Review summary

A cruise is supposed to be relaxing and fun. Our Holland America Eurodam experience was neither of those things. For four nights, we had a terrible room directly beneath the buffet (after we paid a $1,000 upgrade for a quiet, well-situated room!). On the fifth night, we were moved into a better room with a broken thermostat (and temps of about 60 degrees F inside!). After 6 horrible nights, we were only given a $300 credit. On top of that, both food and service were mediocre -- not what we expected! Guest services was unsympathetic, overwhelmed and impatient. If they had been kinder, offered a bit more compensation (since we paid about $4,500 for two of us on this cruise) for bad nights, lack of sleep -- done anything at all above and beyond to win back our business, it would have mattered. But they didn't. I would not at this point sail with any ship in the Carnival family.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
We were later in the boarding window, so there were very few people and it was easy.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
The main dining room food was so awful that we stopped eating in there after two nights. Buffet was okay. Pizza restaurant (outdoor by the pool) was terrible. Staff was rude, and most people seemed to get the wrong orders.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Fitness center was good.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Entertainment was lackluster.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Service in the main dining room was spotty. Servers disappeared for 20 minute intervals or were impossible to track down. Food was below average.

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
Decor was tired and dusty.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
We paid a significant for amount for an upgrade to a veranda room, high up and in a quiet location. They put us in a room directly under the buffet and we had non-stop noise from 6 am until midnight. For the first four nights, we had no sleep. On the fifth night, they moved us into a suite -- which had a broken thermostat. It took two nights to get temperature and vent issues fixed -- so six bad nights out of seven. My parents were put in a cabin adjacent to a room where they were doing construction. Their experience was horrible as well.

Ship tip

The guest services staff seemed overwhelmed. Don't expect a lot of support or kindness if you have issues.

Too short of time in this port to have it be meaningful. Maybe in port 3 or 4 hours.

Victoria, British Columbia

Ship was very late getting into port so there was not enough time to really get off the ship.

Disembarkation

My father in law got the flu on the ship so we had a quarantined disembarkation. It was very disorganized and we had different information from several different people. It ended up being stressful for us.
