Review summary

This was only our third Norwegian cruise and we are looking forward to taking another voyage on this ship. We have cruised over twenty years and truly enjoy a well run ship with a good food selection and a great staff.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
LA port is a mess. The Joy crew had their hands full with the poor dock facilities. The crew had to overcome the lack of dock space for cargo loading and passenger embarkation. To exacerbate the situation the HAL website stated the incorrect ship location.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The Garden Cafe was the best we have experienced on many cruise lines, as our fellow cruisers discovered. The Cafe always had a good selection of food, and was especially crowded during breakfast and lunch. Cagney's Steakhouse was the best.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
We had visited most of the activity areas but did not spend much time enjoying the facilities.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We enjoyed the musicians in various locations. The Brewhouse musician was very enjoyable.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The entire crew was very busy, but always had time to be very cordial. The highlight for many of the guests was Rowen ("tambourine man") who always had a smile and a song when you entered the Garden Cafe. The general manager and his assistant Abegail Lego seemed to be everywhere helping the staff and guests.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The crew, waiters, cabin attendants, and supervisors all helped in maintaining clean common areas and dining areas. It was not uncommon to see the supervisors helping the staff in the Garden Cafe.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was very comfortable and had more storage then most ships. The only reason for only 4 stars was the cabin was above the bow thrusters and would vibrate during docking operations which, some mornings, started very early.

Ship tip

The most comfortable and scenic place on the ship is the Observation area on deck 15.

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

1 out of 5
Terrible port and dirty city.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

4 out of 5
We have visited several times before. Just enjoyed lunch at a waterfront cafe.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

4 out of 5
This port has grown in the past few years. We did a little shopping and picked up some items we forgot to bring.

Acapulco, Mexico

3 out of 5
Again we have visited this area several times so we just walked around some of the shops.

Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala

4 out of 5
The gardens, shops and animals in the port area were very nice.

Panama City, Panama

4 out of 5
We enjoyed the Hop-on-hop-off bus though the city and stopped at the Imax theater for the canal movie.

Panama Canal Transit

5 out of 5
This was our first time though the new parts of the canal and the ship hired an excellent informative tour guide to narrate the crossing.

Cartagena, Colombia

3 out of 5
The city hasn't changed. We did our own tour.

Miami, Florida

4 out of 5
We live a few hours away so no tours were needed

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
The ship staff did an excellent job disembarking a over two thousand guests.
