Sail date: December 12, 2017

Ship: Celebrity Summit

Cabin type: Balcony

Cabin number: 9138

Review summary

Celebrity seems best of popular lines, little things like champagne on boarding, robes, beach towels to cabin, chocolates to name a few including better food and menus. Have sailed with Carn, Nor. etc. This trip the crew rescued Haitians from a drifting sailboat. Well done Captain Kate McCue,

Select member, so ushered directly to desk and onboard a few minutes later.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Despite upgrades, the ship's age shows, eg. the chairs in cafe are not comfortable or supportive for eating. Food is generally excellent. The key is freshly cooked. In the cafe fresh poached eggs, omelettes, paninis, minute steaks, pork, chicken, fish and pizza all cooked while you watch are far superior to buffet food that has been waiting for you. Main dining room, the beef was good to the beef wellington superb, tender, cooked to perfection. Salmon was perfect, other fish rather dry and lacking taste.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Compared to last Celebrity cruise, the comedians were much more accomplished ie clever funny. The shows were not in the same league , lacking cohesive storylines and without experienced performers. Entertaining, but not impressive.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Steward was always there providing ice and towels as needed. Our waiter was the best, impeccable service, bringing extra dishes and serenading with his guitar. The bar steward scoured the ship for my requested beers and had them waiting for me at the dinner table. Then there is Captain Kate whose professionalism and personality was a highlight of the cruise.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Celebrity Summit is 16 yrs old and it shows. Generally the ship is still in great shape and well maintained It is clean and well organised. Layout is easy to follow. Nothing special but no complaints. Nice that you can walk through the casino without meandering.

Cabin / Stateroom

Nice angled balcony, Very effective space utilisation. Quiet location and convenient esp. easy access to cafe for breakfast

Ship tip

Unpublished drink package, unlimited beers for the daily price of 11/2 - 2 beers.

Ports of call

San Juan, Puerto Rico

4 out of 5
Starting at San Juan gives immediate access to Caribbean ports ,no day cruise from/to Florida.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Too many ships here, Was cancelled from prebooked Viator snorkling, so had to take Celebrity catamaran with over 100 people. Sucked; and the hurricane has changed the fish and turtle population, turtle bay was a disappointment.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

4 out of 5
Too many ships here. Was cancelled from prebooked miniboat trip, so tried to book through ship but was not allowed for age restriction. Did another snorkel trip and found the same conditions.

St. John's, Antigua

4 out of 5
Had prebooked a sailing trip which was well organised but with only 4 people there was no race.

Willemstad, Curacao

Best fun on jetski. Rough water is exciting. Nice to know I am not too old! The snorkling site was busy and fun over a tugboat wreck.

Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba is very busy, resorts with US restaurants, great beaches. For snorkling the water is a little cloudy. We did an advanced horseback ride but the terrain is very rocky and rough.

Kralendijk, Bonaire

5 out of 5
At last a quiet island, snorkling here is great; clear water,a reek with wonderful coral and many fish varieties surrounds the island and klein bonaire as well.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

They need a pier here so ships can dock. Had to tender well offshore, landing at a resort. Everything is spread out. We had a full day with a 45 min. drive to Horseplay, excellent riding with demonstrations of cigar rolling, and chocolate powder. Also ziplining was exhilarating.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
We had a late flight, so stayed on the ship until 9:30. Again Captain Kate was there to bid goodbye to every guest. Long lines for passport check, but easy to hire a porter and go directly to the complementary airport transfer.
