Great ship, excellent entertainment! by playbridgeusa

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

I have cruised many times, some on NCL and some on other ships.  This was one of the best experiences I've had.  The entertainment was the best I have ever seen on a ship!  "Burn the Floor", "Legally Blond", The "Dueling Pianos" (which I went to 3 times) were among the best!  They have a Comedy Club, which shares times with the Dueling Pianos, The Illusionarium, a fantastic magic dinner-show, fireworks, and so much other wonderful entertainment.  The food was very good - the buffet offers many choices.  There are three main dining rooms (free) and the Tropicana, one of the main ones, has music and a dance floor!  My only two criticisms are:  the seats in the Theater are rather uncomfortable.  They tilt forward and if you sit all the way back, you feel a metal bar.  The casino is smoky, even the non-smoking section, which isn't always open.  Just thought of one more:  too many (and too expensive) up-charge restaurants. Reduce the price a bit; after all, these people are entitled to eat in the main dining rooms, it shouldn't cost $30 more for finer dining.  I would definitely go on this ship and cruise again!

Never a dull moment by ninky

Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Love, Love, Love this ship! Always something to do but always quiet space available as well. It was a  very relaxing "Getaway"! This was our second time aboard, and we may do it again. I do not care for Nassau. We stayed on board and enjoyed the very lightly populated pool. Don't miss out on the spa, even if you just do a day pass. It was so relaxing and luxurious!

NOT TOO HAPPY by LulaJay

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

FOOD EXCELLENT, ROOMS CLEAN, DID NOT THINK THERE WAS ENOUGH ENTERTAINMENT. WHEN THEY HAD FOR EXAMPLE THE NEWLYWED GAME, PEOPLE WERE CROWDED INTO THE ATRIUM WITH VERY LIMITED SEATING...THEY WERE ANNOYED IF YOU GOT A SEAT FIRST. THESE MINI SHOWS SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD IN  THEATER AS THEY ARE ON OTHER SHIPS....

AS FOR THE 10% ON BOARD CREDIT, ON THE LAST DAY I FOUND OUT YOU COULD NOT USE IT FOR THE GRATUITIES. ON ALL OTHER SHIPS YOU COULD. WHY GIVE THAT INCENTIVE, AND  THEN TAKE IT BACK. THAT WAS A BIG TURN OFF FOR ME. I DO NOT THINK I WILL GO ON NCL AGAIN. THIS WAS MY FOURTH TRIP AND REALLY ONLY LIKED TWO....

Getaway Cruise 2015 by suebarrineau

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Free style cruising is the way to go. No need to be anywhere at a specific time unless you want to. The staff was very pleasant and always ready to make us happy, whether with the delicious food or bar service. Our cabin person was delightful, always calling us by our name and adding the extra special touches to our cabin every night. Loved the H2O and having a special area just for adults. Already booked 3 more cruises!!

Great Trip by rmb

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We enjoyed sailing on  the Getaway Ship.  The service was very good, especially by our cabin steward.  She was very friendly and greeted us everytime we saw her which was often!  The cabin was very comfortable and well organized.  The bed was also very comfortable to sleep on.  We enjoyed having a balcony and would recommend this feature.

The food in the main dining rooms (Tropicana, Savor and Taste) was very good.  All 3 have the same menu and they keep the 'classic entrees' the same each day but have 5-6 different entrees each night in addition to the classics.  The appetizers and desserts also change nightly, so there is a good variety. We went to these for breakfast several days as well which is a nice relaxing way to start the day!   The main buffet - The Garden Cafe also offered a broad range for breakfast and lunch (never went there for diner).  We limit our time at buffets because we don't like the crowded feeling.  Norwegian ships are great for the Free Style Cruising as they offer so many dining options.

The ship was also very clean -and there are hand sanitizers everywhere to use throughout the public areas.

There are also plenty of lounge chairs on decks for sunning.  We were also very pleasantly surprised how well they handle 4000 people regarding disembarkment.  It has been 12 years since we cruised and it seems they have actually improved this process despite the fact there are 2x more people!

Overall it was a great trip!

Enjoyed the Getaway by the2gers

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We had a fantastic time on this cruise.  Lots to do and could not do everything that we wanted to do because of various things scheduled at the same time.  "Burn The Floor" is very enjoyable and fast paced.  The dancers from this show also did a dance show in the Tropicana Restaurant on 2 evenings during the dinner hour which made the dining experience extra special.  Experienced the Ice Bar and it's really cold.  Always enjoy the trivia games and all the other games played on the ship.  Food and service on the ship was really great.  Prime rib dinner in O'Sheehans was the best that I have had on a cruise ship.  Enjoyed the late night snacks in O'Sheehans too.  Took some dance lessons from the cast of "Burn The Floor" and learned a few new dance moves.  Dueling Piano's in "Howl at the Moon" made for a fun evening.  Will have to go back again in the future to go to some of the venues that we didn't get a chance to do.

Beautiful Art work and Restuarants throughout the ship by Cruise4ever

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

The ship was clean and had fancy restaurants thoughout.. It had a lot of things for kids to do on it. I prefer the dining and intertainment on Holland America, Royal Carribian and Celebrity Cruise lines much better. The ship seemed to "rock" a lot more than others, but it could have been because we were on the 14th floor. Not all the sweet emenities you get on other ships. All in all for the price we got for a 7 day, it was ok.

wish I would have stayed home by georgiachick

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

First of all the ship is just too big.  too many kids and young adults.  the lay out of the ship was ok but no elevators in the middle of ship and didn't like walking thru the casino on the middle of deck 7.  i thought the entertainment was poor and you have to pay for some of the shows.  our cabin seward wasn't just ok and we had to ask for extra towels, our room to be made up and for robes.  on the other hand our cabin 12292 was wonderful and an extra space on balcony.  the cabin also had great storage and a wonderful bathroom.  the food was good and we didn't bother going to  speciality restaurant.  disappointed though they never seated us with anyone else.  had a great server Jaime a couple of times.  other than her a lot of the servers seemed rush and not very eager to do anything extra.  the ports were very crowded.  Only one small pool for adults.if you have kids and teens you will loved this ship.  lots to do seems to cater to them more than older adults so I  m going back to Princess.

getaway gone bad by flen

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

ship design had some good, more bad. cabin was fine, balcony couldn't be smaller. food was just OK, entertainment...burn the floor was spectacular, magic dinner show was horrible. legally blonde was silly and the rest was just OK. it really upset me that the spa wanted to charge me $45 a day to just use the sauna. couldn't find a venue to just have a drink and dance to music we liked. enjoyed the 2 ping pong tables on deck 15 forward.  adult pool area was way too small.   ship was nice for families with young kids.

Too LOUD! Too Often! Just plain Rude! by daveleigh

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

The Good:  Stateroom Attendant - Excellent!  One show - Burn the Floor - Excellent.

The Fair: Savor Restaurant, food good but deserts lacking everywhere on ship.

Bad: Daily announcements and advertising! Volume so loud it hurt our ears. interrupted shows and activities, the crew would stop what they were doing so we could all hear (blasted) the sales pitch and announcements that were in our daily ship paper.  At the Tropicana Restaurant the music was so loud it ruined our dinner! Island stop - Nassau, waste of time to walk thru dirty city! We attempted early walk off to catch our airport shuttle.  We were forced to stand in line for 30 minutes and look out the open door with gang plank and everything ready for us to leave. We asked why we couldn't leave and were never given an answer.  We almost missed our shuttle! I had to run to it shouting and bang on side of bus!  We will not sail NCL again.  Our experience on Princess was much better!

I had a great time by Joablaw

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

This is our  third cruise and my second  with the NCL.  We loved the free style atmosphere at Norwegian cruises and decided to stick with them for our future cruises.  .We enjoyed our first cruise with the GEM but decided to try the newer and bigger GETAWAY.  We were not disappointed. The ship is huge, roomy  and beautiful.  The entertainment was excellent; the food great; and the staff amazingly courteous.  The only downside to the  Norwegian cruise was when we got off  the ship and trying to get back to our   normal life. It was very hard. I cannot think of a better way to maximize our vacation than to cruise with the Norwegians.  I am already planning our next cruise with the Norwegians.

We'll be back! by AugustGirl

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Loved everything about the cruise: our balcony 14 aft room, friendliness of crew and waitstaff;the restaurants, especially the Tropicana supper club with dance floor and entertainment; the interactive tv and screens for booking shows, planning our day and finding our way about the ship. The sports complex with the ropes course and overhang was daunting!  Good Musical groups played everywhere. The Legally Blonde musical was entertaining and Burn the Floor dance troupe was spectacular. Be sure to book reservations for these. We loved Moderno the Brazilian restAurant. Go hungry! You will get as much ultra tender filet mignon, sirloin, sausages, chicken, ribs, lamb chops, shrimp etc as you can eat. Their huge salad bar even has ceviche. This  was well worth the $20.00 per person. We chose a drink package when we made our reservations two days before the cruise. What  a value; Tangueray 10 for Jim's gin and tonics, and a Bahamas mama or Piña Colada for me every afternoon at the Sugarcane Bar on the eighth deck. This package is good for any of the many bars and restaurants on the ship, The waterfront on the eighth deck was a comfortable place to sink into the cushy chairs and couches to read, muse, nap etc. as you enjoy the view at port or at sea. There were other quiet areas on the ship like the library and an adult area to sun yourself on the 16th deck. The cruise director, Jersey boy, Joel Sanchez was astounding! Warm, friendly, dynamic, he seemed to be everywhere, including  the late night  dance parties on the 16th deck!  We didn't like smelling smoke in parts of the casino, although the ship did a pretty good job isolating the other  smoking areas on the ship. We liked the free style of dining and will certainly book more cruises on Norwegian. We will be back!

Beautiful Ship, lots of activities for families by Pollynana

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Our family has taken several cruises, from Royal Caribbean to Holland America, to NCL.  We have been on older ships, new ships, and mid-size ships.  Our cruises have been 7-day and 12-day cruises, most often in the Caribbean.  We chose this particular ship because of the venue it offered, and the price was comfortable for us.  What we found was that this new ship is definitely structured to entertain the young adult cruisers with children.  There were plenty of activities (rock climbing, "zip" lining and water slides) with a "club" for tweens to enjoy.  Bikini Bottom pool area was fun to watch. There were plenty of places to enjoy company, but few to enjoy a quiet moment.  This ship holds almost 4,000 passengers, with about 1,700 service staff.  Our cruise on Holland America hosted 2,000 passengers with a staff of 1,800.  There was a huge, huge difference in the personal service we received - from the long lines wherever we went, to the very satellite-deficient Internet Café.  The room stewards were always there, but never seen.  They were pleasant, warm and welcoming.  The Garden Café (buffet) was much better than most of the restaurants onboard ... although there again the lines were staggering.  We never had a problem finding a place to sit, however - there are plenty of seats for relaxing and dining if you can manage walking distances.  I probably would not go on another cruise on a ship this large again...but for younger cruisers it would be awesome!  The shore excursions were basic, the onboard activities were all-consuming and touched on a wide range of interests.  The play "Legally Blonde" was fun, the casino constantly hopping with activity, and plenty of restrooms were scattered throughout the ship.  One thing I did miss was having a priest on board.  My first NCL cruise had a priest who performed a marriage renewal ceremony, which made that cruise very special for us.  Also missing was a daily "good morning" from the bridge.  That was nice.  We had information available on our television in the suite, but that personal touch with an update on location and weather made it nicer.  We had two announcements on the eight days onboard.

Not The Greatest Cruise Line Out There by bethagami

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We've been on many, many cruises over the years, but NCL only twice.  The Getaway was a new ship that was poorly maintained the moment we arrived to the room.  I had to have housekeeping come to the room to clean the coffee station area from hair and a leftover pod in the machine and a soiled garbage can.  My friends stayed in a room on the 5th floor for 4 days before being moved to another room due to the bathroom plumbing stench odor.  It was a disgusting odor. The gave her a $200 shipboard credit.  The food had a lot to be desired.  Not much looked appetizing and not as many choices in the buffet as on other ships.  Chicken dinner at one of the restaurants was soooo salty it was inedible.  Very disappointing in the food department.  Not happy that we had to pay for various shows and entertainment on the ship. Cover charges for many of the restaurants and coffee was so bad, the only way to get a good cup of java was to purchase it.  Some areas of the ship could have been better maintained.  The bathrooms, and elevators mostly.  The shows were well done, but the location (Atrium) area was absolutely the wrong place to hold anything.  No seating, couldn't see anything, couldn't enjoy as much as we wanted.  We had to stand and peek through other people to see what was going on.  Why not just have it in the Theater?  We couldn't find any comfortable chairs, lounger chairs or seating anywhere on the ship.   The bed was comfortable though. Excursion to Parasailing we had to walk 15 minutes in the heat (told it would only take 8 minutes) to get there while the tour guide stopped and talked to someone for another 5 minutes before we proceeded.  Why not have transportation to the dock for the $99 for 5 minutes of parasailing? NCL is not the cruise ship for us and won't be sailing it again.

Norwegian Getaway Lots of Upcharges by SuzeQ

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Getaway / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

The food was good we liked the smaller main dining rooms found the service better and food served hotter. I was very disappointed in how many extras they charge you for such as the better shows and better dining I feel those should be included in your cruise price.  No really special dishes desert served (always had lobster somewhere on other cruises, none on this trip). Attended many on ship activities and most were very disorganized, something I have not found on other lines.  The ship was very new and very clean no signs of age on this ship which was a plus.  Our previous cruise was on Royal Freedom of the Seas I did prefer the professionalism and food much better on that line. We loved freestyle dining.
