Crown Princess

11 Night Alaska Inside Passage (Vancouver Roundtrip)

Sail date: August 04, 2023

Ship: Crown Princess

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

We had poor weather for most of the cruise - rain, clouds and fog. We found most ports were very touristy. Need to book excursions well in advance. Would go in late May next time. We have done 50 cruises and found that food on the Crown Princess was not up to standard.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
Food was not up to Princess’s usual standard. Some dishes hardly recognisable. I think food quality has a lot to do with the head chef.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Two Wise duo were very good in Wheelhouse bar.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Staff in Horizon Court buffet not very happy. Rarely said good morning at breakfast. I think overworked and understaffed.

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Cabins are getting a bit dated but still comfortable.

Ship tip

If travelling to Alaska go in late May when less rain and book ship excursions early as up to 5 ships in every port each day.

Ports of call

Sitka, Alaska

4 out of 5
Liked a lot because less busy.

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

5 out of 5
Great city very clean and modern on beautiful harbour. Use the hop hop on bus to visit attractions. Stops at cruise terminal.

Ketchikan, Alaska

3 out of 5
Heavy constant rain so couldn’t do anything much.

Cruise Hubbard Glacier

5 out of 5
Excellent even though we had atrocious weather. Well worth seeing even if you didn’t do any excursions. Made the cruise worthwhile.

Victoria, British Columbia

5 out of 5
Beautiful gardens and city. Buthchart Gardens a must see. Also garden of Empress Hotel.

Icy Strait Point (Hoonah), Alaska

4 out of 5
Set up for tourists. One chair lift free the other expensive.

Juneau, Alaska

Skagway, Alaska

Very touristy. 5 ships in port with 15000 people venturing into a small village.

We are on our 10 day Alaska cruise right now. The weather has been a mixed bag. Yesterday in Ketchikan, the high was 69 degrees and sunny! Dare I say that it bordered on hot?! Yes! I was sweating! However, I was dressed in warm clothes-layers people-layers! In Juno, it was cold and rainy. Today in Prince Rupert, Canada, it is cold and rainy. I don’t care-I’m on a cruise! Throw it all at me! I’m happy to be here!

We’ve done 3 Alaska cruises in early May. Two of them had fantastic weather, and the 3rd was off and on. Still my favourite time to that cruise though. Yes…Crown is an older ship, so, you might find the newer ones much better!

The panhandle of Alaska is a rainforest. May is still a rainy season
