Review summary

Norway is incredible and the cruise is what you make of it. Sure there were lines for dinner at times.. so go later or go somewhere else! There were options, after all. Norwegian dropped the ball a bit on this one but it didn’t ruin our fun. The crew tried hard all the way through. We have been on a number of cruises and there were things that were better and worse with each one. Most of the ‘worse’ with this one had to do with other passengers who could have minded their manners a little better.

Embarkation

We arrived at the pier at about 2:00 pm, after the initial rush. We experienced almost no wait to check in and board the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
We ate breakfast a few times in the main dining room, Grand Pacific. There was no wait, service was a bit rushed but good and a nice breakfast selection was offered. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and was the correct temperature and tasted good. Other days we braved the crowds at the Garden cafe, but took out food into the La Cucina space, sometimes for the peace and quiet and sometimes just to find an empty table. The food was varied and good. What you expect from a buffet..

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
This ship was understaffed - especially in the food and beverage service areas. This caused lines in the evening at the main dining rooms and the inability of the ship to open up all of the reservation spots in the specialty restaurants. But all the crew members were pleasant and polite, despite clearly being over-tasked.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship, although older, has been refurbished in the past few years and was kept quite clean.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England

4 out of 5
If you take the train, as we did from London, it is an easy walk to the port if you don’t have too much luggage.

Haugesund

4 out of 5
Not just tons to do at the time we visited, especially with dreary weather.

Bergen, Norway

5 out of 5
Beautiful, though wet the day we visited. Went up the funicular then visited Edvard Grieg ‘s home for a concert.

Leknes, Norway

5 out of 5
Beautiful! If you are booking shore excursions that are not through the ship, book early!

Tromso, Norway

5 out of 5
Wet when we visited but still beautiful on our (non-ship) shore excursion. First reindeer sighting..

Honningsvag, Norway

5 out of 5
A wild shore excursion showed us the best of the Arctic.. went to the fjord in heavy seas, but saw puffins, eagles etc., then by vehicle and hike to the globe in winds you could barely walk in.. reindeer didn’t mind!

Alesund, Norway

3 out of 5
Fjords to trolls tour - do it! You can book through the ship or not..one is cheaper. ;)

Stavanger, Norway

Fjord tour by boat to Pulpit rock. Beautiful day followed by nice outdoor lunch in the town. Ship docks right there..

I feel so sad for people who have the great opportunity of sailing on these beautiful cruise ships & complain & grumble about petty stuff. For myself I’m always in awe of the splendour & beauty of great cruises. I can hardly wait to go again. I always feel so lucky to have these great times.

Two things that can easily ruin a cruise every time - the weather and the other passengers!
