An ugly ship???

This came up in conversation the other week at work on the bus back to the port. We were talking about driving up to the port (there is an exit ramp and we can see the ship when we get off). One girl said she gets excited when she sees one ship (I will leave the brand off to not sway people's opinion) because its so pretty and things the other cruise ship is ugly.. I immediately told her to take it back because I didn't think it was fair.. I personally don't find either ship "ugly" or "depressing"

Question to the story is do you guys think there is ever any ugly ships? Most brands have the same style... What are your opinions? I think if its a cruise ship, i'll be excited to get on it.

OK to be fair, here is a better photo of the Epic

As far as I know, I am not related to Veronica Guerin the Irish journalist whose investigations into Dublin's drug trade led to her murder at age 37.

I am, however, related to Richie Guerin past player & coach of the New York Knick's & St. Louis Atlantic Hawks. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. You can read more about him at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richie_Guerin. He often gave us free tickets to the New York Knicks games. Happy

I would have to vote that the Epic is one ugly ship. I'm sure the inside is nice..... but the exterior is YUCK. Yes, I would book a cruise on her if the price point was very good, but she is still not pleasing to the eye.

Im assuming this thread is about appearances, from a vessels profile standpoint. Not about amenities, types of entertainment, quality of cuisine, itineraries and levels of service offered on board the ship. To me that is a different subject entirely, another thread another time. But, if not so, then I would have to point out we are entirely satisfied our three cruises, of 6 weeks plus, on the Royal and Regal Princess ships, however, I am not enamored at all with outward appearance of those two.

I

m still of the mind that the two largest Disney ships are about the most attractive afloat, that is not to say though I want to go to Disney Land. Like Berlitz says about those ships: “Disney ships are a tribute to the grand ocean liners of the 1930s, like all its ships there are two large funnels and the bows have handsome gold scroll work more typically seen adorning yesteryears tall ships. (The ships were built from the keel up to emulate the great liners of the past, their unique funnels were the first out of the ship yards since the early 1950s.)” Can’t say though I agree with Dumbo on the stern, cute though, for the kids.

It is hard to find a ship historian that doesnt agree that the Normandie was the classiest of the North Pacific Liners. (She accidentally caught fire in New York while being converted to a troop ship during War ll and sank. Sad.)

Yikes.

I'm not liking that profile either.

Any relation to Veronica Guerin ?

I do not think that any ship is ugly but I do not especially like the lines of The Epic. Would that bother me if I found a good deal for a cruise on The Epic? No and I wouldn't call the ship ugly, either. I went to see her on her first visit to her new home port in Port Canaveral. I spent hours waiting for her late departure. This is the photo that I snapped. I will post better photos later. Now I am off to see the Oasis at her new home port in Port Canaveral.

Another thought... perhaps the beauty of a ship is also associated with the experience of being on her? One of us wrote that some people find the new ships (mega-bricks) to be attractive but doubted that they were cruising years ago. I agree with that. Also, my thought is that whether it is marketing hype or actual hands-on experience, if it was a great experience then the person's opinion is shaded by that emotional reaction in addition to the ship's profile, etc.

Well, if all goes well, Lord willing and the Creek dont rise, we will be boarding the identical sister to this ship in eight days. This is the original R-4, we will be on the original R-3, now Pacific Princess. Our cabin is on deck eight, port side, immediately adjacent to the furthest aft round port hole on the bridge deck. Small ship, not the smallest we have ever been on but close to it. I’ll report back in a review but from here I love the looks of her on the water.
