We walked from the port to a really nice area that had flamingos, parrots & other wild life. It wasn’t very far (maybe a block or two). It is connected to the port, so you won’t get lost. If you leave that area you are swarmed by taxi drivers trying to get your business. Almost all of the tours are city tours & we have been here before, so there was no need to leave the gated area.

LOVE IT! We went to Totumo Mud Volcano. The best! We had fun and mud up to our noses!😄 Before heading to Totumo they took us around the city and bought some snacks. After Totumo, they took us to the beach and had lunch! The most delicious coconut rice I've ever had! REALLY nice personel! For USD 45 per person: - pick up from the port - return transportation in a private van to the Volcan Totumo - entrance fees and lunch - drop off at the port - English speaking guide: Ours was Evelyn Just in case you're planning to go, here's the info: Carlijn Grinwis Project Manager Office: +57 5 660 9128 Skype: +1 (347) 871 7997 Mobile: +57 304 671 4105 www.ticartagena.com carlijn@ticartagena.com facebook|@thisiscartagena

Excursion to see city highlights was fun but traffic was bad which meant half the time was spent on a bus.

This is one port I would love to spend more time at. I believe this port may become a little dangerous after night fall, gleaning from recent research I have stumbled upon. After researching on TripAdvisor I decided on a $60 Segway Tour "Sightseeing tour for 70 min" (SegwayCartagena.com) and later a tour of the Cartagena Castle (Castillo San Felipe de Barajas). We used the prearranged taxi for $15. My >70 year old sister-in-law and brother-in-law came with us with some apprehension (hee hee). They did great and learned how to operate the Segway without difficulty. They later said they were so glad because there was no way they could have walked all throughout the walled city. Once done they went off on their own and we ventured to the castle. It was quite a steep hike up that hill but we made it (whew!). We rented the audio tour and got bored about half way through. I believe I overbooked ourselves with excursions. It was nice to say we were there when it showed up on Amazing Race (lol).

On New Year's day, traffic was heavy and my Cartagena tour to the old town and museum had to be aborted in order to get back to the ship on time.

The port was clean. The city is run down and somewhat unnerving as a tourist. This port is next to neighboring Venezuela in extreme poverty. I would choose a different country as a whole for a stop in the Caribbean.
