Review summary

My wife and I had an awful experience. We decided to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon and were very excited because this was the first cruise we had ever been on. At first the cruise was pretty decent, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was really nice. However, the service was lacking and the crew was not very friendly. Then, on the second day of our cruise, the captain alerted us that the itinerary needed to be changed in order to prepare for the upcoming hurricane Irma. This change cut the cruise short a full day and cancelled two ports of call. The change itself was understandable considering the impending hurricane. What was not understandable was how Royal Caribbean treated the situation. The PA announcements by the bridge were brief and did not contain much information. When we went to Guest services to see if we would be refunded at all, they assured us that some sort of refund was in the works and that they would be giving everyone free internet so that all guests could make necessary travel plans. They said that we would be updated in about an hour. Well the update never came. The next day, the bridge announced that everyone could make free calls to the US via the phone in each stateroom (this apparently was instead of free wifi). However, offering free phone service was useless because we had no way of finding the phone numbers we needed. The entire crew at this point seemed to realize that most of the guests were unhappy, but instead of rallying to provide the best service, they instead became unconcerned with how the guests were doing and began performing their jobs apathetically. The entire atmosphere of the ship changed and everyone was miserable. On the last day my wife and I went back to guest services to check on the status of any refund. While in line, we overheard a manager heatedly debating with a customer who was also upset. The customer was asking about a refund as well, and the manager stated loudly to "check your contract, we don't owe you anything." upon seeing how rudely a manager was handling the situation, we left the line. We realized that Royal Caribbean's attitude was one of "Well, we have you money already, so it sucks to be you". When we got to our room we found the summary of charges to our account. We noticed that we had been refunded an amount for each port of call that was skipped, however the amount was negligible (about 16$ for each port). This action felt like a slap in the face. It felt as if Royal Caribbean had refunded the absolute smallest amount possible in order to appease the guests. Obviously, we were not appeased. The entire cruise was a huge disappointment. My wife and i had planned numerous activities in the cancelled ports of call that we were unable to enjoy, and instead of being refunded a reasonable amount so that we could find other activities on our own and salvage our honeymoon, we felt spit on. We spent an extraordinary amount of money thinking that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and Royal Caribbean made a disaster out of it. We hope that someone will read this and attempt to rectify the situation, because as it stands we will never sail with RC again.

Main dining room was excellent. But avoid Chops Grille, they severely over cooked our crab legs and the food wasn't any better than the main dining room.

While storms or other unforeseen events can happen at any time, cruising during Hurricane Season is riskier and anyone should be aware of that going in. There are people of the Caribbean who lost everything .... perspective is important.

Congrats to you and your wife first and foremost. Unfortunately, things like this happen. However, I do understand that there just aren't thing's you would know with this being your first cruise. People crack me up with the should have read this should have read that. While it is true, most people don't. I have empathy towards your situation and understand your frustration. They legally have the right to do so, but customer satisfaction should always be important. In this case, it seems that customer satisfaction was put on the back burner to safety which is the most important...( but if you look at it, keeping you alive & safe is the most important form of customer satisfaction). I would suggest looking at this as a learning experience. Cruises are great and fun. Royal Caribbean is amazing. I've been on the Oasis last year, the Harmony back in June, and going on another before the end of this year. Try another cruise before completely throwing them away. Make sure to get travel insurance (especially during hurricane season), contact Royal Caribbean and explain to them in a respectful manner what your issues are and see if they're willing to offer an additional on board credit for booking with them again. Read over the contract so that you fully understand everything. Thing's happen out of our control and we learn from them. Go cruise the world and enjoy all that it has to offer my friend.

@athornton Really terrible comments? Have you read your Cruise Contract? It's clear the OP didn't. It's not just RC it's Holland America it's Carnival and so on; "Itineraries are Subject to Change". If they change you're only entitled to Port Fees refunded that's all. If you don't agree with that don't book a cruise.

I'm sorry everyone is leaving such terrible comments. I completely understand where you are coming from. It is understandable that they have to skip ports of calls for hurricanes, however the cruise lines have money and should also want to keep customers coming back. Making a contract that says they can change it and they don't owe you anything is pathetic. Sorry dude. Hope the next cruise is better for you!

Apparently all you cared about was getting some kind of refund not that RCL did what they needed to do to get everyone out of harms way.... good luck to you

I went on 3 cruises and going on my fourth one and I have no complains. I love it all. I have so much fun and every one on the ship is so nice.

just a reminder, it was hurricane seasons and it was your choice to get a cheaper cruise during this time of year. as for safety it's better to be safe then sorry. life shouldn't be me me I I.

Your timing was bad due to nobody's fault. Things happen. You still have your new bride and a second honeymoon cruise can be planned. Best wishes for a better 'next cruise'.

Unfortunately RC is correct. Itineraries are subject to change and it's in your Cruise Contract. As frustrating as that may sound all you're entitled to according to the contract are port fees to be refunded.

RC did what they had to do to keep you and their employees safe. They did not create the hurricane, it was an act of God. Travel insurance exists to cover situations like this. They are human too. I've traveled a lot and nothing irks me more to see an angry mob verbally abuse a gate agent in an airport when a flight is delayed or canceled, like he or she personally broke the plane. If I got a dollar for every time I heard "I'll never fly this airline again!"...

Think I would just be happy that I was safe and would have made the best of the remainder of my holiday.
