Review summary

We were celebrating my wife’s 40th birthday. The cruise was excellent. Staff was attentive and having everything planned out in advance left us plenty of time to do what we wanted as we wanted

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Had an 11am checkin. Process at the terminal was smooth and easy. Arrived at 10:30 and was at a checkin counter immediately. Boarded at 11:15

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Ocean Blue was by far the best overall meal on the Breakaway. Buffet is great for breakfast and the menus between Savor, Taste, and The Manhattan Room are the same. Had four specialty dinners on our package and none of them disappointed

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
My wife and I like to play the bingo and deal or no deal games on the ship. However, those end on day four because once you’re in Italian waters, the laws around gambling are different than Greece. Casino is also very limited once you leave Malta including being closed on the day/night leaving Livorno. There are plenty of activities on the ship to pass time and unwind

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Six and Burn The Floor are spectacular. The variety type shows in the various venues on the ship were solid including Dueling Pianos

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Always polite and always available. Our cabin attendant Sharon went above and beyond on a daily basis

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
We had previously cruised on Getaway and Breakaway is an identical layout. In spots you can tell the ship has some age but overall staff is always cleaning and the ship is well maintained

Cabin / Stateroom

Ship tip

Plan for long tender process in Santorini, Malta and Cannes

Ports of call

Valletta, Malta

4 out of 5
This is a tricky port as it is technically a tender if you do not come in at the main terminal. If the ship docks at the second dock you’ll have to take a tender shuttle to Valletta as you’ll be docked on 3-cities side. Wish we knew that since our tour was in 3-cities so we ended up taking the tender to Valletta and a ferry back to 3-cities. We explored on our own with a golf cart rental from Rolling Geeks. Easy experience and GPS guided. If you go off course they monitor and call you right away to get you back on course

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Messina, Sicily

We ventured out on our own here and walked over to the Basilica and the clock tower. It’s about a 10 minute walk to your left when you exit the port. Plenty of shopping and the pizza at the restaurant to the left of the clock tower if you’re looking at the basilica was amazing.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
Easy on and off port

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

Santorini, Greece

4 out of 5
This is a tender port and we were there with three other cruise ships. Our tender to shore and the time to get up to the top of the village by cable car was almost 90 minutes. Take that in to account with timing of tours. You can take the steps but it is almost 600 steps up and you’ll be dodging donkey dumps all the way up

Naples, Italy

Cannes, France

Tender port so give yourself time

Disembarkation

We put our bags out the night before and walked off the ship at 8:20am and we were in our car that we reserved in advance by 8:45
