. We had been to all three on a previous trip and opted to walk around Naples this time to get a feel of the place, but it's not the prettiest of places.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

As we had spent plenty of time in Rome previously we just disembarked and went straight to the airport. NCL organizes a transfer from the port which is about an hour away when there isn't traffic. The airport itself is extremely busy and it took us ages to get through passport control. For guests on a cruise stop an excursion is essential.

Disembarkation

Unbelievably smooth.
