Review summary

This was our fourth cruise but first with Celebrity. The Silhouette will be much less tired after its refurbishment, but for the most part it’s fine. We enjoyed the mix of nationalities onboard and met some lovely people. The food is great, and the quality of the drinks on the classic package is fine. The staff are the best we have experienced throughout the ship. This is the first family cruise that we have been on where the children were ever present and it was generally quite noisy, so I don’t think we would cruise in the Med in school holidays again. The sun beds were tightly packed and prebooked with towels everywhere. I found the lack of personal space difficult. Overall an enjoyable cruise. Not luxurious though and we would choose our next cruise carefully.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Extremely efficient, even when we had to go through twice as I left my phone in the car!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The quality of the food in the main dining room was excellent, and generally there was a good choice. We only used a speciality restaurant once. This was Murano, and the food and service was luxurious. It made for a very special evening, and the lobster bisque was superb. We only ate at the buffet restaurant for breakfast. There was a really good choice of quality foods.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
This is the first cruise we have been on where we didn’t partake of many activities, either because we were sunbathing or the activities didn’t suit us.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Apart from the duo and soloist and one comedian we didn’t feel the entertainment was that appealing.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Absolutely superb! The best service we have experienced anywhere.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
This ship is due for refurbishment in the new year which showed in certain areas. The design is not as impressive as other ships we have sailed on, but I’m sure that will improve after the refurb. The buffet restaurant always seemed in need of a good vacuum, but everywhere else was spotless.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The size of the cabin was fine, and the bathroom was excellent. Our cabin was kept spotless by our wonderful steward.

Ship tip

Wait until after the refurbishment. If not, enjoy the superb service from the wonderful staff.

Ports of call

Vigo, Spain Did not visit port

We missed this port due to inclement weather.

Lisbon, Portugal

4 out of 5
We had visited Lisbon last year on a short break so did not visit the centre this time. Lisbon is an easy city to see the main sights. We visited Sintra on an excursion. This was good, but we could have done with more time.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

4 out of 5
We have visited Rome twice before, so went on an excursion to Bolsena Lake followed by a wine tasting. It was fine but not extraordinary.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

5 out of 5
We have visited Pisa and Florence before, so we went on an excursion to Volterra and San Gimignano. This was an excellent trip and we really enjoyed visiting both places.

Marseille (Provence), France

5 out of 5
We decided to go on an excursion to Avignon at this stop. This was a lovely trip and we enjoyed both the town and the bridge.

Barcelona, Spain

4 out of 5
We visited independently and pre booked tickets to the Sagrada Familia which we had visited ten years before. This was an awe inspiring visit to a unique building. We walked for miles and strolled La Rambla. Though there were beggars, there was also a frequent police presence.

Gibraltar (U.K.)

4 out of 5
This is the fourth time we have visited Gibraltar, but the first where we have done an excursion which goes around the rock. This was very interesting and taught us that there is a lot to explore in Gibraltar asides from the duty free.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Again very efficient and trouble free. Excellent
