NCL Breakaway, 7 day Caribbean cruise by johnhunt2417

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

The ship was large and well laid out.  The food was excellent and the accommodations were great.  The only problem we had was with the entertainment.  On all other NCL cruises we were entertained every night with some sort of performance, with the Breakaway we did not have a show or performance going on every night, either nothing or the same thing two nights in a row, otherwise the cruise was great and I would do it again.

Very good vacation. by JEF123

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Out of 5 stars I give the Norwegian Breakaway 4.  If they make just a few adjustments , it would be a perfect cruise vacation.

The freestyle dining experience is excellent with several complimentery restaurants and even more specialty restaurants that are more than worth the cover charge.  The variety of bars and lounges and the selections of beer, wine and cocktails make for a great day at sea.

There are many activities going on at all hours of the day to entertain you.  Most of it is good but I did find the Atrium on deck 6 a bad place to have as a central point for the entertainment because there was just too much going on in that area.  You have guest services and the internet cafe and the atrium bar plus there are never enough seats to comfortably watch a show.

I very much enjoyed the pool and water slides on the days we were in warm climates and the day at Great Stirrup cay was the best.

I can only give 2 big disappointments on this ship.  The first is the fitness center.  It was a terrible experience.  It is way too small for a ship that size with the passenger capacity it has.  More and more people are implementing a fitness regimen into their lives and it would do Norwegian some good to improve the fitness center on their ships.  The second disappointment was the seats in the Breakaway Theater.  We saw Rock of Ages and the show is great but it is 2 hours long and the seats are the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in.

Overall, I would recommend the Norwegian Breakaway to anyone looking for an enjoyable vacation.

Wonderful Escape by ejanelee10

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

The Breakaways initial attraction was sailing from New York.  The experience of meandering down the Hudson on a sunny winter afternoon more than met my expectations. The views were amazing and the ship gorgeous.

The cabins are a good size with plenty of storage. Particularly recommend the aft cabins with the bigger decks if you like to laze on your balcony.

After two relaxing days at sea we arrived at Port Canaveral (not very exciting compared to New York) and a trip to the Kennedy Space Center. What a great way to spend a day. The tour representative was wonderful, the center well worth the explore and the IMAX experience a great way to end the day.

We didn't disembark at the Cay as everyone else did so we virtually had the boat to ourselves.

Nassau was explored on foot by ourselves. Interesting little port, worth getting away from the tourist routes.

The trip home was just as relaxing. Overall the cruise was wonderful - good food, great ship and the type of cruise you make what you want of.

wonderful cruise by rajneesh

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

It is an excellent cruise, with numerous avenues to keep getting entertained. The itinerary & timings are as published in the site. The staff is very professional & mature & of course led by an excellent hierarchy who interact every now & then to check the inconveniences. The food, bar other activities are awesome. My son who is 2 yrs old had a wonderful time. Only the irritation experienced was during disembarkation which i feel should be more organized. Overall a great experience & i strongly recommend the cruise for all ages.

petty good vacation by winnieau8

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

I had a good time in this Breakaway. this is the 3 times I choose this ship in this two years . Food is okay.Ship is beautiful .

ARvin & Emily they are really good singer.

Only the spa didn't feel good , I paid $200 but saw some people they don't need to pay they could used that. That I really upset . Maybe next time I will do the same like those people , three times when I go in, saw some people go in don't need to get the locker , don't need to show the key card , just walking to the spa ,put the small carry bag in the corner and stay there 2 or 3 hours enjoy the free spa. I hope your  company need to return me back the money I paid ..

I hope one day your company could have crusie line  from NY to Bahamas and we could out of the ship 3 or 5 days and get in the ship then back to New York. I really hope one day my dream will come true.

The NCL Breakaway by sofiawillow

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Great Cruise!!! Wonderful private Island! Kids had a blast! Staff was amazing! Only downfall which is a huge mistake on behalf of NCL.  Ruining a beautiful atrium with cigarette smoke.   That took enjoyment away especially eating at "La Cugina" and other specialty restaurants. Non smokers have to pay the price.  They got the architect of the ship wrong.  The casino should be placed in a isolated area.   For that reason we won't be cruising until policies are corrected.  A better job containing the air needs to be done.

Hopefully there's hope!

Great cruise - Excellent value by bjb4334

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

This cruise has something for everyone.  We were apprehensive about cruising on such a large ship.  All of our previous cruises have been on small ships.  However, we were very pleasantly surprised.   The ship is beautifully designed, the excursions are well planned with a wide variety, the on-board activities are numerous and enjoyable.  We never felt part of a mob scene.  We thoroughly enjoyed touring Kennedy Space Center, the Eco-tour in the Cay, and the tour of Nassau.  If you are watching your budget, there are numerous activities, performances and dining excellent experiences at no extra charge.  However, if you choose to do the "extras", they are available also - and very enjoyable.  The ship's staff is excellent and very helpful.

Too much "at sea" by jzatt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Ship, food and crew were fine.  Itinerary was lacking, especially with 2 days at sea for a 7 day cruise and worse, bypassing the island due to weather.

Big Boat; Bad Weather; Still Pretty Good by ManhattanMom

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

We have cruised 8 times before, 5 of which were on Norwegian. We tried the Breakaway because we love cruising out of NYC and the Great Stirrup Cay day is our favorite. We prefer a smaller boat (already booked for the Gem next February) and the weather did not cooperate so we missed Great Stirrup Cay. It's also hard to determine whether I would have preferred the bigger ship if the weather was better (likely yes, but I'm not sure). That being said, we still had a good time. I would like to give this 3.5 stars, but that's not an option.

Mostly fun....some crew attitude poor. by clclip4xs

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Most of the cruise was ok. My luggage tag got ripped off & I didn't get my suitcase till 8:30 at night. That was not optimum. The ship is nice enough....just maybe too big for my taste.... too many people. But the worst thing was a crew member named Kevin who was a judge at a karaoke show who was insulting to me when I made a comment about his opinion of one of the passengers in the contest. I think part of his job is to handle passengers in a more respectful way. If he can't take the heat he should find another job. I will be filing a complaint with the cruise line as well. If you like lots of crowds & an unorganized disembarkation you will be ok.

Bummer by fxrs84

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Bahamas

Can't blame the weather on anyone, but I can say that the Breakaway is designed for mostly outdoor events wether it be dinner or entertainment. So when you and 4000 other people are stuck inside for the whole cruise, it sucks!

I would have loved to experience the ship and the voyage as it was designed but Mother Nature and the Fun Police deiced it was not going to go that way!

Food was ok, entertainment was alright, crew did their job. Too many people.

fun escape by Murr

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

Breakaway is a fun ship and I can imagine how great it is in the hot weather when all of the outdoor areas can be used, especially the outdoor restaurants. That said, the winter cruise gets crowded & a bit hectic but there's lots to do. Catch the sail away party on deck 16 and wear your hats & coats! If you do the short cruise you MUST book your spa appt super early, get on the boat early & run to deck 15 to book the spa time. The NCL concierge app does not work for spa. If you book a package that includes room service, book that right away & be sure to get a menu if it's not already in your room. Go to guest services on deck 6 to confirm number for room service. Have fun!

Don't go in winter !!!! by gehartt

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

Overall, the ship is nice. Food was average except for the specialty restaurants. Steakhouse was very good. Rock of Ages was great. Unfortunately hot tubs were empty which I would've thought would be up and running for a winter cruise. Would've been much more enjoyable in the warmer months. Good escape if you just want to get away to gamble and or see a show.

casino smoke by aekey

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

I enjoyed the time away with family, however the smoke in and near the casino made it impossible for us to play there and enjoy the bars near it. perhaps a better ventilation system is needed. I did not experience this on my 3 previous cruises on other cruise lines.

Beneath expectations by Snowbirdtravels

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

The Breakaway is a beautiful ship.  The cabin was very well cared for.  The ship is kept very clean.  However, the common areas of the ship are not adequate for the passenger load.  Not enough seating to enjoy the performances.  People charge  like a stampede when someone gets up to leave.  The performers are talented in their own right; however, they recycle the same 10 or 12 songs incessantly as they make their way to each venue.  The restaurants are mediocre at best.  The preparation of the food served was good; however, the quality of the food left much to be desired.  We have cruised on Celebrity and Royal Caribbean and there is no comparison as to the quality and variety of the food offered at dinner.  Trying to be seated for a meal is always a challenge.  At the Garden Café one has to scour the area and wait for someone to leave before you can be seated.  Also, the noise level was always at a loud crescendo.  You couldn't begin to have a conversation around the pool area or anywhere in the vicinity.  Even on the 3rd sunning deck forward one was still surrounded with music.  Many of the performers were offensive.  Some were very good.  Rock of Ages should not be performed where children are included.  All entertainment should be G rated. The staff is awesome.  They couldn't have been more gracious and accommodating.  I've cruised on the Gem and my analysis is that the Breakaway is just too big, especially on a cruise that spends so many days at sea and all are gathering inside for entertainment.

Great Ship, Great Time! by Dawna27

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Caribbean - Southern

We had an excellent experience on the Norwegian Breakaway.  We had previously cruised and enjoyed our experience with Carnival, but this ship had a lot more to offer as far as on-board activities, dining options, etc.  Our cruise director, Julie, was very welcoming and presented a variety of excellent shows/entertainment.  Some of our favorites were Rock of Ages, Burn the Floor, and the Cirque specialty show (which wasn't free, but was worth the extra cost).

While there were 24-7 delicious (and complimentary) food options, the specialty restaurants were impressive, especially Teppanyaki which we dined at twice it was so good!

We booked excursions for 5 of the 6 stops through Norwegian, and all worked out well logistics-wise and were a ton of fun.  Our favorites included ziplining excursion in Saint Thomas and the seaturtle/shipwreck snorkel & beach excursion in Barbados.

Our only complaints were the location of our room (at the very front of the ship which was very susceptible to waves and ship-related noise) and that some of the prices on-board were a little high (specifically drinks and photographs).

Overall, a great experience and we can't wait for the next Norwegian cruise!

Great time by mback911

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Cruise to Nowhere

We had a great time on the cruise.  Other than the inordinately large amount of people on the cruise it was a good time.  Liquor may have been slightly cheaper but that would be a complaint anywhere.
